The Toyota Corolla is one of the best-known cars in the world. It is synonymous with no-nonsense dependability, but these days it is actually quite fun to drive.
The hatchback is stylish and there is a larger sedan as well. Both petrol and hybrid engine options are available in Australia, and in today’s episode, Johnny reviews the 2022 Toyota Corolla Ascent Sport hybrid hatch at the entry-level side of the lineup.

But do you get a proper luxury experience from the cheapest 2022 Audi Q5 - the $70K 40 TDI base model? In today’s episode of Chasing Cars, Tom examines a lightly-optioned Q5 40 TDI to find out.

Got the hatchback big brother the touring sports in the UK with the 1.8 engine last month very impressive fuel efficient 55 mpg in cold weather drive train very smooth feels very premium compared to the Ford and vauxhall I've had in the past I just wish it would run in ev mode above 20 mph and the engine is a bit keen to kick in when there is plenty of charge in the battery but this may be due to the cold weather

I have a 2 yeah old corolla hybrid hatch which I’ve had for 7 months now i hate the boot it so small and the tyres are great the Bridgestone still oem fitted tyres still in the wet they are good I keep my psi up to 38 cold because I do about 700klms a week for work.. road noise is ok comes with a crap space saver in a hybrid I managed to swap mine out for a full size spare which fits in the boot. Fuel is ok on the highway engine kicks in alot because of the many flat surfaces are not quiet flat which the hybrid system doesn’t kick in but around town it does about 4.3l per 100 I don’t use cruise control because the hybrid doesn’t kick in much compared to using my foot instead Keep in mind with capped price servicing if u don’t buy brand new or a demo you don’t get the 5x first services up to 60k at the $205 for each service I just had my 30k done and it cost me just over $400 thru Toyota because my car was a ex rental with low klms but I know what each service cost Overtaking can be a pain in the rear I can plant my foot with power button on gets me around the person and yes the revs sits about 4rpm on a uphill Yes I will be buying another one next year hybrid is the way to go there are a couple of things that annoy me but it’s a overall great car with the Toyota name for reliability and resale value while fuel prices are at $1.87l it so cheap to run

People who love Toyotas should have a closer look at this Corolla as it is so far behind the pack in many ways. Back seat space and amenity is hopeless, very small boot, slow, handling and stability not good at highway speeds, hard plastics and plastic steering wheel. Someone I know bought one of these a couple of years ago and was astounded how wayward it was on a country main road in blustery, windy conditions compared to a Mk 6 Golf he had come from. Safety assist systems are not up to scratch. This car belongs in the last century.

I was tossing up between the Corolla Ascent Sport Hybrid and the Yaris ZR Hybrid, and went the Yaris (or my partner did, at least). Smaller car with (what feels like) just as much room inside, and she can play pretend that it's a GR... Feel the same about the tyres - they love to squeal whenever you're taking off with even a smidge of steering lock on! Edit: and again, love the soccer balls. You should keep a running total of the scoreboard somewhere.

Great review. Although I think resale values also need to considered when doing the calculations for hybrid versus petrol. Presumably the hybrid will be worth more when selling, so the 'additional cost' of the hybrid may be much lower that it at first appears.

I have developed a standard question I ask myself of any car I look to buy - are the instruments and controls as easy to find in the dark, as they are in daylight? Many cars now fall down on this. First time I tried my spouse’s new compact Clio Tce90, it was late evening…I had to put the interior lights on full, to find anything, wipers, lights, it was nuts. So, my standard question, and it’s almost never addressed by reviewers, night driving - maybe this is why auto makers save money on these things? I dunno, it’s just I was used to Passats and Volvos, and they had lit controls. Take care all, thanks for the review.

Nice review, enjoy the fact that you're framing this as exactly what it is, an economical runabout with some electrification as a kicker. Although I'd like to know how the insurance premium was derived, you do say that it's the average and I understand that this is powered by budget direct but it would be nice to see either the range or some examples.

@@MrBenHaynes the point is that the Corolla as it is now is relegated to 2nd car status for the work commute or the odd grocery run. At best, it’s a couple’s car. @@MrBenHaynes I had actually thought so too, but you can only get a Yaris as a hybrid at the top trim, which is $35k da. As for the Yaris Cross, you could get a base hybrid but that’s around $32k da. Both of which are more expensive than the $31k for this Corolla.

They've come a step forward from being a "fridge on wheels" but it's good to see Toyota not trying to force this car into something it's not. People don't buy these for top of the range interior materials or driving dynamics - they buy them because they are reliable, incredible on fuel and relatively cheap. The only thing that pulls the hatch down is that tiny boot. You have to see it in person to see how ridiculously small it is. Small price to pay for a hybrid I guess? (or just get the sedan).
