I’ve had 3 GRY’s - I took one to Litchfield and spent £3k on Nitrons and lowered 20mm.The best day with it was when I had it put back to stock - it felt soo good. Toyota know what they’re doing. Reality is that people are just addicted to modifying cars, sometimes it’s a retrograde step

Agreed on the Litchfield Nitrons. The problem I think is not the dampers which are excellent. The problem is the spring rates. For the road its just too hard. The dampers do their best but the fact is the springs are way too hard and on certain bumps, it gets too crashy. I went back to stock and gosh it felt so good.

Yeah on mine I've kept it stock. When it's no longer a daily I'll go absolutely ballistic (sequential, turbo, cams etc), I think there's no middle ground. It's just so good stock and that's the beauty of it. When I bought it, it came with a larger exhaust, you only want it on for a week then you get sick of it... Now, you compared to say the mkv supra which just comes alive when you do ecu/downpipe/intake etc.Very happy with the modded Supra and stock GRY.

You should have gone for a stock GR Yaris. I’ve owned mine for two years now (bought it brand new), and while I’ve been tempted to modify it, I haven’t touched a thing. Why? Because Toyota nailed it right from the factory. Too often, I’ve seen these cars ruined with ill-conceived modifications that compromise their essence. The GR Yaris is a rally car at heart, and that’s how it should stay. The ride height is intentional, and the higher seating position complements its design-I personally prefer it that way. As for exhaust mods, they just make the car louder without improving the sound. The stock exhaust may not be perfect, but aftermarket options often amplify the droney, boomy tones, making it downright obnoxious. If you wanted something even more focused, the GRMN variant is probably the way to go-it’s dialed in straight from the factory and needs nothing. That said, I’m more than happy with my stock GR Yaris. It’s a fantastic daily driver with plenty of performance to stand out in today’s market. It’s true, the GR Yaris will never fully capture what the old Evos and STIs represented. Those cars belonged to a different era-raw, surgical, and intensely focused. But their big downside was how impractical they were for daily use. They felt like they were falling apart at high speeds and were exhausting to drive over time. The GR Yaris, on the other hand, strikes a perfect balance: practical enough for daily driving yet thrilling enough to remind you of its rally DNA. Toyota really got it right with this one.

Mine is stock and I’m not shy of tastefully modifying cars. I think it works so well on the road as is. Doesn’t need to be any faster to enjoy it. Dampers need to move to do their job properly. I don’t actually think it’s a track car, it’s more at home on the roads. I can’t help thinking from your comments that a standard car would suit you and your daughters needs better. Very interesting to hear your thoughts on a reasonably heavy modded GRY, especially a Lichfield one. Car modification is all about individual preference which is the beauty of being able to set the car up to suit the individuals tastes. I’ve had mine for about 8 months now and have undertaken some mods - eventuri intake, HJS downpipe, resonated opf delete and resonated milltek exhaust. This has given the car a much more responsive feel and due to the resonated system it doesn’t drone. It is only loud under hard acceleration. I will not do anything to the suspension for the reason you spoke about. It’s set up perfectly from stock for bumpy B roads imo. I did fit spring theory spacers which improved the look and stance without messing with the springs or dampers. Never understood the negativity on the seats or seating position - it’s a rally homologation car not a circuit car. The car is about fun and carrying speed quickly on twisty roads. If you are chasing huge bhp numbers and 0-60 times, buy another car !

I have a Subaru P1 that’s done just over 16,400 miles that I’ve just upgraded the suspension to the Bilstein Prodrive WR set up that Prodrive always wanted to fit on these back in the day. The car also has a quick steering rack and high caster control arms. Handling and turn in are pin sharp and the suspension copes so well with broken B road tarmac and doesn’t fight with the road. I test drove a GR Yaris and find that the older Evos and Imprezas are a much better driving experience than the GR Yaris. It’s also nice that you don’t have to worry about what setting you’re in or have to worry about lane assist, stop start or getting confused with load of buttons on the steering wheel! Just get in, turn the key and enjoy! With the GR Yaris seats, from my test drive I’d stick with the standard mounts and not look to lower. I’m around 6ft 1 and found that if I was to go any lower then I’d struggle to get a good view of the road as the dash board is quite high and can block your view. Just something for you to consider with the seats.

I’ve modded cars in the past and whether standard or modded you have to compromise even with the mod there are things that are mad ‘worse’. Then there’s the take it all off or have original parts for resale, tells you all you need to know about modifying IMO.

I’ve only had my standard (apart from a Whifbitz exhaust) Circuit Rack GRY for a couple of weeks and less than 300 miles. I was surprised how compliant and un-crashy the suspension is. I’m perfectly happy with the ride. I’m not sure about the exhaust noise, but that’s the only thing I don’t particularly like apart from having to turn off the annoying engine auto stop/start. If you want to have a car for serious tracking then there are big compromises, which is why production road cars don’t handle like racing cars. 😉

I bought a set of Eibach progressive rate, adjustable springs from String Theory garage and lowered the car by just 10mm (Which is how much they lowered the GRMN model available only in Japan). I did it mostly because the car looked too high but I didn't want to radically alter the car's character and I reckon Toyota got the dampers spot on. The Eibachs are designed to work in conjunction with the OEM dampers and are 10% firmer at the front and 20% firmer at the rear. I absolutely love them and the faster you go and the worse the road gets, the better they feel. Just wish they fitted the Gen 2 (which I just recently bought ) but Toyota altered the front strut design so they no longer fit. Bugger. Good luck with your build in the future. Cheers.

With the GR Yaris it all depends what you want to use it for. If you want something track focused there are some mods which will help - i.e. cooling for diffs. There are way better cars for more track focused fun. But out of the box as a standard car the GR Yaris is perfect for me. Like you I use mine for picking up child from kindergarten and having fun on b-roads. I think it's hard to compare or want to make it like a 90s Evo/Subaru as cars have changed and so have rally, safety and emissions regs considerably over that period of time. But for a new car with a Toyota warranty they are awesome. For mud flaps I would recommend MFF ones from Japan (Tegiwa stock them in UK) with no drilling needed unlike with other brands.

It’s a personal taste thing and the environment you intend to run the car. I have the Litchfield Nitrons and absolutely love them. With the dampers in the firmer setting it’s very stiff. Ideal for track days and when I back them off I find the ride is better than stock. I also run DNA Racing top mounts that allow me to run way more caster. I found this really helped the car turn in and provided more feel through the steering. I find the stock seats way too high. I have to recline them if wearing a helmet on track. Toyota themselves lowered the seats in the mk2. Finally, exhaust is a tough one. Stock was too quiet and most aftermarket ones are too boomy. I’ve found the 3 banger needs a resonance chamber to make them sound better. It will never be as good as a four cylinder but the resonance chamber really helps. I’d have a play around with the dampers before you write them off. Interestingly, Nitron developed their own spec dampers for the car with a coilover rear and slightly different valving. It’s your car. Do whatever makes you happy.

I kept mine standard from new and resisted the temptation to modify. Sold it 2 weeks ago and miss it so much. Smooth gearbox and strong clutch, comfortable drive and very responsive once you wind it up. Huge grip levels especially in the wet. Too many of these cars weren't run in properly especially when it comes to the transmission. I ran mine in for 621 miles and couldnt complain about anything when warmed up and pushed. I used AP carbon fibre front mudflpas, nice and sutble and did the job perfectly.

I honestly think that too much Yaris driver are wrongly advised by vloggers driving these cars on a circuit. It’s a rally homologation car for God’s sake. Why changing and lowering it to a circuit car? I enjoy driving this car on B-roads and this in all types of weather. Than this little car is an extremely sharp weapon. Mine is standard with exception of an EEC approved Milltek exhaust, eVentury Carbon Airbox and an improved cooling system by Forged. That’s everything. I don’t have any problem with the seating height, I don’t have any problem with its power (which is sufficient enough for its tended use). So I agree with the author in concluding that the standard car with it’s fantastic Michelin Pilot Sports doesn’t need improvements. That’s also the reason why I would never trade it in for the 2nd generation. It has that lovely badge under the gear which reminds you what kind of car it is, which the 2nd generation doesn’t have. Of course the 2nd generation will be better, but taken into consideration the price they ask for that car, the 1st generation is a real bargain and one of my favourite cars. If you like to drive on a circuit, there are a lot of alternatives (Lotus, Alpine, Porsche, …) in all kind of price levels. Nice review with honest opinion of the author

If nothing else it would make good content to see if all your changes were for the better or not, I’m sure your viewers would not be slow in confirming their thoughts, positive or negative 🤔🏁

To me that’s too over modded. I’ve got a bog standard one with an eventuri; nothing else, and it’s brilliant

Not sure of the type of ECU tuning you have but if its a tuning box just dump it. These modern ECUs are so sophisticated that a tuning box just won't work. The ECU sort of knows its been fooled by the the tuning box and just scales everything back. And then the engine won't be as revvy as before and even the boost feels a bit meh. Switching back to stock just made everything feel better again. You'd have to spend quite a bit of cash on something like a Motec or ECUtek to get real permanent gains.

Tbf these car manufacturers spend millions on development and we think we can make them better ? A decent set of dampers more fast road focused and a rear arb is all that car needs I am guessing with a decent fast rd geo. I own a last of the line Jdm 2013 sti hatch rev (e )with Cusco dampers adjustable in car electronically and rear diff and a few braces stock power I can terrorise GT4’s at Cadwell you don’t need massive power and all these pushed upon us mods “we must do” my car is standard engine wise I love being a quiet underdog Toyota are not silly they built a good car that’s easily ruined. I sold as S202 years ago the guy modded it and I drove it that car was horrendous some things are best left alone for purpose 👍🏻

You didnt choose the mods so no surprise some aren't to your taste, pick what you want and sell what you dont. Some will be happy stock,i wasn't and wouldn't own one stock, done thousands of miles in both stock and modified.

Look!let's be Honest! Who's kidding themselves thinking they can do a better job than GR racing, ive got one and have modified it minimally, just lower springs and spacers cos it did have abit of unnecessary roll,Rides way better.although IT IS A RALLYCAR.

IMO buying a modded one wasnt the right choice for you; youre just not the type who mods cars apparently. I agree with the exhaust though and it sounds like a right cowboy has been at the suspension settings. Regarding the power - people are absolutely obsessed with the peak figures these cars can manage but those that know better will say "the area under the curve" is what matters more - for driving you want a flatter torque curve and more linear delivery. When youre asking a 3 pot engine to hit the same peak power that 4/5/6 cylinders can manage you'll always be leaving something on the table - more turbo lag and later spool is inevitable. That being said you could bring it to someone to do some fueling/ignition timing trickery to "fill in" a bit and make it produce power more progressively.

Your idea of raising the car to make it more compliant won’t work unfortunately as yours simply raising the position of the same spring with the same spring rate. Softer springs is the way to go.

Great concept, and I'm glad Toyota made it BUT I just didn't get it when driving. Less than the sum of its parts, I would say. Chief issue is no feedback from the chassis. I can't tell what the GRY is doing. Yes, I could push on, but how big an accident could you have when you suddenly discover its limits without warning? It's not a fun car, it's bigger than you think, it doesn't sound great and visibility is poor. Steering, suspension, and gearchange are all average. Nothing stands out. Just my tuppence. Sell it and move on to something more fun.

Suspension steering average? 😂. You having a laugh. Most precise steering, point the wheel where you wanna go and car takes you there. You're wrong on this. Big time wrong.
@bispal8 күн бұрын
@ I didn't get much, if any, feedback from the EPS. That seems to to echoed by other owners in on line forums. I've read the new car is much improved, which shows there was headroom for improvement. A lot depends on your frame of reference and I'm sure ours will differ as you believe its the 'most precise steering' Reply

There are no professional rally cars that are manual transmission. These mods on the automatic transmission Yaris would be better for track days and daily driving in bumper to bumper traffic. Get rid of this slow manual and follow in Volkswagens process of dropping the manual for the GTI and R. Logic over emotion on this silliness of thinking of the engagement of driving. In that logic you should remove your power windows for manul cranks for the "engagement" witch doesn't win races.

@ Yeah you mentioned you've had many types of high end suspension... Nitron, Ohlins, etc. Me too. Multiple circuit clubsport type builds using Nitron R3's, Ohlins, JRZ, etc. And judging from your selection of cars and your description of how you use it, you can think about a proper tarmac rally suspension from Reiger. They are long stroke suspension with really trick valving to somehow keep the car flat through corners. You can also youtube "Rally2 Yaris" and watch those Rally2 GRY's on tarmac... it's amazing how you can see how long the stroke is yet the car is so flat through corners and so nimble. You can also google "Corner Nz" which has a really nice blog/writeups on modding the Yaris. It's Czech so you'll need to use Google Translate. Search for their KZbin channel as well and watch their awesome driving on the mountains!
