Great video Timmy. I have the rear disc brake setup and struggled with it. I got it done by using a 10mm or 8mm 1/4 socket on an extension to compress the clip and spring, pushing it through the sight hole on the axle hub flange Your method looked a lot better way to go. I never thought an axle would bend independent of the diff housing but there you go.

I'm in the process of developing a tool that will help with the reassembly of the parking brake. It's a tool that will allow you to compress the brake shoe hold-down spring while you rotate the brake shoe into position over the spring hold-down pin. I gave my design idea to Duane, who makes the axle tools, and he's going to send me a prototype soon so I can test it out. I did find for sale a tool that helps with the disassembly of the hold-down spring. It will fit through the axle hole so you can compress and twist the spring retaining plate to release it from the pin. So, pretty soon, I'm going to make a video showcasing these two tools that will make servicing the parking brake much easier.

Thanks for the how to video.......replaced mine in 10 years ago. Putting back the parking brake took me 4 hours because there was just so little clearance for my fat fingers to hold the retaining pins while assembling. People with smaller hands will have a much easier experience. Plus my hands acquired so many scratches through the process. It was the hardest part of the job. Unfortunately, I didn't have an assistant but definitely will the next time. The slide hammer puller is on my buy list, that was so simple. I learned a lot from this detailed video.

Dude, you are not kidding on how annoying that parking brake design is. We show the struggle in Part 2. I almost want to design a SST to effectively compress the spring so you don't have to get your fingers in there.
@TheDesertRat31
@TheDesertRat31 9 ай бұрын
Is that the spring that you have to access through the hole in the rear hub (the one people pre assemble and compress with zip ties)? I learned how crappy that is by accident. I recently found the special tool designed to fit through that hole and push the spring and cap and allow you to turn it 90° and retain the end of the pin.
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 9 ай бұрын
@@TheDesertRat31 Yeah, it's those shoe hold-down springs that are the pain in the ass. I want to have a tool that you can use through the access hole, hook behind the spring assembly and then pull towards you compressing the spring while you rotate the shoe into position. This way your fingers don't need to be in there trying to compress the spring.

Hey Tim great video as usual. Quick question, have you ever heard of anyone having any luck welding/re-drilling hub lug holes? I've never tried to alter axles on these rigs. I guess if you heat up the axle too hot it could warp. Sort of sounds like a risk not worth taking just to keep your rims.

An easier way to get the brake line free is by cutting a slit on the bracket, on the top. You just hit it with a file after and the little two pronged tab will still go on. You won’t have to bleed the brakes. Super simple. Way less time than having to unbolt the caliper, then the bracket, then opening the brake system to air, then bleeding, then bolting the bracket then the caliper. 20:55

So if I found alot of grease/oil in my brake drums means the sealing is probably damaged? I had for like two years a selfmade rear differential lock that replaced the toyota actuator but I missed some thing, a breather. Probably thats why it was pressing oil through the sealing? Greetings from Germany
@TimmyTheToolman
@TimmyTheToolman 2 ай бұрын
Yeah, if you have gear oil on your brakes, that's definitely a sign that the seals have failed. A stuck closed breather could cause the seals to fail, but seals fail for other reasons, like time/mileage and wheel bearing play.

@@TimmyTheToolman well I changed like a week ago back to oem part I found for a reasonable price in Saudi Arabia so I guess I will check in one or two weeks if the drum is greasy again.. But yeah mileage is also a thing probably with like 333.000kms Thanks for advice :)

I might want to get the press tools. Who makes them? On my iPhone I don’t see that info because the description doesn’t show. I found a way to get around some of the struggle with the retainer springs. I pre-compress them in the jaws of a small Crescent wrench. Then I secure them, in their compressed state while still in the jaws, with some fine iron wire. Florist’s green wrapping wire works really well. I use the kind that is coated in green lacquer, not the kind that has a plastic insulation sheath. Then, I put the slotted washer, spring, and washer with the retaining tab on the little rod, and keep them in place with roast-tying twine passed through the hole in the flange. The twine enables me to keep the spring assembly together while I slide the shoe in place. I’ve sometimes tied a heavy object to the free ends of the twine to provide tension while keeping my hands free. Once the shoe and spring assembly are in place, and while maintaining tension on the twine, I cut or break the wires with dikes or needle-nose pliers. The wire is fine and fairly soft, so it comes apart and with a bit of patience the pieces come free of the spring/washer assembly. The shoe and retainer are now in place. This method still requires a fair amount of patience. But it eliminates most of the strain and aggravation, along with bruises and scraped knuckles.

We link the axle tools in the video description. You just have to click on "more" to expand the description out. We have heard of the wire technique. We started to go that route with some bailing wire, but abandoned it after some frustration. We just shot a video regarding the parking brake on these Toyota/Lexus trucks and SUVs with rear disk brakes. I think we've come up with a pretty good way to do it with a new special service tool we discovered. It was still a bit of a pain in the ass, but we found this new technique a little easier.
