We finally get the timing system installed, and attempt to bleed the cooling system. Again. But predictably things go a bit wrong

A few comments have pointed out it may just be condensation rather than a failed head gasket. Originally we’d ruled that out due to how milky the oil was, but then we remembered Misty did spend a couple of months over the winter outside with the cam cover off, so it could well be really bad condensation 😅 we’re now going to do a cooling system pressure test before we go as far as removing the head - although we are already half way through getting the engine out 😖

I've followed your videos and have had the exact same issue with the temp sensor. Turns out I may have cut the wrong wires with the oil level sensor (or we both did 😅) there was a red and a black and white one. I've joined them back up and my temp sensor is working a treat. Just thought you may want to check

Glad to see you guys back! I recently discovered and binge watched all your videos of your journey so far with Misty. I'm currently doing some work on my own MR2 which is acquired last year, and your videos have been some great inspiration. Look forward to seeing some more videos soon, despite the bad news on the car. I would certainly advise doing some more investigations on the cause of the water and oil mixing before removing the engine and replacing the head gasket. Head gaskets don't tend to fail while cars are parked up, although on this engine I don't think there's really many other places the two can mix as it doesn't have an oil cooler, and the two can't mix through any other gaskets. So while it's likely to be the head gasket, it's always nice to be sure. Working on cars can be very trying that's for sure. Best of luck!

Yeah, we’re gonna do a cooling system pressure test to be sure. There is an oil cooler, but as that would be high pressure oil, so would probably also put oil in the coolant

@@EnginesandUnfinishedBusiness my bad, there is an oil cooler, I was thinking of something else! Hopefully it ends up being something like that. Look forward to the next video.

Yes the coolant system pressure testers are great, I needed one for my car because it would only leak when driving and I had no idea where from. Sadly, I didn't catch it fast enough and it needed a new headgasket (from overheating). But the initial leak was just a damn loose hose (nnd upon tightening, another, slightly less loose hose.).

Don't condemn the head gasket that fast. Misty has not run in a very long time and you live where its very humid, so start by doing an oil change and pressure testing the cooling system. My guess is that milkiness is just condensation from sitting.
@EnginesandUnfinishedBusiness
@EnginesandUnfinishedBusiness Жыл бұрын
A few comments have pointed that out, and we forgot that misty sat outside for a couple of winter months with the cam cover off, so it could well be condensation. We’re now gonna do a cooling system pressure test before taking the head off to be sure 😄

If the car has sat around for a long time this may be a reason for the milky oil not necessarily head gasket.
@EnginesandUnfinishedBusiness
@EnginesandUnfinishedBusiness Жыл бұрын
We didn’t get it on video but before the oil leak started we spent quite a while trying and failing to bleed the cooling system. During which the engine got quite hot a few times. She had been sitting for about a year, although the oil was fresh before that, and she was in (mostly) dry storage, I wouldn’t expect that much moisture in the oil just from sitting around but it’s possible. We’ll find out once we get the head off 😅
@EnginesandUnfinishedBusiness
@EnginesandUnfinishedBusiness Жыл бұрын
Your comment made me remember Misty did spend a couple of winter months outside with the cam cover off, so maybe it is just condensation and the head gasket diagnosis was premature 🤔 Were now gonna do a cooling system pressure test before taking the head off, so thanks for the comment, it may well save us a lot of time and effort 😄
@LowAss720

@@EnginesandUnfinishedBusiness If I remember correctly these cars are pretty hard to bleed the coolant system. Would defiantly recommend a pressure test. Glad to se a video from you guys and cant wait to see this thing back on the road!

Agree with this statement above. Do some more testing before you consider removing the engine to do the headgasket - it might be due to condensation in there from it sitting so long. Great to see a video again from you!

What exactly do you mean when you say "a new more modern engine". Which engine?
@thangcacdi
@thangcacdi Жыл бұрын
@@Milkmans_Son he’s got a 3sge, the engine was first produced in the early 80’s, there’re are Toyota engines you can swap in with relative ease. 2ARfe, 2GRfe,even Honda options. These engines are more reliable. Do the work once and you should have a reliable engine that’ll let and they’ll be able to actually drive and enjoy the car.
