Toyota MR2 Project - Part 49 - New Radiator & Coolant Fill

In this video we replace the rusty old radiator with a shiny new Mishimoto one, as well as replacing the fan. Then we try (and fail) to fill and bleed the coolant.

Great video! Turn blower heater and fan on max, rear end up and massage the living daylights out of every single coolant pipe you can get to while engine is running. If your thermostat is leaking then yeah- drain the whole thing, fix it and start again. But I’d want to make sure I’d gotten rid of the air lock first and confirmed it worked first before draining to fix a leak.

I winced when you put the wrong connectors on because I have done that more times than I would like to admit. I hope the leak isn't anything major. From what I have heard, getting the air out of the cooling system can be a pain. It is lovely to see a video of you making progress!

so glad your one step ahead of me, only difference overall is the extensive welding i have had to do which also means painting the whole car....outside... damn, btw found the links for the fuel lines & lost a olive...waiting on a new one.

oh yeah trying to do that fuel line with the engine in, is a beatch! the heat shields do come off without too much bother.

ahhhh coolant bleeding, the bane of all MR2 owners or so ive heard. you might have to bite the bullet and get a vacuum bleeder

I've had thermostats that were dead on arrival. Learned the hard way to boil them in a pot and verify they open before installing. Also on my Civic hatch the front wheels spin some in neutral when on the jacks.

Thinking back to what I've seen; defective thermostats, warped housings for same and then there are passages clogged with something or other and hoses that are coming apart on the inside and thereby clogged. Since yours appear to be all new, at least we can rule that last one out.

Some will fail closed when the heat gets too high. Which I think is just stupid. Especially if you go to refill the coolant and it gets a little hot in the process. Mine failed closed, but it gave me an excuse to get a higher opening temperature thermostat for the winter.

Put the cap on so that the system will pressurize properly.

Man some engines just donot like to be refilled. Normally I have to disconnect several hoses and reconnect them in stages during filling to prevent air pockets. The tiny fan without a cowl is likely also not helping. But a leak in the wrong place can suck air and prevent coolant flowing. Which is really annoying, because you would think a pressurized system would push the air out.

wouldnt worry about the axles moving mate ,my two do it without wheels on once on a hoist started up.

Yeah, they often spin when there is absolutely no resistance. Yet I am still surprised when it happens sometimes lol.

@@Oblithian it's nothing more than oil drag. The viscosity of the oil swirls against the gears and revolves the output shaft. If you grip the driveshaft you can stop it instantly.

Did you connect a hose to the radiator bleeder (top right side) and a hose to the hvac (its top center in the fronk)? You have to bleed at all 3 points in order to get all air bubbles out. Also turn your heater on to full blast. Theres a video on youtube on how to bleed the system, it was a guy with a blue mr2. Hope this helps! (I definitely have done it more times than i've wanted to)

Hi mate! Just discovered your channel as yesterday I've replaced my sw20 radiator and I wasn't shure if my bleeding process was OK. I don't have a thermostat so I guess it was easier to fill everything. Did you try with the thermostat bleed? Did you see any bubbles? I really like your content! Cheers from Barcelona, Spain!

Sadly not, we recently tried again having sorted the leak and it still wouldn’t bleed properly. Might try a vacuum bleeder next time

@EnginesandUnfinishedBusiness so glad for your reply. The garage I ended up taking it too tried a vacuum bleeder and it didn't work. They replaced the temp sensor and still no joy 😵‍💫. Have to hope one of us sort it so we can help the other

just thinking, you already done waterpump kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3PChIZ3hLh1nrs, is it maybe those o'rings on pipes or a gasket issue? thermo itself is easy to test, just boiling kettle water & watch , it'll open if its working.
