The CX-5 was the one I went with after test driving many compact suvs. The Mazda was head and shoulders above the rest for the same price. It drives and handles SO well for an suv. The interior was the best as well. Car and driver rated the Mazda CX-5 as safer and more reliable than the crv or the rav4.

That’s awesome, how many miles do you have on that thing? Is that zero major issues, but still some of the smaller typical complications everyone can expect here & there with regular usage - like after all these years what were the biggest/most unforeseen ones, if any?

@@phatlobes258 Just passed 82,000 last week! No issues minor or major since we purchased back in August 2012. We've just kept up with regular maintenance and I changed out the tires to Michelin Premier LTX's (smoother ride than the factory Toyo's)back at 50,000 miles. That's it literally, Not a squeak or rattle through almost 90,000 miles. It's out third Mazda (previously had two CX-7's) and all been extremely reliable and engaging to drive. We're looking to upgrade (want more power, space and modern safety features. I also need more cargo space than the CX-9 offers so unfortunately Mazda doesn't offer anything that will work. If they had a model with the space and a decent V6 like in the Kia Telluride I'd buy it in a heartbeat. I think Mazda are gone much more "premium" nowadays and so less boxy in design and thus less passenger and cargo space is available. I guess it's hard to be luxurious feeling and sleek looking and also be utilitarian at the same time. The crazy popular Kia Telluride I think is about the best blend of style and function in the mainstream brands but having test driven it, it's no Mazda behind the wheel.

@@MIZUNOMP60 That's really comforting to know, I'm getting a 2014 model but am looking to possibly resell it in the near future, hopefully before the used car market going-rate drops back down. I didn't know about the Kia Telluride at all, I might actually genuinely consider that, seems like the exact thing I was looking for haha I appreciate you sharing that!

Many people test drive many vehicle's before buying. I test drove many compact SUVs and found CX5 too small interior & cargo areas (important for most buyers), very uncomfortable seats (far too firm) along with less comfortable suspension for daily driving over RAV4. Gas Rav4 is loud and fairly slow, hybrid model addresses both those issues. Not to mentions gets far better fuel economy @ 40 mpg. RAV4 also more than ground clearance for mild off-roading, curbs and winter snow. Almost bought Volvo XC40 but couldn't justify cost of ownership over RAV4. XC40 an amazing design inside and out compared to both of these, and crazy comfortable seats!

Looked at both with the top trims and even the RAV4 Hybrid ... Took a long test in each car and for me it's the Mazda CX5. To me it's just a better car all round. It has exceptional road handling and smoothness with superb comfort, then there's that beautiful smooth 2.5 Turbo engine and when I did the numbers for what I would use in fuel each year its only nominal even against the hybrid, AND I don't need to worry about range and whether if I have to charge before I can go any farther. Best of all it feels and drives and even looks like a far more premium car than a mainstream one which makes you think you paid a lot more for it. I then actually went out and bought one.

That made no sense. All of the RAV hybrids have an ICE. The only one that can be plugged in is the PRIME and that will charge it's battery with the ICE while driving like the non plug in hybrid version. The PRIME and hybrid packages are superior to the base ICE only model RAVS theses YT reviewers are comparing the CX5 to. Base RAVS cost more and Mazda has done a great job competing in the segment right below that price point. But for someone looking at a top end CX5 they'd already be in the know and looking at the electric assisted RAV models and probably going with one of them knowing Toyotas history with hybrid technology.

The interior of the CX-5 is nicer with more comfortable seats. One of my favorite features is the heads up display. It sounds gimmicky, but it displays everything you need to see. Your speed, the speed limit, radar cruiser control distance, etc. Very cool. Finally, the handling and acceleration just makes it so fun to drive. Everybody in love with that cx 5... here is an actual long term user consumer report on the the 2017 cx 5 gs 2.5l. We got 18,000mi/30,000km when the oil pump failed on us. It ejected 4 quarts of oil somewhere within 5 km after developing a lifter tick. Added 4 quarts of fresh oil and made it another 40km when the tick came back and it shut off. Got it fired up after waiting 20 mins and it now developed a lower end knock. Checked the oil and it was still full. Got it towed to the dealership after waiting an hour with my 3 year old son on the side of a snowy highway in well below freezing temperatures. They told me it wasn't covered by warranty because I could not find my receipts for my oil changes. Lost $30k on that mazda... we used it to defer the rest of our loan and got into a 2018 4runner. Mazda also charged us more for the Toyota to pay for the engine replacement. I will never deal with mazda again in my life, that company can burn in hell.

For anybody who is wondering my experience with the 2022 RAV4 and the 2022 CX-5 is as follows: I ended up getting a 22 rav4 hybrid limited, took it for a test ride and all that stuff and took it home but on the way home when the speed limit goes from 60 to 75 mph that's where I noticed that the RAV4 is obnoxiously loud. Ended up trading it in for the CX-5 two weeks later as the Toyota dealership said the noise was normal. The cx5 is super quiet and fun to drive. Yeah it's not a hybrid but at least I don't have to replace the battery if I keep it long term. I also felt like the seats in the CX-5 are more comfortable than the RAV4 as well as legroom in the driver seat versus the RAV4. CX5 for the win for me.

I am fortunate to have both. A 2017 CX5 Grand Touring with dual power seats, head up display etc. The RAV4 is a 2020 XSE Hybrid. The Mazda was the top trim level at the time. Great CUV with minor complaints. Engine noise is somewhat loud, the brakes don’t instill confidence. The interior, like you said, has a premium feel to it. The Toyota gets great gas mileage. 42 MPG has been my best to date. The XSE has all painted trim, wheel arches, lower cladding, where as on the other models, the trim is plastic. Very cheap looking. The drawbacks on the RAV4 are no memory seat function, no power passenger seat, and a camera feature on the rear view mirror that I will probably never use. You have to move up to the Limited to get the first two features. The interior is very industrial looking. No feeling of luxury here. In closing, I’d give the Mazda an “A” and the RAV4 a “B”. I am looking forward to the redesign of the CX5 for 2022. Thanks for a great comparison video.

Great and timely review. Although we don’t get the CX5 2.5 gas turbo here in this country, (am currently based in the Philippines) all the other trims including the 2.2L diesel turbo are available. I’m thinking of replacing my 2014 CX5 2.0 with another CUV or SUV. While the RAV4 is available, the interior looks too bland and seem like a step down (interior / feature wise) from the CX5. While the 2021 Tucson, RAV4, X-Trail, Ford Territory, Subaru Forester, are all in my radar, the fit and finish of the CX5 is too hard to past up. Heck even my almost 7 yr old CX5 never had any issue. Am only upgrading to avail of more safety features. Space is adequate for 1 child, 1 dog, 2 bikes at the back. The RAV4 has better resale value, but for me, I don’t buys cars for resale value as long as I keep it for at least 6 years. Only thing stopping me from pulling trigger on the 2021 CX5 is the rumor that it will be completely changed in 2022 or 2023. Anything you’ve heard / know of this?

Toyota is getting over on people because of their history of reliability. Inside the Rav 4 I couldn't believe what I saw. It felt like a GM product. The CX5 looks, feels, and drives like a better SUV. I don't know how anyone who drives both could see it any different. The Rav 4 may have more interior space so for people who are bent on that would go with it.

I test drove both, I fell in love with the CX-5, as they said the handling, fit and finish WAAY better in the CX-5 -- BUT I felt in 2021, buying a Hybrid Electric-Gas made more sense. I absolutely LOVE the fuel economy of the hybrid, but for me this is a people mover, a utility vehicle and the price was better than the CX-5 Turbo...the other thing is that the CX-5 body is old, a refresh is coming soon.

@@James-il3tq The RAV4 failed the "Moose Test", and the RAV4 Hybrid would be worse. The CX-5 did well in the "Moose Test". The Hybrid needs the stiffer suspension because it's more top heavy, and more likely to roll over if in an accident. A panoramic roof makes it even worse.

I paid cash for my 2021 Mazda CX-5 Carbon Edition Turbo w/ AWD over a year ago. In 1991, I bought a new Toyota Corolla, and I wished I didn't after a few months. It felt cheap, the driver's side window came off track, the braking was low quality, and it didn't take long to start rusting. That's old news, but it's the only experience I had with Toyota, and it wasn't good. It's been 1 1/2 years since buying the CX-5, and I'm still ecstatic with my purchase. It's already been a workhorse for me, hauling loads of groceries, bags of dirt, long wooden posts, and cinder blocks. And it still feels and smells like new. Recently, I got out of my CX-5, and it started beeping at me because I forgot to turn off the engine. It was so quiet, that I thought I did turn it off. I've bought 4 new vehicles in my life, and my CX-5 has been the best, by far. Zoom!

I did the same comparison back for my 2019 purchase. Both had non turbo engines, and no CVT. (say goodbye Honda CRV) One issue with the CX-5 was at the time, only expensive trim models were available in my area. Also, there is a Toyota dealership near my house. (which matters to me) Mazda dealership is 45 minutes away. I went with the Toyota...it also has the same engine as in the Camry. I also thought the dashboard of the Mazda looked dated. (specifically, the speedometer area) I have a FWD model (non hybrid) and I get 40mpg on the highway.

@God_Laughs _At_Atheists That may be the case, I had a Mazda cx-30 for 18 months, I got rid of it, when Mazda solution to the failed designed hydraulic valve lifters that start clicking after just 11000 miles, is to increase oil pressure with a software update to 110% of normal, and that’s just one of the only things they did fix, the front breaking radar was never fixed because according to Mazda replacement policy the Garage has to see the fault, it’s not enough you got multiple video clips showing all the problems, or when you can’t lock the car with the touch on the front doors, in rain or after car wash, solution install some foam In front of the touch sensor to prevent water to reduce sensor sensitivity. Or the camera controlling cruise control, wipers and lane warning not working in bright sun, rain, snow and fog or if the windscreen is filling up with condensation inside because the aircon to save fuel turns off at outside temperatures below 50F or 10C, regardless of what you have chosen on the climate control. This is just the short version, the car had a total of 32 faults al documented with video, pictures and reports from car computer fault analyst. So good luck if you get a chose a Mazda.
