I have a 2018 Tundra 1794. Received the recall notice and had my dealer fix the issue per the notice. They put the Tundra version of the waterproof seal over the sensor and performed the software update. They checked the sensor software before beginning the fix, and the sensor had been malfunctioning without any visible signs to me (diagnostics showed multiple error codes). They ended up replacing the sensor as well as performing the fix. Don’t assume it’s fine just because you have not seen any issues...

If you take a look around the engine bay you'll notice many wire connectors have no rubber boot covers, you'll see multi colored wiring coming out from corrugated conduit to the plastic connector and plugged in, some have electrical tape wrapped around the wire. Cost saving for the manufacturer to not apply moisture proofing rubber boots over connectors ? They need to apply better protection on all. See the connections in front of master cylinder reservoir on Tundra, I''ll be retrofitting a cover there before washing the engine bay.

Well hear this goofy crap Rob. I literally just got off the phone after Toyota called me saying there was an additional fix for my millimeter wave radar sensor, I said another one?! They said yes, this involves installing a sealant to keep water out. And here’s the kicker, my pre-collision sensors, you know all the ones in the bumpers, this feature would be permanently disabled as part of the fix. WHAT THE HELL TOYOTA!? I told them everything is working just as it should at the moment, and your not touching a thing on my Tundra. 😁If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! Crazy stuff!
@RobMotive5 жыл бұрын
Wow!! Did they say how much of a refund you’d be receiving? I mean you did pay for a functioning system when you bought it! 🤬

RobMotive your correct Rob, I’ve been thinking about that, I’ve paid for these crazy safety features, but no word on any refund of course! What is going on with cars and all this safety stuff. Is the government putting pressure on these manufactures to get these things out ASAP, and they are rushing the testing on it?! Who knows. IMO, these cars are making people “careless” drivers anyways. People feel like they don’t have to pay attention until they see a light or hear a beep warning.

The type of foam you used looks better than what they used. Still don’t understand how an aftermarket grill, especially one modeled after their very own pro grill and aftermarket lift, wheels and tires cause the issue they’re recalling it for. 🤷🏼♂️
@RobMotive5 жыл бұрын
Exactly!!👍
@VoltageDropDiagnostics5 жыл бұрын
I’m a Toyota tech myself so Maybe i can shed some light. What is actually causing the failure is water running into vent holes into the sensor. The foam is meant to redirect the water. The grill and lift kid don’t actually make a difference as far as adding the foam. It is when the system needs calibrated. TOYOTA didn’t want to be responsible for calibrating a system that needs to know very specifics heights in order to be accurate (remember, we are dealing with something that can be life or death) when the vehicle is lifted. And Toyota also can’t ensure that the mounting area on the after market grill is built to the exact specs as the Toyota grill. In theory, the sensor could sit off a degree or two, and not see an accident about to occur. In the lawsuit happy world we live in, and remember all the frivolous lawsuits pertaining to unintended acceleration. TOYOTA is just covering their ass. They did come up with a new letter that says that we can now perform the recall, but the owner needs to sign off that we are required to shut off the PCS system.
@RobMotive5 жыл бұрын
I’d agree with all of what you said. To be clear, the letter states that they will not perform the “fix” on trucks with aftermarket grilles...however, I’ve been told that some dealers are going ahead anyway.
@VoltageDropDiagnostics5 жыл бұрын
RobMotive Toyota came out with a second revised letter advising us to have customers sign a waiver for our protection. Whether all the dealers are following this or not, I’m not sure of. But I promise, Toyota’s stance on it is having us have the customers sign a waiver.

Ya took mine in for 10k oil change. All sudden sensor acting up and shuts off. Took in they tried to tell me the pro grill has different sensor. So put original grill back on and come back to recalibrate it or buy different sensor. It's a lease truck for now but looking to do buy out. Want to do more but dealer giving me Crap so I'll hold off. But lucky for me a pro taco came In for oil change. Lifted and every accessories on it. They check sensor and it was same part number as mine so they agree to order new sensor. Just pisses me off they try to pull anything to charge you and not warranty it out. Just because I order the pro grill and install it my self and not pay them to install it!
@RobMotive4 жыл бұрын
That sucks! Good that one came in and you could prove your case!!👍
@kylebacher80744 жыл бұрын
Ya still waiting to get new one in they said they order today and might come in tomorrow or next week. They said take 1hr to recalibrate it. There a video on the tube guy called the main corporate number and talk to them. They made his dealer fix his as he has a custom grill. Told them to put factory grill on and if still doesn't work then put new one on. They proved it was bad sensor but still tried to not do or charge him $1k for new one with labor. Main corporate after he called said no charge do it now. Corporate also told him if you get error to hold the cruise button for 3 seconds and cruise will keep working. Well I tried it and it works so even if it still happens again I'll just live with the light on.
@ALVIEDZANE5 жыл бұрын
1) That seems like a weak sauce fix on Toyota's part. But then, so was the design for keeping the sensor out of the weather. 2) Putting your stock grill back on to let Toyota do the fix is useless because of the fix they apply. Once your sensor is encapsulated in the neoprene sticky pad, you’d have to remove it all and repeat the process on your TRD Pro grill anyway. 3) The OEM grill has the sensor out in the weather a little more than the TRD Pro grill which has a little bit of a “roof” over the sensor.
@RobMotive5 жыл бұрын
The only reason one might (I stress “might”) want to put the OEM grille back on is to have the dealership do the software update. You would of course have to redo the pad once the sensor is put back into the other grille👍
