It's why you pay more for a Toyota over a comparable domestic (except the dissolving truck frames). The Toyota might have a little harsher ride, a little more road noise, and a little more interior compartment drive train noise, but Toyota does far more to protect the vehicle from rot by shielding areas prone to gather salt and sand, etc. I will always pick a Toyota over a domestic. For 30 years I was a GM and Ford fan. I got so sick and tired of both nickel and diming me, and having semi frequent higher dollar repairs I started asking mechanic friends what vehicles they saw that didn't have constant issues and most said Toyota, including a few diehard Chevy thunder fans. A decade later and I'm still a Toyota fan. There is a reason they hold their value and are infact the highest turnover on domestic brand's used car lots.

Watching Eric O use a scan tool, to me, is the same as watching Jim Harbaugh in a room teaching the Michigan Football team the plays, instead of watching the game being played. So...I have to say something... I always learn from you, each and every video! But, reading the instructions isn't a bad thing: at worst you recognize that they are crap and or out-right wrong, at best they save you time and headache. I spent a fair amount of my 40 years working, writing instructions for service engineers, the auto technicians of the medical device industry. I always wrote and tested procedures as if my job was make-or-break on the outcome, because it was critical for our field engineers and the patients dependent on the equipment they serviced. My spouse ran her business for almost 30 years writing service and operation instructions, mostly for medical devices, all over the world. We always read the instructions when available and we admit that some documentation is crap, but prefer to at least give it a chance to make our day. It usually only take a few minutes to read the instructions.

The spare tire winch in those uses a 5 point socket to lower them. I own one….and I couldn’t for the life of me figure out why none of my sockets would fit it. I lower it in fall when putting the winter tires on and check the pressure…then I lower it in the spring and clean it out. I like to keep them about 5-7 psi over inflated, as it’s easier to bleed some out in the side of the road if needed than to have it be low. As for the valve stem being mounted up…it’s likely to force you to lower it to check the pressure :)

I live just east of Houston, Texas. Working on cars in the heat is just a way of life here, just like you having to work through the rust and the crusties there. I did an engine swap on my concrete driveway last summer on my '04 Siverado with 307,000 miles on the odometer, 4.8L. It spit a spark plug and took out most of the threads in the spark plug hole. I thought about pulling the head and using a heli-coil in it or replacing the head but, then again, the engine had 307,000 miles on it, even though that was the only issue with the engine. OK, it had the usual suspect oil leaks, about 3/4 of a quart every 3,000 miles. So, I went with a reman engine (PowerSource - not a sponsor) that has a 36 month/100,000 mile warranty (non-commercial use). No rust and no crusties. Just a summer's long drought with record-breaking high temperatures. My biggest issue with the excessive heat was dealing with the hand and finger cramps. Once that happens, you're done for the day. On the other hand, speaking of hands, I have busted a knuckle using wrenches in cold weather, and I am flopping on the ground feeling like a broke my knuckle! That pain is not anywhere near as severe on a warm or a hot day. When you are not acclimated to the 90 and 100 degree days, I feel for you, Eric. Just as I am not acclimated to working on cars on days that have ice on the ground. I can take the heat, but I am a wimp in the cold. I'd rather dance with a polar bear than work on a car in the cold weather. Thank you for all of your videos. I am an old-school, shade tree type of mechanic and your videos help to keep me up-to-date on auto repair. My buying the tools to keep up with the latest diagnostic technologies would have paid for a Porsche, back in my day, but it's worth it!

The wheel gets mounted with the stem up so that water won't accumulate in the center "dish" of the wheel. Most steel wheels have four "slots" around the area where the center welds onto the outer rim. This lets the water drain out due to the profile of the center "dish" area. Hard to tell if that wheel has the slots due to the already substantial New England Crust. Another great video. I always learn something.

That's the weather we have for 4 months here in the deep south. People will say you get used to it and that's true, but we also have to be smart and do some things early morning or late in the day.
