First off, I have to give this customer props for his sense of humor, communication, and ability to gauge his knowledge and abilities. Can we have more of this customer in the world, please? Do not push on the caliper ear! I bent one on one of my cars once, and the brakes never wore evenly again. They are very very easy to deform, and impossible to put back where they should be. :( As a former California inhabitant, I can confirm, this is what working on cars is like in California! They just unbolt and come apart. My understanding of GM's strategy is that it will only completely disable ABS/Stabilitrak for an open circuit, short circuit, or completely missing wheel speed signal, but it has the ability to detect erratic signals like we saw here, and maintain functionality assuming it might not be erratic.

Yeah nice tool, but I do't think you need it for GM vehicles. I've done front hubs on Buick Lesabre and Chevy Suburban. If they all are like mine you don't need the tool. The hubs almost fell out or only needed a little tap. But I did hubs on a Ford explorer once and they took half an hour with a big hammer. Wish I I had that tool then.

Tensome years back I had a 1998 Mondeo that would lose power intermittently, and lose more power if you treaded on the accelerator... if you took the foot off the pedal and let the speed drop, it would resume normal operation. And of course it virtually never did this when troubleshooting. There were theories from throttle position sensor to MAF. Then on a particularly slippery day I noticed that when braking on mirror-clear ice the ABS would intermittently start pulsing instead of making a constant racket with fairly constant pedal force, and I had previously noticed that it would intermittently activate on grippy surfaces with little pedal force as well. But again, of course nothing like that happened when the seller or a mechanic tried to troubleshoot it. I have come to think that it probably had a problem with one or more wheel speed sensors, but all that would be masked by traction control kicking in - strangely the traction control indicator never went on, but my new hypothesis is that the car had this problem and instead of fixing the sensors, someone removed the light from the cluster. I never paid attention to whether or not it lit when fumbling with they key. I know about a case where a seller rewired the ABS indicator light from the oil pressure light to mask that it never truly went off. The new owner never got into any trouble with it and only found out when an inspector went in to check for codes and said there is a constant fault on the ABS, yet the light stays off after starting the engine - and that it always goes in sync with the oil light.

Those chevy wheel sensors can cause so many issues. In my 2009 Impala they would cause my car to throw a code and the display center would tell me "engine power reduced". The RPMs would go above about 2k and it would shift super hard. I just kept a 10mm wrench in my car so I could pull over and disconnect my battery to reset the code until i could change the sensor. And of course, the sensor is a permanent part of the hub assembly...

Back in the day you would never see a failed wheel bearing. Now with the unitized hub assemblies they're a regular replacement item. I understand why this design was used (easy installation on the assembly line...no adjustments) but definitely a step backwards in durability. It's not undersize bearings either, the bearings have to be a certain size to fit over the spindle which is designed to a strength level. Poor quality metallurgy is my guess.

When I grew up in the 50's, my home was 4 doors from a railroad yard where the locomotive would sort the box cars before sending a group of them to their destination.. Each time the locomotive crossed the street by law they had to blow the whistle. Well in the summer we did not have air conditioning and they did the sorting at night so as not to hinder car traffic. I don't miss that locomotive whistle any.

It’s because they started putting thin sheet metal wraps on the lug nuts because it’s cheaper than really plating them. Downside is it makes them not precise in sizing so you need odd sockets to fit them, or end up damaging the nuts.
