Thanks for the detailed video. I’ve never replaced contacts before but hopefully I get it done tomorrow. Great video!

I really wish I'd seen this video before I replaced my starter last year. I also wish I'd seen this video before I sold my "bad" starter for scrap.

I watched a video from a kid in Australia and on his rebuild there was a single bearing that the plunger seated against. I didn't see it in this video. Thanks for your contribution on this subject. Very helpful.

I think it depends on the age of the starter. I've seen some with the bearing.

@@OTRAMM wow thanks for your response I never thought I would hear from you. When I was watching your video it looks like the end of the plunger actually has a detent in it to accommodate the bearing. On a side note I followed your link to your website thinking I would find a link for the rebuild kit but once there I couldn't find one. I live in Montana and our local resources are limited. Thanks again for your efforts. Much appreciated 👍

@@williamhoward8732 we launched a new website yesterday and a bunch of the KZbin links haven't made it over yet. We get our rebuild parts straight from Toyota. They're available in the aftermarket but figuring out which ones are needed is difficult.

Help !!! 84 fj starter keeps sticking I checked plunger and springs they feel springy 3verything looks OK starter contacts are a bit worn but it cranks just won't stop just keeps sticking 😬
@OTRAMM2 жыл бұрын
Most likely just needs a new starter. I don't think there's much that's really serviceable beyond the contacts.

Thanks Ryan, another good video and timely. I bought a new starter but may keep as backup if I can find a starter parts kit for my 1988 Fj62?

The click has been happening on my 2 month old starter on my 2000 100 series. Do u think this could be the issue? I have checked my relays and fuses and everything is fine. It clicks when I turn the key but it starts after a few tries. Sometimes it takes 1 try other times it takes me like 20 minutes.
@OTRAMM5 жыл бұрын
That sure sounds like the symptoms of a bad solenoid. As far as I know you can't get just the contacts for a 100 series. What brand starter did you use? With as much work as it takes to get to this one I'd only use Toyota or Denso. Did you check all the starter cable connections to make sure they're tight and don't have any corrosion?
@brand1nn9435 жыл бұрын
OTRAMM last night we removed the new starter and cleaned off all of the connections, but it still made the same click
@OTRAMM5 жыл бұрын
Check the voltage at the starter trigger wire to make sure you're getting a full 12 volts. If you're close to 12 then I'd suspect the starter.

Otram, question for you on a 2007 Tundra 2nd Gen starter 5.7l. It is worth is to upgrade the starter contacts, or just replace the solenoid or just replace the whole starter? TIA.
@OTRAMM2 жыл бұрын
As much work as they are to replace, I'd only do it as a new Toyota complete starter.

i’m just now gonna have to do this project on my land cruiser this weekend. it’s starting really rough. but i have heard there aren’t any stories of the actual motor failing it’s mostly the solenoid and contacts. how do you think i should go about this ? thanks in advance !!

where can I find a cheap starter for my BJ40 from 1978?

No idea, we didn't get the Diesels here. Cheap starter and good starter are usually mutually exclusive though.

The plunger on my starter is not engaging. Can that be fixed or is the starter scrap?
@OTRAMM4 жыл бұрын
Like the solenoid plunger isn't engaging the drive gear? If that's the case a new starter is probably cheaper than messing with fixing it.
@Cayym4 жыл бұрын
@@OTRAMM yes. The magnetic switch is toast. Did not se a way to get it out of the case.

Is there a repair kit for this fj80 starter? Like a rebuild kit I actually took mine to get it rebuild and the guy from the shop told me that they don't make parts for this anymore. I didn't believe him so I keep my old starter an I want to rebuild it my self Because it has to be a way.

I don't know of a rebuild "kit" but the contacts and plunger are available aftermarket and from Toyota.

I recently replaced contacts and plunger on my FY62. I now get a grinding noise at the end of the start cycle - probably 50% of the time. Only lasts a moment just as the truck fires up. Any ideas? And am I hurting anything if i don't address it?
@OTRAMM6 жыл бұрын
Grinding noises are never a good thing. My guess would be either the grease on the plunger or pinion gear has gotten sticky and it's slow to retract or the return spring is weak. I'd look at it sooner rather than later. If it grings long enough you could strip teeth and replacing the flex plate is not a fun job.
@topherbecker6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Ryan. Any recommendations what to use (and where) to lubricate? The manual just says "grease" on the return spring.
@OTRAMM6 жыл бұрын
All of them that I've taken apart the grease has been in good shape so I haven't messed with changing it. I'd imagine a high temp grease like brake caliper grease would work well there. I haven't tried it though.
