Now u know the general consensus will be the 4.. it just looks cool but personally id sport anything with a 2j.. damn things are getting few and far between with all the “tuners” turning em up to 11 and warping the crap outta em or putting a nice new bay window up in the side of em. Those motors just wanna go though.. if all somebodies ever driven were big blocks and powerhouse cars and you put em in the passenger seat of a 1800hp turbo 2j and hit that rolling anti lag and pin em against that seat until you hit 200+ in 9 seconds and after you have em clean the shit off the seat, theyll never be the same towards em.. things are so crazy to feel in person,.

The prices are skyrocketing, even non-driving project car mk3's are going for $5k+. Nice condition ones I've seen going for mid 20's. Get yours while you can.

MKIII for me. I like the smooth classic lines. It's more GT car than sports car though.

At that time, this car was relatively cheap (compared to similar cars) and technically at a high level. The engine had a very good durability. My father had an imported US car with a fixed roof and the 6-cylinder, 7-m engine without turbocharger and 204 hp here in Germany. When I was a child, this was my absolute dream car in the 80s. i remember that the rear tyres were sligthtly wider than the tires on the front side

The 90 Turbo came with progressive power steering which made steering wheel less soft on high speed for more stability at high speeds Also side view mirrors are heated Way way ahead of its time

Love these in depth reviews! You explain everything so clearly and understandable. Also cool to see that this vehicle is basically just like a late model in terms of suspension design! Keep up the good work :)

Thanks, I'm glad you appreciate my work. To be honest, suspension design has downgraded over the years in the name of economy as driving dynamics have become less important, so this vehicle was ahead of it's time.

@@speedkar99 Yes, I see what you mean. Most manufacturers are downgrading their multilink/dual wishbones to a simple torsion beam. Which is fine for some vehicles but on a 30000+ euro/dollar vehicle I don't see why you would.

even after taking apart my mk3 down to open cylinders i learned a lot from this, these cars are just so accessible. you hit on all the things that are great about working on them and the few things that suck like trying to replace the starter without removing the intake manifold which is possible when you push it in just right:) good job! the cupholders are in the console of mine in a weird fold-down thing when you open it up

11:46 - not for adjusting headlight aim, it's if the motor fails you can still raise and lower the headlight housings. If you adjust this, turn headlights on and then off and they open/close, it will reset to the original closed position. Great for doing daytime sleepy eyes though!

I have the super monitor where the clock is that was available 87-88. You can access engine codes by numbers from there and clear them rather than pulling the EFI fuse. The manual headlight knob only raises and lowers the headlight . It does not adjust the direction of the lamp. The charcoal canister hose connects to a vacuum valve that's now broken on the thermostat housing. The other hose feeds it to the crossover tube and ends up at the throttle body. The vacuum valve opens up when the engine is warm allowing stored gas is to be burned. The oil cooler lines get hard and with age and leak especially near the oil filter. It's good to replace them with generic oil hose and also the power steering hoses as well. Another leaking point is the cam position sensor O-ring. A power steering pump rebuild seal kit is about $13 on eBay. Use a puller to remove the drive pulley, otherwise you could warp the shaft by attempting to pry it off.

My brother in law threw the Supra NA motor in a '94 Toyota Pickup. Pretty nutty ride on the street. From the videos he showed me it had insane climbing power.

I only have an 88' NA Supra, but I've never loved a car more than her. Mine was near mint even at 115K miles, but yeah they need a lot of work It's more than worth it though. The car is pure fun and luxury while turning heads all the time. Some suspension mods and sway bar upgrades and you got one of the best/most fun cars out there.

Pleasantly surprised to see this has a fuel pump resistor like those in the much later Lexus RX350 and in the same location too. It's that finned Aluminium box by the front right suspension tower @10:23.

I owned a Mk3 2nd Gen Turbo Targa for 17 years. Loved that car! BTW there are two cup holders in the arm rest. It flips down from under the lid.

7:21 What does using 10W40 in an a leaking old engine designed for 5W30 help with? My 20 year old Toyota V6 1MZ-FE loses a half quart every 3 months. Still using the 5W30 and 10W30 the manual calls for.

It's a "thicker" oil. Inherently allowing it to take more heat before starting to burn, to put simply. Likewise though, this also means in cold weather, the oil will be significantly thicker, slower to circulate and take longer to warm up to operating temperature. Which is fine if you take time to warm up your car anyway, but some people don't and that could result in premature wear on the engine.

@@enigmaPL There's more to it than letting the car warm up. As the engineers say, most of the damage occurs during crank-up/initial startup...before the oil has had a chance to warm up and circulate to the top of the engine. That makes using thicker oil the worst thing you could do. Gotta go with the highly educated mechanical engineers on this one. Besides that, using thicker oil to help slow down oil burning is one thing, thinking it will slow down leaks is another. Better to just keep adding the recommended oil in both cases.

Love this.. had a 82 MkII that I bought in 85 with 53K on it… Drove it until 96 and 185K to AK and back to the Midwest. The head cracked in AK. Got it fixed and drove it 4 more years until the clutch and the front seal stated leaking… It sat until 2011, when I just off loaded it for space… I wish I had had room to store it….

We have a white '87 in our garage.... hasn't been started in years....I looked at it last summer.... cranked the engine over for a few seconds..that's about it... it needs to come out of hiberation soon...

That is the consensus. Never get rid of a nice supra. Started 20 years ago and now have more than most people consider normal but never dread the commute. Very fun and sexy cars

Hey man nice vid! Just wanted to point out that on a 7m the coolant returns to the rad via exiting the thermostat and coming through the top hose and enters the engine through the bottom. Really like the vid otherwise and surprised I came across 7m stuff when I watched your ej25 dissasembly! PS the link to this wasn't in that vid description 😉

My wife bought a new 1986 Celica GT-S. The lumbar switch also moved the side bolsters in and out. Loaded without air it was $18,500 Canadian, and the Supra non-turbo was $22,000. Lots of money back then. Celica was a great car, just a rust bucket later on.

Definitely a nice car for it’s time. This video reminded me of why most of us HATE car engineers though, that oil filter looks like it would be a nightmare, along with changing out the fuel filter. Also this was back when oil changes were recommended every 3,000 miles or about 4800 kilometers.

The oil filter is pretty annoying, I need to change my oil soon and I'm not looking forward to it. Also the fuel filter isn't as bad as he described, don't have to drop anything.

This car isn't being garaged at night. You should get a fan shroud for that radiator, a stock unit will work. The 7MTE engine actually came with two catalytic converters, the down pipe had one which made doing an oil change an extreme pain in the ass because it made getting the oil filter access almost impossible and then the other one where you installed a plug, I didn't use a plug, I used a long screw driver and broke apart the internals of the cat and dump it out, now it's straight through. I did install a 3 inch down so I don't have any cats on my Supra either. You must have the Canadian version of the Supra, that particular steering wheel is only found on the 1989 US Supra's and the cruise control button is not on the panel below the left side AC duct and this car was either an automatic transmission in the beginning, or it had a swap out of the instrument cluster. I don't think that car ever came with TEMS, that's not the cars original instrument cluster.

for the LSD oil, I have a cusco clutch type lsd and Motul 90PA is a excellent option for these type of lsd

@@speedkar99 I don't live in the USA, but www.rallysportdirect.com stocks it 25$ for 2 qt. I'm sure other suppliers carry it, it made my diff engage much smoother than regular 75W90 diff oil and half the price of Cusco LSD oil, the Subaru guys run them for their clutch LSD's. you could also try calling www.flatironstuning.com they have a good selection of Motul products

The mk3 came with two cupholders that flip down from the lid of the center console. Although it's easy to break so Im not surprised if you dont have that piece in yours

You don't need to drop anything to replace the fuel filter on this car. Just be sure to use the correct size flarenut wrench on the lines.

I prefer the one you are working on because I have swapped the engine out of that 1 about 10 times.. I had a friend a long time ago wanted to make 900 whp. And blew it up trying to make it there that means I have seenine 10 engines that made over 800whp before Before they pop... This was my friend's car and I was felt bad for him because he did all this for this car. So 1 day when I hit the lotto I'm going to buy the car and make his dream horsepower as give it to him as a gift.. 😊

do u really have to drop the gas tank for maintenance? what are those access panels in the hatch for?

the access panel in the trunk is for the fuel sending unit not the fuel pump so yes you have to drop the tank to change the pump

The mk4 was a legend before, during and for many years after that film. I would argue that the mk4 made the film. Tbh its more about the engine but the car is quite the classic too 👍

Thanks for the vid! I've seen a few of your tear down vids and really enjoyed them. I've owned quite a few Supras. All MKI and MKIIIs, though. I would like mention a few things: The MKIII absolutely had a plastic underbody tray that covered the whole under engine bay with slots for helping draw air away. They're rare for likely obvious reasons. haha It also had cupholders. They're located under the center console lid. Pop it out to unfold them. You wouldn't be the first owners I've met who might have missed them. The lumbar doesn't necessarily move left and right. The lower back (lumbar) moves in and out and the "left and right" control is actually the side bolster adjustment for moving them in and out. Take care!

Canada must be the one of the worst places to own a car. I live in Australia and I dont remember seeing rust on a car in my lifetime. I had a 97 Prelude VTI-R with zero rust. You guys need cars specifically designed for winter.

Did you mean mechanical/ cable throttle instead of fly by wire throttle? I was under the assumption that the throttle maintained by the ECU was called the fly by/ drive by wire.
