I just bought a 97 Tacoma right before you started this build so hopefully it gives me some motivation to clean up my truck😂

FYI for future reference. To get the cone washers to pop out, there's no need to hit that nice shiny housing with a hammer, or force a screwdriver or chisel between the hub and the locking housing. It's likely to get damaged by this technique and then you'll have trouble with the seals. Of course one could sand or mill the surface flat again, but there's a better way.... The right way, which causes zero damage to any of the parts: take a hammer and brass drift and hit the end of the studs that hold the cone washers. A few hits and they'll loosen right up. Grab them out with some pliers. WheeliePete demonstrates (kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZXNoneGjq5sqq8). I've done it a couple times works perfect. WheeliePete also has an excellent vid about rebuilding the Aisin manual hubs (kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWibg558ZtKIhac).

FYI - to get those cone washers out it's better to tap on the stud rather than on the hub body. They will pop right out real easy. Plus it keeps the body from getting banged up. I just use the head of a long bolt and a mallet.
@Kiwigd3 жыл бұрын
.. agreed.. that way has worked for me many times 🤙
@stevendouglas65933 жыл бұрын
Yep, hitting on the end of the stud is the way to go. I bought a brass rod and slightly hollowed out one end. This hollow locates the drift on the end of the stud and the brass prevents damage to the steel stud.

Curious what all you replaced during this? I assume the o-ring/gaskets, looks like the bolts were new as well? Did you use all the same springs, detent ball, cone washer, etc? Thanks again. Awesome work!

Nice color combo bro. I would have done red on the inner hub with the black outer hub but overall nice build bro she is coming along nicely
@philgriswold21333 жыл бұрын
My 1998 pickup has red centers, I guess they changed colors at some point. I always learn some little trick on your videos. Using the grease to pick up the detent ball was a good way to make sure not to drop it. I have one of my hubs that is hard to engage. Now I have the confidence to take it apart and grease it up. Maybe some rattle can. The zinc looked great with the black/gray combo.

The part at 2:05 that you have your finger through. When assembled is there supposed to be any play in that? Or is that a sign I should replace my hubs?
