Any car designer can make a car handle well - that's how they make race cars - and these cars are usually not drive-able on the road. Rock hard suspension, aerodynamic devices that will scrape the ground any time, totally uncomfortable.
A car maker has the very difficult task of making a car handle as well as possible, yet be comfortable at the same time. Generally, it has been the norm to accept that driving agility will always be at the expense of occupant comfort - that is, until the arrival of the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA).
Through extensive testing and development, Toyota have developed a platform that combines the bet of both worlds, i.e., allowing for excellent handling and agility yet retaining a high level of occupant comfort.
Watch the video and see how this is achieved - and yes, whilst they were working on this platform, they also took care of several other factors, such as aesthetics, robustness and visibility as well.

Well said. A new approach to your videos? Funny but simplifying things for all to understand. You also highlighted todays "endless pursuit of huge stylo 19-21 inch rims / lowered suspension / race car hard suspension" which often results in a rock hard ride, bouncing non stop on our poor local roads and ultimately loss of roadholding. Ride quality......often forgotten and neglected. 👏👏👏

YS Khong, your review is simply superb. Similar to your driving skills. Although this review is already 2+ years old, it appears fresh, just like it was done an hour ago. The approach, presentation and style is excellent. You covered the topic very well. You explained with diagrams, examples and showed real-life driving situations how, why, what, who, when and where it works. That is most important and you showed it all. You are a champion not by any means by luck but a champion who covers and covered all areas, bases and content to completion and success as well as to the satisfaction of your customers and viewers. YS Khong, you are blazing a trail ahead of all others. 😊 ❤

Uncle YS, put aside power, in terms of handling, how much better or worst btween Altis and Civic?
@YSKhongDriving
@YSKhongDriving Жыл бұрын
The Altis has a different handling characteristic from the Civic because of the differences in the rear suspension, and also partly because of different settings. At the end of it all both handle very well, as you can see from our videos on both the cars. The main difference is that the Altis can get away with a softer setting than the Civic under the same conditions. The Altis has a rear double wishbone setup versus the multilink arrangement in the Civic. Both work, but work slightly differently.

Could you do a comparison video for TNGA vs Jinba Ittai in terms of the ride & handling characteristics?
@YSKhongDriving
@YSKhongDriving 4 жыл бұрын
TNGA is a platform built on 3 pillars - agility, Stability and Visibility - given these philosophies, the designers use this platform to build the car. The TNGA achieves these objectives, and also cuts down production time and costs. As for Jinba Ittai - it means Horse and Rider as One - this is a philosophy that guides the way Mazda designers work on their designs - the notion of making the car in such a way that it allows the driver and car to connect. So for Jinba Ittai, they also seek to make the car handle well, and also place the key controls to help make this happen . One is a Toyota belief, while the other is a Mazda philosophy, and serves to guide the company, (and in doing so, make its customers happy and therefore be loyal to their brand) For me, mt philosophy in life is :- "If you want to do anything, do it well".

As I said in the video, handling can be achieved by using harder suspension. The advantage of the TNGA is that it can achieve the same results as another car that has harder suspension. I would say all 3 cars can handle well, as I have driven all three, but each one has a different character. The tyre choice also affects the handling, as you can see from some of the videos.

UMW Toyota are always overpricing its car compared to other Japanese brands. They are pricing its car so close to the conti cars that it makes it easy for buyers to move to conti car brands. Just a couple hundred ringgit more a month will enable one to move to conti cars. Just my 2 cents!

Ride and handling balance should be what mass car makers strive. In previous generations, Toyota makes comfortable mass cars but does not handle well. Honda made better handling cars. But for me Proton made the best ride and handling mass cars when they had "Lotus R&H". They may not be as refined or will have some deficiencies (quality, poor FC, etc.), but we cannot deny Waja, Preve, Iriz had better ride & handling balance than most of their rivals.

I would like to add that the TNGA takes ride and handling to another level. You really should try it out.
