Those marks on the chain will eventually line up again. It takes around 20 turns or so on the crank. But not important as he mentions how to decifer proper timing. Excellent to.point how to release the tensioner. No one else on KZbin tells you to do this👍👍

This is very true, after making roughly 7 full rotations they should line up again.

At timepoint 15:32 the o-rings you mentioned that control oil pressure should be noted that they affect the thick VVTi cam next to it. On some other Toyota engines it is a figure 8 o-ring. Many times startup rattle of death will occur while the engine is building pressure. Some people have found when they have done valve cover replacement these o-rings come in the package as well and after replacement, the startup rattle went away. It is my observation that these o-rings fixed the issue instead of needing a new VVTi solenoid or variable cam gear.
@tundramanq
@tundramanq Жыл бұрын
This kind of thing screams to me of ignoring the recommended maintenance guide or trying extended oil replacement intervals. Had a neighbor with a used Prius that had a chain break after a couple of years ownership never changing the engine oil and filter.

I really appreciate you making this video as i thought i had missed timing. A tip for anyone having trouble getting the tensioner to release. Leave the nuts a little loose and tap it with a hammer, and then the tensioner will come out

First off, ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED BY ANYONE. Followed your steps exactly, and am getting a p0012 code. No symptoms of bad timing, and I can't tell if I have reduced power. I replaced the vvt solenoid, and timing sensor, no luck. I'm wondering, if the chain was 1 tooth off hypothetically, wouldn't I get a misfire? If I don't get a misfire or rough idling, is it safe to assume my chain isn't a tooth off? The only thing I can think of, is that I set my timing correctly, but when I installed the tensioner, maybe it didn't expand right away, and when I went to start the car for the first time, maybe it skipped a tooth? I don't have any more ideas, and don't mind redoing the whole thing if I knew I had to. What I don't want to do, is redo everything, and get the same result because I didn't locate the problem.

Nice view of rotating crank CCW, then CW to get the tensioner plunger to extend. Maybe add a link to an old video of yours, if you have one, of the tensioner hook before installation, and how it is released. Maybe show the ratchet on the tensioner too if there is one on this engine.

Very clear filming. What was the reason of replacing the Timing Chain? I'm asking because you didn't change the sprockets. If the chain was stretched it would have worn the sprockets. I couldn't imagine that chain ever stretching. If I could see wear on the sprockets It would have meant end of life has passed. How was it determined the sliders were bad? Is there a wear indicator? I would have considered changing the sliders too because they are plastic but if they looked new. Don't anyone get me wrong, I'm totally into preventive maintenance. Is the timing chain pre lubed? I would of really liked to see how you prepped the engine's deck and how clean you got the pistons. Yes you would have had to turn the crank to get each piston TDC. Just put it back right when you are done. LoL. Replace the VVT filter and check or replace the VVT Solenoid. The valve can fail slowly by not opening or closing properly making it hard to detect until it is changed and the VVT works properly. I really like your videos. I'm learning new ways of doing things. You are going to get comments because you display your work. I like reading them too. 👍

Hi, Thank you for the timing chain installation explanation. This was great. 😊 My problem is the black timing chain guide does not stay in place while installing the timing chain cover. The cover seems to be rocking on what I believe is the timing chain guide. I am very frustrated the cover will not lay flat against the block. it either is open on the back side or open towards the bottom front. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you. Rgds, Mark

thank you so much. how many links are in the chain? how many teeth on the crankshaft gear? find the smallest number divisible by both. After that many chain-link movements you will have again all 3 marks aligned....

Thanks for the great video! I had to rotate the crank pully 2 full rotations, not just 1, for the timing marks to come back around on the cam gears. However, after 2 full rotations, they are perfectly in line with where you say they should be. Any harm here?

Yes correct, they call it #fipg. Just apply to the corners where the metal pieces come together because traditionally if it does leak, those are the locations where it does. Maybe he will show in the last video.

Not just do it outside, wear old clothes because those will smell too. The wife will be very mad. And when done, park it outside if you can't hose down the diff with solvent or get to a self service car wash to blast any spillage away. It makes no sense why it smells so much..

@@mikeal-omari1631 Depends, i think that 2010 Prius have a defect in the piston rings, the holes are too small and these clog up, making the engine to burn oil, the EGR cooler clogs up too due to this, and eventually the head gasket blows up because of this.
