You are right! This song reminds me of an uncle who's war ravaged soul in Korea, and his life as represented in the lyrics of this song. He lied about his age and was too young, yet he survived the battle of Bloody Ridge. I know for a fact that his life is represented in Kris Kristofferson's lyrics in this song. Kris didn't fight in Korea, but served as a bush helicopter pilot in Vietnam. But, both conflicts, like all combat of other wars, will produce the same souls this song represents. He died from lethal alcoholism, however he met many Sundays as described. Tortured souls roaming the Sunday streets and their journey to their graves. And only Kris can describe in such a way to reach "our" souls. A true classic! Although Trace's rendition is good, yet far from Johnny Cash's mastery that Kris hand picked to perform.

Incredible. This song has been covered by many of the greatest Country Artists in history, and yet his virtuoso performance of this classic gem is unsurpassed. He delivers it in such a manner, I believe, that only a soul who's been an alcoholic, or a drug addict, or a man who's had his heart broken in pieces, can really hear. I think this is what Kris Kristofferson had in mind when he wrote this sad yet beautiful sang. Hank Sr would be proud. Bravo Trace. Well Done.
