Trachycarpus fortunei winter protection. Frost cover for windmill palm . Located in TN zone 7a. This protection method should gain 10-20F and protect you from temps down to -5F on a Trachycarpus fortunei. This protection can be left on for 2-3 months. Insure top is angled to prevent snow/moisture buildup
Correction, these Planket frost cloths are not 'waterproof' but very water resistant especially when wrapped in a way where water runs off them (like a roof slope)

90 degree angled electrical conduit and pvc pipe available at any hardware store
GE 100 string along incandescent mini lights Available during holidays at Lowes for $4 each (2 used on this palm)
35-45F Thermocube Amazon
Any suitable string or ties to tie chicken wire and frost cloth.

@@mikemillson9572 Yes for sure covering till March is the safest. Most of my palms are larger (The one in the video is one of the smallest) and can take 10F or so easy just trunk wrapped over lights and my temp history just shows 3 years out of the last 20 going below that beyond this time of year. If you have small palms you should for sure keep them covered if they don't have full size trunks. But I can do a simple cover on mine in a matter of minutes.

You can grow one and use the foamboard box method with Christmas lights over winter to protect it from Dec-March is the only way.

I use heat tape, a cage, straw, leaves fabric and boat plastic on anchor bay.

I'm a a rural zone 6a. Can Trachycarpus palms live in such a place without protection?

No Trachycarpus will need 8a to survive without protection or 7b to survive about 90% of winters unphased. In 6a you would need to cover it like this video approx Dec 15th-March 15th and if temps drop below 0F supplement with a blanket or additional cover or cover using the foamboard box method. 6a is pretty cold

Mine survived in Czechia (Zone 6b) - I only used wrapping fleece and filled it with dead leaves. This December temps didn't rise above freezing point for 12 days, it was 8.6 fahrenheit for 3 days in a row. Now keep in mind I have a cold hardy variety from Bulgaria, it's supposedly the cold hardiest variety ever. So no you don't need to be in zone 8a. Oh and also the palm is still juvenile
