From 2020 onward I have used more makeup than ever before - I work in a field that is heavy on meetings, 95% of them virtual, on camera. With wearing masks etc I used more foundation, more concealer, more powder, etc. than any other year. As a result, my collection has grown but also refined if that makes sense. I'm early 40's and still in my full makeup groove - started my collection and learning in early 20's. I also track what I use and make sure I am using something and writing my thoughts on the products. I declutter frequently and pass products along to students, family, friends etc. I have at times felt some guilt, but there are worse things in the world. For reference, I have a small ensuite bathroom that is converted to a tiny beauty room and I have about 150 eyeshadow palettes. They have changed and evolved in terms of colour story and textures as I've aged, but the passion doesn't change (: Love watching you Lauren and I always learn so much!

This is what both the average makeup consumer (largely women) and those who have never and will never wear makeup (largely composed of men) don't understand: that COLOR and TEXTURE are (a) aspects of numerous arts and provide an artistic outlet and (b) are therapeutic. Plenty of research for decades shows that even looking at a certain color can change our moods--now imagine interacting with them in the very active modes of makeup lovers (swatching, making curated palettes from singles, etc.)

I have a larger makeup collection, and I was feeling a lot of guilt surrounding how much I had and how things were getting shoved to the back of the drawer. One thing I started doing in January of 2022 was pulling together a bin of makeup I wanted to focus on using every month. I changed it out every month and I shopped my stash. I still made a lot of purchases, but I realized that taking the time to put things away at the end of the month, and pull new things really kept me in close contact with what was in each product category. I have over 100 eyeshadow palettes. My monthly makeup bin really showed me what I was using, and what just sits. It helped inform my purchasing decisions as well. I feel like most of the things I purchased this year I'm more likely to use, and there was less "aspirational" purchasing. I've stopped trying to make myself feel guilty over the quantity of items I have, and I'm just trying to be realistic in my purchases. I give myself permission to not buy things that everyone is talking about if I know they're not the sorts of things I wouldn't normally gravitate towards. I know that's not groundbreaking, but it's easy to fall into the trap of purchasing the hyped product. I don't want to be disappointed by something that was never meant for me in the first place. Spending so much time organizing my collection every month (putting things away, and pulling next months products) has really helped me know myself better when it comes to makeup that I actually use. I loved this video Lauren! Thanks. ❤️

A few years ago I started addressing a deep depression I'd had for the previous three years. Then I started using makeup in Jan 2021. I'd never been much interested in it when I was younger (I'm 46), but this sudden passion for coloured eyeshadows began with the BH Zodiac palettes and got me very quickly. Sale after sale, I built up a large collection, 70% low cost and drugstore, 20% medium range and 10% high end/luxury. In 2022 I bought fewer palettes and more face makeup and skincare. I like thinking of my eyeshadows as an actual collection, so for 2023 I plan to get something from brands I still haven't tried and make a few purchases from the US. But yes, I do need to become more organized in the way I rotate and use my stuff, I still haven't done any declutter... even the cheapest palettes still remind me of a good time ^__^

I love how you explained and sparked in me a new way of thinking of "abundance". We all hear that particular buzz word as a goal (for example: "this month I'm going to manifest the abundance I deserve any family deserves", etc). Abundance is like, a buzz word for goals. BUT then when we have it, we often feel guilty for having it and even more so for not routinely consuming or engaging in whatever item or activity we have in abundance... Maybe I'm not making sense but you inspired me to become aware of this self-imposed guilt and mitigate it by mindfulness. 🥰😘 Happy New Year!!

This year, I decided to approach my makeup collection in a similar way: instead of feeling guilt about having a lot, I decided to feel happy and grateful about having a beautiful collection and try to simply use it and rotate it more, but in an organic way that works for me (no panning projects, that’s just a chore to me, but instead feeling happy about whatever and whenever I had the opportunity or I created the space to put on makeup). Also, I accepted that I’m not a minimalist, and having choices is what energizes and motivates me to be creative, so, having a big collection is perfect for me, as long as I’m enjoying it. BTW, the Nars Kalahari palette and all the duos are getting discontinued, they’re in the “last chance” section at 50% off 👍🏼 I got the Kalahari duo based on your recommendation and it’s lovely!

I have quite a large collection especially for someone who doesn't make videos or anything. I don't feel anything bad about having all this stuff that may not get used but maybe once a year. I use what I want when I want but I also make a point to look through everything every now and then . And I will reorganize it to make things that haven't been used in awhile are more accessible and are seen easily. That way I'll use it. I also like to have days that I have extra time to just play where I will do my eyeshadow a couple times or do a different look per eye. One day I might go in and play with my blushes, putting on a variety of them and using different techniques. I love just taking a couple hours for makeup playtime. Even though I'm not going anywhere, no one will see me and I will wash it off in a couple hours it's my joy.

I pick out new stuff at the beginning of every month to use during the course of the month so that way a lot of my collection gets used and I don't just use a handful of things during the entire year. It also keeps doing my makeup every morning exciting and fresh instead of becoming monotonous. Of course there are the times where I get inspired to dip out of whatever I've chosen for the month, but I'm perfectly okay with that. It's really helped to keep me from buying new stuff I don't need because it feels like I bought a whole bunch of new stuff at the start of every month.

I enjoyed the project a lot though and favorites clearly emerged.

I started doing project pan/empties this year but I didn’t put pressure on myself. I just wanted to have certain items picked out that I knew I wanted to use up, whether because they were older or I wanted them out of my collection, that I could use as my go-to stuff when I didn’t want to think about it, I was rushed, etc. I also wanted to have the satisfaction of looking at progress using something up. I didn’t make any successful eyeshadow pans and I’m okay with that. I did some face powder pans and used up 5 out of 24 goal items (I started in June btw). I’m happy with that! I am focussing more on my successes than what I “failed” at, because I can just continue working at it and I know I’ve enjoyed wearing and playing with makeup this year anyway so! I hope this explanation helps someone’s perspective

I have way more makeup than the average beauty consumer -- over the last couple of years, I began purchasing products as though I'm a content creator myself. Because of that, I developed a lot of guilt around how much I have and how much I haven't used. This year, I decluttered quite a few things (mostly old products) and I've written out a makeup inventory that I would like to go through to track my use of each product this year. Even if I use something only once, I'd like to get a better idea of what I'm reaching for on a consistent basis. I really appreciate your transparency on this topic and that you're someone who really works on using what they already have in their collection. I unsubscribed to a majority of the beauty channels that I used to watch. You're one of ten channels that I'm subscribed to (I'm a newer viewer of yours), which is crazy because I think I was subscribed to at least 25 at one point. A couple of the channels I'm subscribed to don't even focus on beauty anymore or don't post very frequently. All of this to say that I'm going to try and be even more selective this year with my purchases, work on using what I already have, and continue watching creators that have a similar mindset -- like you! (I'm a little all over the place with this comment lol.)

But I want to use my collection. I’ve found that when things are visible to me, I interact and use them. I’ve had to refine my makeup collection so that it’s totally visible and I can use it easily. With all of that being said, guilt with what makes you happy, your passion, your hobby, and your job is just a really rocky road. Happiness is reasonable with you and your surroundings, especially when you actively practice gratitude.

If you could do a video on strategies to fall back in love with makeup, I'll adore you even more. Plus I'd love to see your spreadsheet. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

I keep everything on a Google doc so it’s easy to track my usage. I just track for the interest of it. I also figure if I haven’t used a palette or perfume in over a year, I should probably pass it on.

I followed your lead on this project. I put painters tape on the back of each of my palettes. I put the tally marks right on the item. I too quit about Aug. due to family issues. I just recently looked back at my collection and I feel really good about decluttering due to my info. It’s not a bad thing. I feel like I’m rewarding myself with new makeup that can now come in.

Much love and best wishes to you Lauren💕😊It’s always a pleasure to tune in to your videos and listen to your thought process. I like clicking on your videos and just hearing you talk. You have a real philosophical approach to your channel, that I can hear for hours. Which in turn, you come up with makeup topics and videos that is so appealing and fresh. You put in the work and it’s awesome to see. You ask questions, you come up w/ some tips and show the results. Like the part where you only used a palette 4 times, putting a number on it so nice to see. Cuz like you mentioned, it’s your reality and most YT’s reality and even part of my reality that has like 20 palettes compare to one or two my friends have or use. Most YT’s don’t put in the much deep thought to or work, but you do and it shows and I appreciate you for it! Have a wonderful start to your year!💕

Something switched in my brain and I'm no longer so eager to buy the new stuff!! I'm very much content with using what I have and only buying new products that would add something new to my collection or replacements. I love the idea of keeping track of my uses though!! I started this video, paused, had my husband help me create a basic spreadsheet to track, then came back and finished the video. Really excited to see how I actually use my current collection. Thanks for the inspiration!

Happy New Year! Thanks for making your videos- they are the perfect way to unwind while I battle a cold! You made some really good points and I have put a project pan into place for 2023, but for number of uses for eyeshadow which is much more realistic.

It’s interesting that this is all relative. I have 18 palettes after passing on a few this year, which to me, seems like a lot. I used to be that person who panned their only palette! But I really like every palette I own now. Each one makes me want to use it. I think this is a good amount for me to feel excited and have enough variety but be able to appreciate every item. I love this topic and reading other people’s comments!

Hi Lauren, I found this video interesting and helpful. Recently, I bought a new cabinet to house my makeup collection. I found that in my prior cabinet, I simply used whatever happened to be on top. I decided I needed to change that if I was going to use what I bought. 😀 Now, I pull out several items of each type of makeup (except mascara - I use that up and then move to the next) & use those for a week or two. If after that time period I don't like the lipstick/blush/foundation (whatever it is), I declutter it. I'm not a KZbinr, but I have a lot of makeup! I think I might start keeping track of the eyeshadow pallettes used, too. That way, I can truly rotate through them. Thanks for the idea! Have a great 2023!

Wow I loved your massage, I have felt the guilt of not using my makeup because I feel like I’m wasting money :( its honestly horrible. But this past months I have been dealing with health issues, even eye conditions were I can’t put makeup on for weeks of months and that just makes me feel so frustrated on top of all. I feel better now that I don’t feel alone in this, and hopefully start to see my makeup as something fun again and not feel guilty of what I have. Thank you so much ❤️ lets have a better mindset for the thing we enjoy to fully enjoy them again.

I absolutely love this idea. This past year has also been rough for me and I think due to general stress and the worst pollen season ever I've had a very bad case of eczema on my face and eye lids making it impossible to wear makeup. I started a casual project pan at the beginning of the year and was not able to complete it since I couldn't wear makeup for almost 6 months. I work from home most of the time now and went from wearing makeup 5-6x a week to maybe 1-2x a week if that. This is a great idea to see what I love and gravitate towards to potentially pass on some lightly used makeup I don't love to friends and family. My collection is just too large for the huge decrease in makeup usage I've gotten too since 2020 (I'm sure many feel the same.)

I lost my passion for makeup about two years ago, but I still like purchasing new makeup products. The worst combo. I've spent about 7-8 years being obsessed playing with makeup (eyeshadows and lipsticks particularly) creating more than 10 eyelooks on a daily basis. Now I create 10 eyelooks per week at the very best. I used to own about 160 eyeshadow palettes and now I have 33. I dream of having 5-6 palettes but I really like the ones I'm left with.

i reorganized my makeup by seasons over the holidays and am excited to rotate thru them that way! Haute Mess Tom mentioned using each product once to rotate thru each category and see what we enjoy most so i thought it would be fun to do as well. love what you said about being grateful for any passions we have around a hobby, no matter the length. x

I decided to join you in tracking my palette use this past year because I was feeling similarly towards my collection. And what’s funny is I also stopped in August for various reasons. Like you, I still felt like it was a valuable experience. It allowed me to declutter more intelligently with better informed decision making. I am going to continue tracking it this year too because even if imperfect, I enjoyed it and learned from it.

One of my main takeaways from this year is even if something doesn’t get “used” on my face, but I like looking at it, get joy from swatching it or seeing it on my shelf, that still has value and brings positivity into my life. That realization made me feel a lot less guilt with my collection.

I've been tracking palettes/eye makeup I use each day for the last two years. I don't tally mine tho, I just put the date and what I wore, its just made it easier and low key for me. I use Keep notes by Google in my phone to keep track. It has definitely let me know some of my habits in regards to how often I wore makeup and when. I would wear it the most during the spring and summer and way less to none in the winter months. I'm not sure what the difference is mentally but thinking back over 2022, I just remember feeling too tired and simply not wanting to get up earlier to do it. Which eventually got me out of the habit of getting up early and now I have to go get back into the habit of getting up earlier to do it, such a circle smh. But it's a new year so I'm curious to see how it will compare to the previous two years. Thank you for sharing your process ❤️.

Loved this video! 💞 I had a baby last year and for most of 2022 I was so preoccupied with the baby that I really stopped caring about how I looked. By autumn I was finally in a routine and ready to start looking & feeling pretty again. I rediscovered lots of things in my collection and have splurged on a few new things from Sephora. I definitely got my spark back and am feeling inspired for the new year ✨️

Lauren, this was a fantastic video, I'm so happy that you have your love back for makeup. It makes me sad when i hear other creators say they are feeling overwhelming and falling out of love with makeup, because i love makeup, it's my passion, my hobby, it's inspires me and it's my relaxation time. It's mainly why i watch KZbin and if it's one of my favourite channels and the creator says that and starts moving away from makeup and thats mainly what their channel has been about, I'm sad because I'll probably have to give up their channel 😔. I don't want to feel bad about how much makeup i own, i don't feel bad i love it, if i new release doesn't grab me then i just don't buy it and i rely on my KZbin makeup channels to help me make good purchasing decisions, for example the new Makeup by Mario foundation, i was really interested in it but after watching alot of reviews, i don't think it will work for my skin. There is not much makeup that i regret buying because of all you amazing content creators on KZbin. Sorry, i think i went off on a rant 😂 but thank you for making this video your amazing and happy new year 🎉 ❤️

Lauren... I believe I discovered you in 2021 towards the end. The video you were posting was where you were duping another pallet and I can’t remember which pallet it was but a lot of singles were used and bringing them together to create your own version of, let’s say a Natasha Denona palette. And it changed how I viewed my make up. So I will forever be grateful because I feel like I get so much more use of my make up now and I have a very big collection though I’m a small, small TikTok Content creator.❤❤❤ U.

I so appreciate the content you make about your relationship with makeup. It inspires me to apply similar insight to my own habits. We all subscribe to content that we feel aligns with how we wanna use our makeup, and if that's changed in a creator's content, it makes ALL the difference to see them be self-aware and actually articulate and express that ❤ Creators aren't regular consumers, that's just reality. Hannah Louise Poston put it so well when she compared it to being a professional chef running a restaurant business VS someone just buying groceries for themselves or their family

Happy New Year!! You know it's so funny that you did this video because I've been contemplating this very issue today lol. I dont have as many as you do, I have 25 palettes. Most of them I purchased over the last year. But I do have some that are 3 to 5 years old. I have tried rotations, random number generators, and project pans to try and use everything. I do feel a bit of guilt because I can't use them all. I thought well I'll try to pan the old ones but then the newer ones will get old. Its crazy lol. Anyway, I feel better now knowing I'm not the only one. 🙂

Your project to use your palettes inspired me to try to do something similar myself! I use the tiny decisions app to roll in a palette and use it. I’ve been trying to hit a pan in the palette if possible before moving to the next one, or just get some uses before rotating something else in.

I deal with a lot of guilt in my life…my makeup collection being part of that. I am married with 2 boys and don’t have anyone to share my love of makeup with. I have a lot….but I try to keep reminding myself that this is what I have for me. That’s ok! I just need to love what I have and not fall for the FOMO. If I love a collection and refuse to let myself purchase, I feel good! And I absolutely DO buy, but in a more meaningful way.
