I had a seventy four model for twenty years. Ran it professionally. Sold it when things got slow and I miss it every day. It was super reliable and easy to maintain and did the job well
@tractorman4461 Жыл бұрын
One of my cousins bought this one new in '73. He hired out to the city street department, so the majority of its life, it sat and idled while doing light digging for water or sewer repairs. Then he'd install sewer systems outside the city limits too so it'd get some workout too. I've only had it about 10 years or so.

@@tractorman4461 That's a great machine probably one of the best and most reliable they ever built. I know some people talk about the buttermilk drive transmission but I had great luck with mine. No issues ever. I was extremely fastidious about my maintenance and that machine never let me down once. I miss it often. Hoping one day to get an E.

For that tractor to have sat outside for over 2 years and it fired up that easily is pretty amazing. Good to see her brought back to life. Full watch with a thumbs up Wendell. Its been a good one Gary. I think my cousin had a new torque converter installed by the dealer just before I bought it from him. I've had it now for a number of years. I've left it down at the daughters house because there is still a bit of digging to do down there. I need to remove a few trees on her lot and another down there so it was time to get it loosened back up and ready to load a few logs !!

Well I tell ya what John, for some reason back then kids would dump sugar in the fuel tanks or in the oil fill and take rocks and break out the guages and lights. That's why my cousin bought all these lockable covers as an option. I actually have a NOS set of lockable engine side panels that have never been installed on this one. He said it was just too hard to install them too.

Thanks for explaining how to properly hook up the connections to the battery. There are so many videos out there where they throw both connections on and then start tightening. I've tried explaining that to some of them but I guess they'll have to find out the hard way. Of course if they cause a spark and the battery blows up on them they may not have to worry about trying again. That old Case sure started quick!!! Wish some of the tractors I use often would start that easy! 👍👍👍

That old gal usually fires right up just like that every time, hot or cold. But since I've had it this is the first time its sat outside that long of a time without being started and run. I think most people think Oh, its only DC voltage, it won't shock me....failing to realize the size of the BOOM and the quantity of the sparks that come off a direct short by a piece of shiny metal held in their hand. LOL The smart ones will learn, the other ones will just wonder what happened and do it again next week. LOL

I ran Case 580,s for several years working for a railroad contractor. There good machines and nimble & fast. When I decided to buy a backhoe I wanted and bought a John Deere. Because the Case foot swing is hard on my knees. And I wanted wobble stick controls. And Also the hoses on the JD are SAE pipe thread. You dont have to buy the more expensive hoses with the factory case ends
@tractorman44613 жыл бұрын
I commented earlier, but it got deleted Randall. Dang. I'd said that I bolted angle irons to the foot pedals to change the angles of my ankles while pressing the controls. That made a big difference. I didn't know the JD were SAE pipe thread. That's cool, the JIC and ORB fittings ain't cheap !! I've got a 90* swivel on the hoe leaking right now. So that's gonna be a good one.

"unauthorized use of a screwdriver", that is a funny one! I could barely hear the starter cranking... That impresses me every time! My new Volvo XC90 needs more cranking than that... even if it ran 5 minutes before! Lol! I totally agree with this one: "Do what you can to get it in operation THEN with it running determine what you need to do to get it to the level of operation at which you are comfortable". That is the best way to prevent wasting money on a machine that is not worth it. Thanks!
@tractorman44613 жыл бұрын
Well Joe, I don't think it spun more than once or twice. When I was trying from the seat all you could hear was the solonoid clicking. You'd be surprised how many new owners buy a ton of stuff and change it all BEFORE they even try to get a machine running with the original stuff. So many variables are then added to the situation.
@peewee.31383 жыл бұрын
I ran a 580M in the early 2000’s at a town water department where I learned how to use a 4 stick. Really enjoyed it and then moving on to other units- I found the John Deere controls easier than the Cat controls.
@tractorman44613 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure I could use the fancy new controls. I think some of the new units can be flipped around control wise to control like their 'normal' or the Cat style. A matter of flipping a switch and probably control solonoids change flow of fluid to operate like their competitors controls. Bear in mind Peewee, I'm just kinda guessing. My old 4500 Ford is a 4 stick hoe.

So he kept it tarped and started it up 2, 3 times a year until I bought it from him about 20 years later. So yeah, it's in pretty good shape. I've got all the NOS security panels he never installed. Totally encloses the engine from vandals.
@regsparkes65073 жыл бұрын
Isn't that something? First click and away, I think you'll make this into a workable 'treasure' again. So far no engine smoke either, typical Case engine, ( in my opinion and limited experience ) I did notice you connecting the Positive cable first, before the Ground,.. smart move,... brought back memory of a guy who did NOT do this, and his metal strapped wrist watch completed the circuit for him, with extremely painful results.
@tractorman44613 жыл бұрын
People do not realize the volatility of the explosion when a battery with 1000 CCA is directly shorted to ground with an end wrench !! And yes, in a bad situation the wrench can weld itself to the machine frame....just THAT fast too. I've not done it, but I have been guilty of a little arcing and sparking on a time or two. @tractorman4461 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the old three stick Case's and 4 stick Fords are a bit different than the new ones for sure. I've got to dig a small footing in a month or so. That might be a good time for a simple video. But essentially, the swing is accomplished by two foot pedals, the outriggers are the two small levers on the extreme left and right. That leaves the three for the boom, dipper and bucket in the middle. Top make it worse, the Fords and Cases three main levers do not track each other either. LOL

Yes, I believe you should be able to find various styles of thumbs for the 580. I bet if you google 'thumb for case 580 backhoe' you will find something interesting. Good luck. There's nothing like having an old hoe for the property !!
