I bought a 1023E TLB configuration new in 2012. I also got a heavy duty barn-style 12X20 fabric shelter (around 1300). It's still in great shape. Got a bunch of stone spread out to put the shed on top of, and tied it down. I have 2.2 acres, and after a few years, decidedly have done more than 20,000 dollars of landscaping work and clearing. I separately have a x310 with a mower deck and snowblower for the driveway and mowing. I got that in 2015. I've dug up over 50 stumps (large pines) and moved logs (pines felled) and made a log bridge over a stream out back to get to the back of our property. This channel (and a few others) inspired me to get this tractor. Thanks all.

Hey Tim don’t forget to tell Nolan if he’s doing work for other people he will have budget in a trailer and tow vehicle if he doesn’t already have one. Also liability insurance, a $150 tilling job gets expensive when you rip out the guys main feed line to his sprinkler system he forgot to tell you about or his well head that you back over that was hidden in the Long grass, or the Septic D-box that gets crushed . These things happen, trust me. (30 yrs plowing New England snow!!!)

I've got 12 acres that I've taken care of for years with a Simplicity Prestige with a 54" deck and a cart. After fourteen years bought a zero turn commercial to get the mowing done faster. Mow about five acres. Rest is wooded. But there were still many jobs around the property that I couldn't get done and so started to look at sub-compacts tractors. After much research it came down to the Kabota or Deere. Watched many TTWT videos, which were very helpful in my decision. Final decision was the 1025r with bucket, backhoe, mower deck and a brush crusher. Decision came down to the dealer proximity for service. So far, quite happy with my purchase and the dealer service has been great so far. Working on getting a shed for it now.

I've 4 acre of pasture and 5 acres of woods. I'm a "City slicker" who adores the country living, we too have a Husqvarna with a 4" deck and it's strong, but not for 4 acres, we use it for the parts of the lawn surrounding our house, which "Johnny" is a tad to heavy for. I bought my Johnny 1025R because this was nearest Tractor dealer to my house and the service is very good. I would have gotten me a MF but wasn't silly enough to drive 100 miles to have it serviced. I bought Johnny brand new and bought is with the belly mower, this though is my biggest regret, not that the belly mower isn't good, it is, but it defeats the versatility of Johnny. So I've got me a flail mower and retired my belly mower, because I grew tired of having my lawn always shaved off on a small ridge in the soil.... Tim, keep rocking, I enjoy your content a lot and actually bought my Johnny because of watching and following your channel!! :)

Just ordered new 2038R yesterday, with loader, backhoe and belly mower. I shopped multiple locations, and multiple brands.First I shopped Kubota, and very much enjoyed the dealership. It was very friendly, had lots of equipment, and the pricing was competitive. However, at the end of the day I felt their competition to the 2038R wasn't close. I checked out Kioti, but the dealership is only open 6 or 7 months out of the year. The bobcat brand looked nice, but I wan'ted something I could get parts and service for the life of the tractor. I also shopped at several different deere dealerships, some even being the same company but different locations. I had varying experiences at each, with their largest Ag-Pro facility being difficult to get help. I suppose this might be because of the season, or that walk in customers don't yield profits like large farmers generate. I shopped Bridgeport equipment, and ultimately they had several locations, and each was helpful and amazing. Their pricing was $4,000 cheaper than Ag-Pro, so that was the determining final result. It was amazing how complex, and confusing all the choices can be. It was way more complicated then purchasing a truck, almost as complex as buying a house. Thanks for the excellent Videos, they have been invaluable in the decision making process.

I got my 2038r last year. Almost bought a 2650 and the 3350 they would not sell to me. Kubota at the time did not have a mid mount deck and that was the deal breaker for me. 2038r has lots of power. I live in western Pa. and I 8 mountain acres to cut with The under belly mower and brush hog. The 2038r doesn’t even break a sweat.

I am also looking for loader plus backhoe, for 32 acres of forest. I want to take my time in the next couple years doing road clearing, cleanup, creek culverts, etc, and I'm having a difficult time deciding on cash for 1025R (about $20k) or finance the 2038R with backhoe. The price for that setup scares me, but I probably need the bigger tractor. If you don't mind, what was your cost, all in?

My Johnny 855 is a 1991 model and I never have had problems ordering parts for it. The tractor has maintained and improved our 21 acres for almost 30 years with never a trip to the dealership. It's as strong today as the day I brought it home. It's has no seeping and the tractor stops as soon as I take my foot of the direction pedals. It's the best machine of any kind I have bought in my life. It's important to change oil, I change mine and the filter at the beginning of every mowing season even if the oil doesn't look dirty. I tried using citgo oil one time instead of Deere oil and the tractor lost power, with small engines you can tell power loss immediately. I have been using Deere oil ever since and have no plans on changing no matter the price. Good episode Tim. Good Luck with your new Deere Nolan.

Great advice Tim. I purchased my 1025R from a dealer that from the minute I walked in the door, made me feel like family. The other, closer, dealer didn't have time for me. I arrived at the dealer about a half hour before they closed and because the salesman had just left, one of the service techs talked to me. He kept wanting to call the salesman and have him come back but, I assured him I'd return the next day. Anyway, we sat talking for a good half-hour and he wanted to take me outside and show me how everything - drive over deck, loader removal, etc worked but, because it was close to closing time (actually past) I wouldn't let him. Showed up the next day and the salesman was absolutely outstanding. He had left early the previous day because one of his customers had a problem and he went to his house to help him out with his new tractor. I never felt any pressure to buy, just a methodical and relaxing discussion trying to determine what my actual needs were. I have discovered over the several years that I have owned my tractor that this dealer had gone above and beyond when prepping it before delivery. I've had several people with similar size tractors tell me that they can't pick up anything with their front bucket because the rear end comes off the ground. I never had any problem because the dealer puts fluid in the rear tires of all tractors he sells with front end loaders. Maybe I could have negotiated a better deal but, I believe the price he quoted me was fair and the hours he spent with me were well worth any commission he received. (I did talk him out of a free hat).

flick 2601, the Dealer putting Calcium in the tires is an excellent idea! I had a 55Hp 4WD that was able to lift a Gravel Box off a Tandem Truck, and in hindsight it was the charged tires that enabled that feat. It also frees up your 3Pt hitch for attachments.

This was an excellent discussion. I have had my BX2200 tractor for 21 years and at the time of purchase the storage space was the issue that kept me from adding a loader which I really could have used and wanted, but now I have been heating my house with wood and move some pretty large pieces of wood around and need to find something with a lift capacity greater than my BX tractor would have had. Additionally, when I purchased my BX tractor they had just come out so there are so many more accessories available both from the manufacturer as well as the 3rd parties that you have shown so well. Those 21 years on me have also made me appreciate the hydraulics so much more. Thanks for sharing your insights on this equipment it helps a lot.

But, once I started using it and doing projects around the house the remorse quickly went away. Despite the price, it is the best outdoor DIY piece of equipment I have ever bought. The drive over deck and quick attach loader are money. I can do lots of things with it. Only thing I would do over is give more consideration to the backhoe when I purchased. I still may not buy it, but I didn't even consider it when I bought.

A grapple w a tree trunk or stump in it gets real heavy real kwik, keep that in mind if you are going to do much clearing or cleanup. Also gets very dangerous when you are trying to pile up to burn and have to lift it up on top of the pile and it is not very level. On a tractor that can barely handle it in a paved parking lot you can get in a mess real kwik.

Accessories that I strongly suggest everyone consider (aftermarket or OEM): Skid-steer quick-attach (SSQA) bracket for the loader (many come with it standard, but sometimes it’s still optional). Bucket hooks to attach rope & chain to. Forks (either clamp on or SSQA; but the clamp-on style, although cheaper, does have less effective capacity due to sticking out further from the pivot point of the loader). I got mine on sale from palletforks.com; but there are other sources as well. ROPS-mount canopy. Even if you like hot weather, or live in a more northern are where it just doesn’t get that hot; it’s both good for reducing your UV exposure as well as a place to mount stuff, such as... 12v roof-mount fan. These are available from trucking supply stores, as well as Amazon and eBay; and really help on hot days. Backup camera, aimed to show both the rear implement and what’s behind you. These are available as pre-configured kits; but you can also get a camera module and LCD module from Amazon or eBay (if you can hook up a Nintendo, you can hook one of these up). Mirrors. I got a set marketed for golf carts; and made a set of brackets to mount them to the loader frame posts; but there are lots of other setups that could be suitable. Walkie-talkies with an earpiece; if you ever think you might work with someone else (and you probably will, even if they’re just kicking stuff into the loader bucket or hooking & unhooking a chain around stuff, while you stay in the driver’s seat). And the other ear should have an earplug in it; diesels can get noisy when working hard. Alternatively; ISO-tunes, a cell-phone holder, and one of the walkie-talkie apps for your phones. Long-reach grabber tool... so you don’t have to climb off the tractor to move something like a hose or other small object. To hold this when it’s not in active use, either attach a “cup” magnet to it; or get a wall-mount broom holder, and attach the magnet to that, and clip the long-reach tool into the broom-holder. I put mine on the inside of the loader frame’s vertical posts... out of the way, but in reach when I need it. Step: there’s a guy (at retailrems.com/ ) who makes a bolt-on step for the GC1700 series; John over at Louisiana Tractorworks & Projects did a video a couple of weeks ago about it, so I ordered one. BIG help for somebody with a bad back (like, um... me). I don’t know what’s available for other brands; or if you’d have to go DIY on one. Also makes one a lot less prone to grabbing the steering wheel when climbing up. Battery-powered fuel transfer pump... because holding up a 5gal can of diesel fuel is a pain in the neck (and shoulder, and... well, you get the idea).

I had the dealership put 500 # each of fluid in the rear tires. A lot of the reviews I read before the purchase was that JD utility tractors were light in the rear and it limited what or how much the bucket / forks could lift. The only thing I have added was a 3 point quick connect. This tractor is a beast and has not failed at anything I have asked of it. Hi Tim, yes you need to include the Massey GC series on here. I don't know how it is in the States, but in Canada they have a lot of dealers and they are an old company and very well supported. They all come with the SSQA option, so that rules out any implement issues with getting things like a set of pallet forks, grapple, or things like that. I would also highly recommend to get the pallet forks at the time of purchase as that greatly makes the tractor more useful for moving stuff around. It will change how you store your items, and what to do with things.

On an unrelated note to this particular video... It would be really cool to find a location somewhere where someone had a couple dozen acres or more of "play area" where you/they could host a "Tractor Party" for TTWT viewers. We could bring our tractors/attachments and play in the dirt with loaders and backhoes and box blades etc, move brush around, till, brush hog, etc. It would be awesome to see various makes and models of equipment in action in real life and even be able to operate each others machines if the owners allow. It would also be a super valuable experience for those looking to purchase a tractor or certain attachment. I could see such an event being a huge hit and possibly an annual TTWT gathering. Obviously, everyone could chip in to have a big cookout as well with lots of cheeseburgers! The trick would be to find someone with a farm or something that had some acreage they'd be willing to provide for such a thing. (And if their insurance would allow it.) If I had land I would look into hosting such an event, but sadly I do not. How fun would that be though, to have a weekend of camaraderie with the TTWT community and actually be able to bring and play with our/each others equipment? :-D Tractors and burgers during the day. Bonfires and sharing stories in the evening. I may just be daydreaming, but something like this would be super fun if it could be organized! (Seriously, if anyone wanted to host something like this, I would definitely help organize it.)

Another really well done video. I tell everyone that you will not use these tractors for what you think you will use them for. Today I used it to lift a paddle boat up and pressure wash it and then put it in the lake. I have had mine for 8 years and do new stuff with it all the time. Also, and you make this point regularly, I am pretty much maxed out for size regarding snaking my way between trees, etc. Lastly, good comments on attachments. Lots of us have more invested in attachments than the tractor.

Bought mine in March. It sat outside at the dealers all winter close to the road. The road that they put salt on and lots of it all winter. The salt spray caused the hydraulic fittings etc to corrode a bit. After I took possession it never spends a night outside but the next one will be ordered or bought in the summer.

I, too, own 1 acre, but live next door to my in-laws who have 1.5 and we take care of their property too. I just added a 45 loader to my 2007 X728 on Saturday and am excited for all the capabilities it's opened. I definitely overpaid for the loader ($3,300), but it was cheaper than buying a new 1-series with a loader. My X728 runs perfect, so at least I know what I'm getting myself into. The additional costs that I had to pay for, which I didn't anticipate in advance, were the ballast weights ($150), hydraulic pressure relief valve ($166), free-wheeling valve control lever ($17), and a hydraulic shut-off valve ($85). My valves and lever came in the mail today, and I'm excited to get everything installed tomorrow.

I went to 3 different dealers when looking for our 1025R all under the same parent company and all 3 had significantly different pricing/offers- They varied by almost $4k. Shopping around is super important.

I see some good points below, a couple items i think are important to think about 1. don't go too big that you cant haul it 2. I prefer Turf tires, you can drive on your soaking wet lawn and do no damage, and i think it digs just fine with them and works great in the snow. if you are using in your grass most of its life you will love having the turf tires, seriously no regrets and i have done tons of gravel and dirt work with mine. 3. if you have friends with attachment make sure you are buying something big enough to use those attachments, i have about 6 or 7 close friends and we all have tractors, but we dont buy attachments if one of us already has one so we can share. I personally use a 30 hp on my 1 acre and never say its too big, but i have some attachments that one of my friends cant use because say a 1025R has shorter tires and the 3pt hitch wont lift high enough for some of my attachments to work properly on his machine Good luck it will be the best wheel barrel you ever owned.

Johnny Wishbone, my first 13Hp Yanmar 4wd had Turf Tires with chains and a tow behind Fine Cut Mower which was ideal for backing the mower down steep ditch banks and mowing the wide ditch bottom without getting stuck! The fine cut mower also turned brush into dust, only smoking the belts once in about 10 years. At that time period Yanmar had a marriage contract with dear John and was painting them green!

Tim, My son just went thru this with some help from me. We compared JD 1023, 1025, and Bx2380 all with bucket, 60" mower, and ballast box. JD has compare tool on their site. Very helpful but had BX2370 only available. I told him to watch your videos, which he did. Biggest differences was axle capacities were considerably higher for orange, and fuel consumption considerably less with orange. The lift arm hydraulic control is better on JD, but he is not going to be using attachments much. So, after meeting both dealers and testing all three, it came down to the price. JD offered $250 more for his trade in than Kubota. His new BX2380 will be delivered Monday.

When my friend bought his tractor the salesman told him to keep using his JD D140 tractor just to mow the lawn because mower decks for the 1025 were more expensive than the box store lawn tractors. If you have the room to store both tractors then it’s maybe something he should consider and then use the money he had allotted for the deck for a different attachment?

I had considered this when buying my 1025r as I had an x320 at the time. I read the comments on the internet about these sub compacts having a poor quality of cut. But I can say the quality of cut from the 1025r is leaps and bounds better than my old x320. My lawn hasn't looked this good ever. And my property isn't flat, it's uneven with some elevation. So even if you have the space for two mowers, it may be worth getting the deck especially for resale value. My .02.

It's a fair point. One tractor to do the lawn stuff, the other for doing work. Growing up, we had a JD lawn tractor, and a Farmall A. Both had the "same" hp rating: 17 hp, but were orders of magnitude different, lol. The JD worked great for minor things like pulling a small utility wagon around with mulch etc, or for pushing a bit of snow. You weren't going to get it to pull heavy loads around hills or out of the woods, dig you out after a snowstorm; or pull a plow. disc, cultivator or harrow in the garden- it's just not made for that kind of thing. That's what the big tractor is for.

The wife and I shopped for a sub-compact 2 years ago and chose a Kubota BX23s. The John Deere dealer had to be coaxed to walk across the showroom to talk to us, wouldn't budge on price, criticized the Kubota on features that weren't even on the new models. They almost forced me towards Kubota, but I also used a Massey 1720 for a day. That seat!! (Turning to 'backhoe' positions was so very inconvenient). Kubota's are amazing machines. Another thing I recommend is don't be doing your research, question asking, etc. on the same day you are buying. That is the fastest way to get upsold. Do all your research ahead of time, and when you decide to buy, go to the dealer knowing exactly what you want, and tell them exactly what you are looking to buy.

Very valid points. Having a 1025 myself I’ve had the chance to get into several projects like yourselves. It’s a very capable machine but it has limitations. Another great comparison I have kicked around is a Vermeer skid steer... rubber tracked a bit more stable on hills and for grooming beech volleyball 🏐 courts. 💯 agreed any machine is only as capable as the additional attachments. My opinion is there is a sacrifice to a multifunctional machine, I would not order a backhoe for my purposes I would rent a machine designed for the task. I ordered my 1025 with 3rd valve up front and a hydraulic top link and tilt cylinder on 3 point hitch. I have a box blade that we cut the sides down on so it will scrape better & added a 4 in one bucket @5’ wide just before they started offering 4’ model I welded excavator teeth on this bucket ( comes to about same price as a tooth bar). A tiller and York rake are two attachments I need to invest in. As you may suspect my hydraulic pump is maxed out, functions are jumpy or slow to respond because of where the flow is needed or from the fact it’s a sub compact that is highly capable but has limitations. I would like to see if Vermeer1000 model using a land plane, box blade, tiller demo bucket and York rake if it would be a smoother than a sub compact machine.... I say this because the foot print is similar as is lifting capacity, I wonder if the hydraulic system and pump is built a bit more robust to handle a different style of punishment? Any knowledge you or your channel base have on these machines and their attachments may help with new property owners. I think the Vermeer would have been a better fit. I love my 1025, didn’t know the longevity of the mini skid steers and bottom line is they cost more.
@balanced4harvest5524 жыл бұрын
Mandel, good point about renting an excavator which is more versatile and out produces a backhoe. Skidsteers, if they have the Hi-flow option for attachments will have the extra juice. If you're in snow country a tr a cked skidsteer doesn't have the traction because of reduced psi ground pressure. I really wished Skidsteer mft added steel tracks as an option. Some makes did have them in the past.

The problem with the John Deere higher end equipment is that they don't allow the owners to properly repair them. Everything must be done by a certified dealer. I have 1.3 acres and part of it is quite hilly. 5 years ago I bought an X738(full time proportioned 4x4). It was more money than a 1025 that had the 3 point hitch. At that time I wanted to stay with gasoline. I have front mounted snow blower and blade for the X738 and I am pleased with both. On the back I have click-n-go 25 gallon sprayer, grass catcher, weight bracket, and electric dry material spreader. I have no regrets on this equipment. The only thing missing was a loader bucket. So a year ago I bought a 2025R and I really like it but I wouldn't want to mow my yard with it. Oh yah it did have a 36x48 insulated building built. I do not know how I managed without the bucket and pallet forks. I am not impressed with the front mounted blade. You can make the piles taller. One of the front attachments I really like is the Artillian front bracket (now I need grapple) that accepts a trailer ball mount. I didn't realize the 3 point hitch did not lift very high. Tim while I agree that going to larger implements even if they stay in the cat. 1 grouping get more expensive, also the cat 0 implements can also get more expensive as fewer are produced. As you indicated, unless you plan to and have the ability to do your own wrenching for more than basic maintenance, the service and parts department is far more important than the sales staff. I will also agree with the rebadged tractors, but would expand your list from just green and orange, even if they may be in the fringes of rebranding tractor. While we have all found additional uses for our tractors or our situations change, a careful evaluation of our needs for the tractor uses and then educating ourselves regarding those uses, is in my opinion the best way to make a good decision.

Coy Patton New Holland is the other solid brand. Mahindra and like are good tractors but not market segment leaders. Unless the budget was tight or you’re buying used and it’s a great deal not sure if I would plunk my $ on an import, when the top three Kubota, John Deere, ………… will hold their value better on the flip-side. The other one I would consider as number 3 or 4 is Yanmar.
@coypatton31604 жыл бұрын
@@mitchellkasdin1899 I hope everyone does not confuse your brand loyalty and brand dropping with my statement. I deliberately did not name drop! However, since you did, I will venture out there and say for me in my area NH would never be in consideration for new equipment or even newer equipment. Now that is not intended to slam the brand itself, but to slam the lack of dealerships present in my area. Service would be over an hour trip with to the closest dealership (which has little of the brand in the lot-lots of a different brand they also are a dealer for and even greater selection of used equipment). So as my first comment indicated there are other brands, but if one needs dealer support (service department, parts department and such) the individually really needs to focus on this departments in dealer selection for tractor purchase. Oh by the way the other name you dropped is also not on the radar due to lack of a dealer within a greater distance!

1 Acre is NOT too small for a sub-compact. I have lived at my home on a 1 acre lot for 20 years. I started with a well used 318 and built a loader for it. Very handy tool I will say. A year later I bought a bigger tractor - John Deere 420 and moved the loader to that machine. After 8 years it was time to move again and purchases a x720 that I put the load on (with a lot of re-fabrication). i used the loader on each tractor a handful times a year (sometimes just once) but it was handy enough that I was not giving it up. When Deere moved to the new series X700 and dropped the loader option, I was stuck. Either I stay with my x720, move to a newer tractor without a loader or go with a Sub-compact.... 2 years ago I bought the 1025r with loader and Deck. I felt silly for about 2 weeks with such a "oversized tractor" on a 1 acre lot... but then I realized, I have my loader on my tractor ALL THE TIME just to use it like a cart. It it so easy to put on that I do it all the time to move something. The biggest benefit to my loader was adding a set of forks!! My neighbors all look at me with a jealous eye so I KNOW that made the right move. My next door neighbor also has a 1025r on a 1 acre lot, the neighbor on the other side of me is considering one and so is the neighbor across the street!!! So the real deal is this... compare a 1025r with a deck to a X758 w/deck, PTO and 3PT. The 1025r will be cheaper, stronger, more capable, better resell, tigher turning radius....truely a NO-BRAINER!!!! The loader at $4000 is crazy expensive, but they make the tractor the true value that it is. Buy a 1025r and YOU WILL NOT LOOK BACK! A GREAT INVESTMENT!! Good luck
@seansysig4 жыл бұрын
Good advice Tim. The 1025r is perfect for my 5 acres. We just bought the WorkSaver electric grapple. This implement is the bees knees for our land. My advice is don't buy a backhoe if your just taking care of 5 acres or less, just rent a 11hp mini excavator for an extended weekend. I dug a 100' trench for water & power from the house to my 16'x 20' barn with leanto for implement storage. In the same 3 days I dug two 4' deep footings for the barn and 4 holes for 8" sonotube 4' deep for the Leanto roof supports.

I disagree about the backhoe. I use it for lots of "tiny" projects which would never justify a rental. we'll show an example in an upcoming episode. Anyway, each to his own :-)
