Everything about the new shop will always be reduced to the foundation. The painters blame the finish carpenters who blame the drywallers who blame the framers who blame the foundation peps who blame the graders and so forth and so on. I would lean on the requirements of the company laying down the foundation and floor since they are doing the warranty. Have to go with their requirements AND I would bounce that off of others to validate. Have to have the foundation right just like with Christ. Wishing all a joyous and heart warming Christmas celebration! ✌️🙏

Merry Christmas folks, we just did a project with our mini. Definitely colder on the 17G up here at Mannisto Cay. We were dealing with 12" of frost but insulated the ground to make it workable. Cheers folks! Liking the U48-5. 🌴🎄🚜🇨🇦🇺🇸❄️

I would recommend spending the money now on proper backfill for under your slab vs. more money repairing it when it fails in the future. I know I like to save money where I can, but that isn't an area I would go cheap on. Merry Christmas and safe travels!

All you need to take out is the organics, not the top soil. Just 4" or so of the grass. If not, it will decompose and the slap could sink in places. Also, use gravel for under the slab, not sand. It's cheaper and actually works better than sand for under the concrete.

I was always under the impression (and not claiming I know) that topsoil was considered organic material, is that not the case? Good to know if so...

Use gravel insted of sand under the concrete and dont forget 8 inch of foam under the building 😉 and 2 inch of foam 4 fet around the shop. I did on my shop 40x60. But we can have -40 C here in sweden were i live🤣. Merry christmas and a happy new year❤

Topsoil does not make a good substrate to build on. The organic material will degrade and leave voids. You need to remove all of the organic containing soils prior to compacting.

Hi Tim, I am a building contractor and have built many buildings on slabs and I highly recommend stripping off the topsoil where you intend to build. Top soil doesn't have the stability to support a slab long term and you could potentially get settling under the slab resulting in cracks in the floor or depressions under load bearing walls. You could replace the topsoil with shale or gravel or crushed stone, which ever is most economical. Someone once said "build your house upon a rock" or something similar to that
@danfarris135
@danfarris135 23 сағат бұрын
When the boss built the new factory on land that used to be sheep and cattle yards over a hundred years ago the contractor had to dig out 12 feet of “topsoil” and back fill with good fill before pouring the footings and slab. There is some noticeable settling after 20 years of the floor but the concrete preform walls seem fine.

You made the comment that sand cost so much, how much does rock cost. You really need to take all of the top soil out until u get to a solid base for the rock has a good foundation to compact to. This way the cement will not be cracking up as bad. You have to have a a good and tight foundation under the cement. I don't know what the rock cost out there but I would check it out. Or you could check out digging out until u hit a solid base and haul in clay and build up that spot with clay before pouring cement.

You absolutely have to remove all the topsoil. Is there anything cheaper then the sand to refill with there? Clean fill? Clay? Stone etc etc.
@schackghs16
@schackghs16 Күн бұрын
I suggest removing all top soil and organic matter to get to a good undisturbed base then backfilling with crushed gravel/road base to make a good solid foundation for your slab. I am curious though why you are planning to backfill with sand? Is this normal in your area? Sand is really not a stable base.

Crushed concrete as fill. Much cheaper than sand or gravel. Next cheaper material is asphalt millings. Use sand to fill the top couple of inches to level the area for your foam board insulation.

They say to take out topsoil because the organic material will decompose and settle leaving voids under your concrete. You can probably replace it with dirt you took out of your pond

One suggestion to save time and wear on equipment. When the pile is tight/frozen use the Mini to quickly loosen so the tractors don’t need to work so hard getting a full bucket.

Please don't cheap out on the dirt work for the foundation! 🙂 Here in Colorado it happened a lot in recent decades. In the 90s to -2010s or so with our clay soils, LOTS of things were built without removing enough of the topsoil and clay. Lots of stuff here built in that era has had to have all kinds of bandaids or even torn down because of soil issues. They had to tear down about half of a mall that opened in the early 2000s in Broomfield because of it. I even lived in a place in the early 2000s where the HOA had to sue the original developer because of it and they had to dig out all of the soil in the whole neighborhood and try to band aid the issues, redo drainage, etc in hopes of mitigating it. Learn from the very costly mistakes made here and do it right! Spend the money on the right dirt work that has been approved by a structural/geologic engineer familiar with your area. You really want the right setup for your area to avoid expansion/settling/water issues. It would be worth waiting on installing some of the toys inside for a couple of years and spend that budget on making sure your building is setup correctly.

When approaching a pile, back drag the top off towards you and then scoop that up rather than trying to lift from the bottom. Secondly, can you create a borrow pit somewhere else on the property to swap materials to trade top soil for fill dirt to raise the grade? Then add sand on that. Merry Christmas!

I ran into a frozen stuff in a dump trailer problem a couple weeks ago, too! Taking moving trash to the dump in my friend's dump trailer. I had been sorting and throwing stuff in the "trash trailer" as we were moving out, for a few weeks. Of course, it got rained on several times. I took it to the dump on like the first really cold day after Thanksgiving, and it wouldn't dump because it was frozen to the bed and frozen together. The guy with the payloader saw my issue, because this is apparently a common thing. He had me pull forward really slowly and he followed the stuff down with the payloader bucket. Got it all but a couple towels that were REALLY stuck to the bottom.

My grandmother lost one of the oak trees in her yard that shaded the patio. A neighbor with a large John Deere excavator dug up a /tree slightly larger than yours and we moved it on his heavy equipment trailer to the house where we replanted it. That was 50 years ago and that tree still shades that patio to this day. It is possible to move a large tree with the right equipment and a lot of TLC post replanting. I think if you really hate the idea of cutting the tree down, you might consider trying to move it. The worst that can happen is you have to cut it up later.

Do you remember a project at my house where you dug out some dirt and plants next to my garage and loaded it into my little trailer? Well that also froze into a giant ice ball that took me over 3 hours to remove by hand I had no assistant at that time. It's progressing wonderfully so far. Merry Christmas to all and Hot Chocolate too. 🎅🤶

Oaks can be moved even if they are full grown. Sea Island Company moved full grown oaks when they built their new horse stables on St. Simons Island, Georgia. The oaks were moved in on 18 wheel trucks and replanted. They are now doing well. Your tree should be very easily done considering its size. Your tree is child's play compared to the ones that they transplanted.

Tim, instead of digging out all of the topsoil, dig a series of shallow trenches through the topsoil and fill them with compacted sand or gravel. Spacing could be on 4 or 5 foot centers with a width of ~18 inches. Then fill them with compacted gravel or sand. This will allow the slab to bridge from filled trench to filled trench. Assuming you reinforced the slab this should be no issue since this is office space with no heavy equipment loads. It will be labor intensive but it seems like you guys always look for excuses to your equipment so it should be perfect.

I know it is going to be expensive. I really think now is the time to dig out the topsoil. Then fill with good dirt before the concrete. You would hate to have movement later because of settling on bad soil. That's the way "Dirt Perfect and Letsdig 18" would do it.

Regardless of its size every trailer has a weigh limit. Depending on the material loaded, you can exceed that weigh limit and possibly damage the trailer. Of course that is irrelevant when the dump hydraulics are not connected on the trailer as in this case. It would not dump if empty.

A 6x10 dump trailer is agree. But a trailer of this size and volume, can't expect it considering the weight of wet soil.
