Nicely done. 40 years ago, I cut my teeth tying the Little Trout Series. I couldn't begin to count the number of trout I've caught on this fly pattern. Couple of comments, constructive. Here's the recipe according to the late Col. Joe Bates, thought to be THE expert historian on streamers and much old school fly fishing Lore and Factoids: Hook: size: 2-12, 6x long Head: Black Tail: A very small bunch of bright green bucktail, under or over which is a section cut from bright red floss, both slightly longer then the gap of the hook. Body: Wound with cream coloured spun fur Ribbing: Narrow flat silver tinsel Throat: A small bunch of bright orange bucktail, the same length as the tail. Wing: Of four very small separated bunches of hair, extending slightly beyond the tail. A very small bunch of white bucktail over which is a very small bunch of bright orange bucktail, slightly blended. Over this is a very small bunch of bright green bucktail, topped with a very small bunch of barred badger hair Cheeks: Jungle Cock •Jungle Cock is totally optional, imho. •Also, Badger hair? I dunno, but I have always used Nat Gray Squirrel tail. Again, imo, the dark back (or "top wing") is essential to the fish catching ability of the fly. •The taper of the body should be such that the forward part of the body is thicker than the rear. I've seen it both ways, but prefer the aforementioned, just looks more natural to me. •AGAIN, not slamming ya here (cause you're a fine tyer and a hell of a caster) but I find the "wrapping over the material, covering it with thread" at each tie in of the wings, is unnecessary and adds to making for a large head. Tiny heads (everyone needs a little head now and then) are the benchmark of a nicely tied bucktail/streamer. I like to tie each bundle in with 3-4 turns of thread (I also cut the bucktail to length BEFORE I tie it in, makes for a very clean tie in. IF YOU'RE using squirrel, and I do it on any bucktail-ish fly, is to touch the butts of the wing fibers with a dab of my favorite head cement (Sally Hansen's Hard As Nails) or Zap a Gap (although I don't like cyanoacrylate on trout flies) BEFORE over wrapping all with thread and forming the head. •While the original calls for flat, I very much prefer oval for this series. I LOVE this stuff for ribbing dubbed bodies: Lagartun Varnished French Oval Tinsel, Medium, Gold for all 3 patterns. •And FINALLY (OMG does this guy EVER shut up?) I have a pet heresy that I love to dispel: When stacking hair: 1. Choose the bucktail from the middle of the tail (and as you mentioned, the stuff at the base of the tail is a bit to hollow and it WILL flare, which we do NOT like). Pull out the short fibers from the long and hand align tips. GREAT idea to square of the butts before loading into the flared end of the stacker EXCEPT: It's such a time waster to have to get those tips into that dang stacker. Like herding cats. A better way, at least I think so, is to, once you've square off those butts, put the hair into the stacker BUTTS first into the NON flared end. Try it sometime. Other than that, GREAT job. I really enjoy watching your videos. Very professional, clean, and concise. Cheers.

I like this fly. I am not a big fan of Buck Tails or Streams but I want to get into fishing some of these types of flies. Thank you for sharing your skills with this video. Good luck.

Awesome Shawn. Those classic Bucktails are what I and many others started tying or used for fishing streamers. There's a series of juvenile trout bucktails by Sam Slaymaker called the Little Trout series. The brown, brook and rainbow. As you can see they're as deadly now as they were when tyed in the late 50's. The hook you describe as a 12 or 14 may be a Mustad 6X 3665 which has a limerick bend, now retooled as the L87-3665A (7X). I'm pretty sure my older model of mustad is 14 possibly a 16. If you enjoy fly history Mike Valla has a few books out on the subject, Tying and Fishing Bucktails is his latest and has 100's of patterns, instruction, materials, etc. Founding Flies and Tying the Founding Flies are two others. The July/August 2017 Eastern Fly Fishing magazine features his streamers in their masters at the bench department and the Little Brook Trout is on the cover. This two part video was great, thanks Shawn 👍😎. Btw, I've had fun tying these "little trout" hair wing streamers using hackle barbs instead of hair for the wings, etc. for tiny fry. Your suggestions on the commando head is very helpful. I agree on slower action rods working well with those heads. Is that what you called that "butter" rod Ben Paul used in a video?

I will try this pattern next spring. ( It's blowing snow outside now.) Fortunately, I have all the materials to make this pattern including 6X and 7X hooks. Thanks for the good tip.

Cool fly! Well done sir. I have been tying a lot of bucktail type streamers recently. Tied some last nice for crappie and panfish. They are about as long as a nickel is wide. Bucktail streamer flies just look nice and they catch fish. Thanks for the video!

The hook appears to be a Mustad 3665A. Excellent hook for streamers. Limerick bend. Used for Rangeley Streamers. I have several dozen boxes of all sizes from 2 to 18.

I like the idea of trout fry flies, brook, rainbow, brown, cutthroat. The larger trout certainly are piscivorous (how 'bout that word!). OK, watching you tie flies I'm going to take the plunge and give it a try. Think you could do some equipment videos like good beginners vise, basic tools, minimum materials etc? That would be helpful and maybe have wide subscriber appeal?

Most of the time commercial tyers us a Limerick bend because they do, no idea why, I don't like the bend because of the narrow hook gape. The hook you are using here is exactly right and of course the bend most commonly tied on by us commonly common tyers! 😁 You could probably get away with a less dense wing but I would keep a couple of lighter dressed streamers as well as heavier dressed just because you need more flies in your fly box!!!
@McFlyAngler5 жыл бұрын
For sure. This wasn’t my best tie, but it sure caught tons of fish.

Looks good I wonder if I up the size and use olive black and white if bass will eat it.. thanks for another great idea to tie!
@McFlyAngler7 жыл бұрын
+Joseph Milazzo I think bass will. What about a shad coloration. I see this working well for shad spawns. Bass will eat it up then!
@GodfatherAstro7 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a good idea! Thx.
@McFlyAngler7 жыл бұрын
+Joseph Milazzo I might not even up the size, maybe just a bigger hook. Bass will eat small fish. Those shad spawns have many different sized fish all together and I think bass just look for the easiest pray, they aren't too concerned with size.

Well that settles it that will be a trip to fly fishing store this weekend :) Any tips on explaining to the wife why i keep showing up with more feathers and hooks LOL. On a serious note thanks for all your feedback. I am just starting out and it is overwhelming all the different feathers and buck tail and dubbing. That fact that you list the materials in the description is a huge help. This Fly fishing journey is awesome though makes it all worth it when you land a fish on something you made. Cheers bud!
@McFlyAngler7 жыл бұрын
+Joseph Milazzo I would take a picture of some platinum grade capes, they are $100+, then show her the $5 bucktail you are buying and say, I decided to just get this instead of spend $100 on tying a new fly. Lol

@McFlyAngler7 жыл бұрын
Good question. I don't know of any up your way... However there might be some online shops you could search for them. I would just try tying it yourself man. You don't need an expensive vice for this fly. get a cheap one. In fact, there is a fly shop online I saw a simple vice for $6. Could work.

tried 8 different flies over 2 hours in 6 spots. put this on nervously but 2nd cast in ''boom'' fish on. theres been so little fish lately where i live and if they're there, they dont' bite. those fu**ers. lol. but this works great. the part where it stays level is true, which brings up slow realism. Maybe thats what they like about it... nevertheless thank u so much, i needed to catch something after the season ive been having, believe me. lol thnx mc
@McFlyAngler7 жыл бұрын
Glad it worked for you! :) This is exactly what happened when fishing this fly before for me. I was fishing every fly in my box. I had a few takes, but not good numbers. Then I put this one on and it was like every few casts I was getting bites. Hard bites too, they were practically jumping out of the water for it! I notice this fly works best in slow water, like lakes or deep slow pools. Thats where I have my most success.
@vastsin63957 жыл бұрын
thnx ill try it more for those conditions dude.!!!
