In today's video I show you a recipe for this traditional Dutch/Belgian treat that we eat for New Year's Eve (and before): Oliebollen! It's a fried kind of beignet/donut style ball filled with raisins and topped with powdered sugar. It's such a delicious treat and I really love having it every year. In December they have stalls in pretty much every city in the Netherlands where they sell them and lot's of the time they are vegan as well so yay! Here's my recipe so you guys can try them too!
For this recipe (makes 13) you will need:
320gr all purpose flour
7gr instant yeast
pinch of salt
300ml vegan milk (I used soy milk)
50gr melted vegan butter (about 3 tbsp)
2tbsp sugar
120gr raisins
Oil for frying
To make this soak the raisins in some hot water first for about 10 minutes so they can soften. In the meantime add the rest of the ingredients in a bowl and mix until a dough forms (just mix with a spoon, the dough is too sticky to mix with your hands). Since I'm using instant yeast I don't have to activate it anymore and can just add it in with the flour. Once the raisins have soaked, drain them and add them to the dough. Mix again with a spoon. Cover the bowl with a towel and let the dough rise for 1 hour until doubled in size.
For the frying, heat up some oil in a pan to 180 degrees Celsius (356F). I don't own a thermometer myself so I test if the oil is hot enough for frying by adding a little bit of the dough in the oil. If bubbles start to form around the dough and it quickly rises to the surface, the oil is hot enough. To fry the donuts scoop even sized balls from the dough (I used an icecream scoop) and carefully drop them in the oil. Fry them for 5-8 minutes until golden brown. I fried mine in batches of about 3 at a time. Once the Oliebollen are done, let them leak out on a kitchen paper towel. Lastly top them with powdered sugar and enjoy!! If you want you could also add some apple to the oliebollen (just cut them into small pieces and add to the dough before frying) which is really good as well!
