You are right about the flavor and aroma of this dish. I made it and the family was at the dinner table before it came out of the oven. Thanks for the upload.

I've never heard of this before. I looked it up and it's been around a loooong time - it's considered to be a variant of Patinam ex lacte documented by Apicius. Thanks for sharing a delicious (and historical) dish from SA!

Bobotie, as the name says, came to the Cape with the "exiles" from Batavia. It is a typical Cape Malay dish, one of many we should thank the inventors of Afrikaans for. Afrikaans first became a written language in Bo-Kaap, in the Arabic alphabet.

😅I keep on catching that "throw in"words which, in Afrikaans, is "gooi in"...to put in..to pour in..to add in...my daughter is fluent in English but o boy..that throw in always shines through. Like .."klim in die bed"..climb into bed..literally translated.. NO NO!..In English it is GET into bed! But because there is no other word available in Afrikaans..it is stuck and will probably stay "climb into bed" unless you really click..which I have..fortunately..having an English Grandmother and I am born and bred Afrikaans! 😂

Skip the carrots. That's not traditional. Add tomato paste and slivered almonds.
