I have the older Cube Stereo 160mm and put a coil shock on to improve back end. I also put on a longer stem to improve reach. Still has high standover and short wheelbase keeping it AM rather than enduro. Very light as an Alu and trouble free..

See my comments in reply elsewhere in this thread as I felt the same as you about the rear end. I was attracted to the Cube's because of the short reach that their frames have, but found the rear suspension somehow frustrating and I never really managed to get mine set up correctly despite plenty of advice. I know you discussed the two different sort of people that would go shop or direct but I think one of the main reasons for me and a lot of riders is the finance aspect. Neither I or most of my friends can afford to straight up buy a bike and tend to go shop bought as they have the option of spreading the cost over a few years. If the direct sales company's offered this then I would be more inclined to go that route.

I sold the Spectral, the RM is SO much better, almost no pedal strikes, extremely comfortable seat, etc. 170 VS 175, RM climbs so much better on steeper hills. With the $$$$ i saved i bought some XA carbon wheels, sold the unused stock wheels and RF 800 carbon bars

Good spread of bikes a lot of people are interested in. Couldn't correlate a few comments however... The Sensor having a 'high BB' - it's no higher than the Genius, that is compromised by also being able to run as a 27.5+ (in the stratospheric 'high' postion). Also missed an aspect of the Sensors connection to the Force, being that you can run a 185x55 shock (185x50 stock) on the Sensor if you desire a bit more rear wheel travel without the weight penalty of the all alloy Force 29'er. The Whyte fork comments re: the Pike, is the same chassis as that in the Sensor, uses the same Charger 2 damper (as with a Lyrik) and Debonair air spring (Revelation/Pike/Yari/Lyrik), I'd be looking at setup or a manufacturing issue if the same fork behaved notably different on the 2 bikes in-test, and from experience, even the older Pike with Charger (1) dmaper is a better fork than the likes of the Fox34 on the Genius... The Stereo 150 is really an Enduro machine - if you're calling this a trail bike, then we need the likes of the Trek Slash & Reign 29'er in-test. Would've liked to see a Norco Optic in the mix too... Looking forward to Part 2 (where the Reactor should have been ;) )
@MBRmagazine4 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed it. To respond to your questions, the BB height on the GT is 4mm higher than the Scott (as measured in low positions), but the Scott has more travel (150mm F&R vs 140/130mm F&R on the GT) so given the same sag percentage, the dynamic BB height difference will grow. On the point about the fork, the GT has a Fox 36 fork on the model we tested, not a RockShox. On the Cube, yes, you could classify the Stereo 150 as an enduro bike on travel (although rear travel is same as the Scott) but in terms of geometry, it is actually the shortest and steepest bike on test. Although Nukeproof is a CRC brand, it is sold in dealers. We know a local one that sold six in the last week. Hope that clears a few things up.

@Pesmog4 жыл бұрын
I have owned two Cube Stereos and was never totally happy with the rear suspension on either. When I changed to a Whyte there was a noticeable improvement and it felt more consistent / mature. I think it maybe geometry and not the dampers though, as I have ridden a couple of dozen full suspension mtb's, and have always much preferred those with a horizontal rear damper rather than a vertical one.
@josh3004 жыл бұрын
Pike and Lyrik share the same damper... What are you talking about? There is a difference if using the charger 2.0 or 2.1, but apart from flex (different chasis) you can make them feel almost identical. Until around 2015 most enduro bikes came Pike spected. They worked just fine back then..

I wonder if reviews wouldn't be much more useful to the average consumer if there was a much smaller emphasis on wheelsize or even components in general. Ofcourse all bikes with the same wheelsize will share a few characteristics but there's so much more to a bike holding speed well in certain conditions or being nimble or poppy with certain rider-input that you might as well divide them into 'moods'. Picking a bike based on wheel size doesn't make much sense when riders haven't experienced both. Even most magazines and companies will advertise their 29'ers as 'playful like a 27,5' or a 27, 5 'composed like a 29'er'. Imagine how you would characterize your experience riding a bike when you had absolutely no idea about its components or even the frame. You could try to break it down into component categories, but what if we broke down the experience in terms of interaction with the bike, the trail, etc - what input gets rewarded with what, etc. Similar to describing a person you spent some time with. It's so different when you focus on stats (length, gender, age, IQ, occupation, whatever) from when you focus on what the experience was like. Similarly, when describing your room, listing its furniture will lead to a very different imagination than when describing its atmosphere and use. I imagine it might even lead to viewers better knowing which reviewer to identify with and understanding what to expect from the bikes themselves. But I might also just be high from imagining myself riding all these awesome bikes :).

That is literally one of the reasons we split the test into two parts, and we even talk about it at the start of the video. People can make up their own minds whether they want to save cash up front, or pay for that one-to-one service. And you cannot generalise about pre or post-sales service - some peope have had great service from a direct sales brand and shoddy service from a shop. Equally there will be people who have experienced the reverse, and everyone's experience will be slightly different.

You should do one on hard tail trail bikes not just full suspension trail bikes

We do a Hardtail of the Year test as well, but due to COVID-19, hardtails have almost completely sold out, so we're postponing it.

No Canyon Spectral or YT Jeffsy in the 2020 line up? I guess they have pulled back advertising in MBR..LOL
@MBRmagazine4 жыл бұрын
lolz. They're both direct-sales brands, so they're in part 2 of the test.

I take it you didn’t include the Ibis Ripley V4 because it just wouldn’t be fair. Obviously nothing compares to Ibis in any class. So this is just a second place comparison really.

Bike store bikes are for doctors and lawyers who don't know much about mountain biking. Direct sales and second-hand are for the rest of us!

The Canadian's random upward inflection is unbearable.
@EnglertRacing964 жыл бұрын
@Phillip1310 yes, Canadians are notorious for making a statement sound like a question by emphasizing the end of a sentence or tacking on an "aye?". However this guy appears to doing it randomly.

Shop bought means you trade a bit of spec for advice, ability to try multiple bikes, have it set up for you and get support with servicing and warranty when you need it. Value depends on how much you value the advice and aftercare as explained in this video.
@pjsanab4 жыл бұрын
gazmo147 nope. Local shops don’t have any demo’s. They have a 3 to 4 week wait list to service the bike. They’re snobs that can’t ride at all. I have learned to do my own repairs, and go out to events like Outerbike to be able to demo multiple bikes back to back.

Please please coach Alan to stop talking like a cali teenage girl... where... Literally... Everything he says... is a question. He has some great observations, but listening to him voice them is incredibly irritating... Which is a real shame.

Yep, that high pitch finish to nearly every sentence is killer! Shame, the info he gives out is very good...if only I could concentrate on it!

Thank you for not including 27.5, clearly the industry and riders are moving on from tweener bikes, despite some holdouts.
@Jay-jn3sl4 жыл бұрын
27.5 is perfect for flicking around. Not everyone likes big wheels, especially short people.
