This technique is great! Simple, easy, and effective. I was amazed at how well it worked. I purchased a used 5th wheel and found that the grey water tank was leaking. Did some exploring and found that the tank had cracked in two places- one crack was about 8" long, the other about 2". The cracks had been repaired before with some sort of rubberized material and a tape covering (not flex seal, but something else.) Cleaned that all off with acetone then followed the instructions on this vid and PRESTO! Solid tank once again!

It's basically been raining since I moved in in January, so that puddle didn't raise any red flags for me. Great video and I thank you because I know one of my tanks I have at least two pipes going into which would be a nightmare to repair like you did in your other one where you missed the vent pipe. I have a keystone cougar with leaks just above the outlet pipes on two tanks due to extremely substandard support system that some brain dead engineer came up with. Your method worked awesome as it turned out my tanks were ABS I assume because the stuff doesn't peel off like someone else said in this thread I got lucky and mine was actually ABS obviously so this worked. The problem, was the acetone settled in this low spot were my leaks are and even after the repair continued to eat away at the plastic causing the entire area to be super soft and flexible as basically there's acid sitting on top of it trying to eat through. My advice to people using your method if the leak is in a low spot, is to do the initial repair then after a few hours put at least 5 gallons of water through, and repeat the process without drilling just add additional patch over the top and you should be golden I think I'm going to do it a couple times if it still feels soft I'm on my second application and it's feeling better already after the flush. Following my initial repair, I discovered an additional leak and ,I was actually pinched for time on an Easter Sunday and all the stores were closed So for the second leak I used turpentine and the oatley clear all-purpose cement which appears to work as well in a pinch but I highly recommend your method I had used the medium duty blue can black cement originally which worked great but if they make a heavy duty I think I'd go that route just because if I could find it and if it exists.

Getting started was the hard part. Easy once started, gotta get your mind right. Couple things I discovered, my RV dealer said my black water tank was HDPE black. I was skeptical as 3 mechanics did not know. I contacted Keystone the RV mfd, they looked up part no. And said ABS. ABS IS EASIER to repair w adhesive. I took a piece of screen and ABS adhesive and tested a remote spot on tank and it stuck. I tested on a HDPE barell and dry it peeled right off. Cost little for small can of adhesive to be sure. I did wear disposable blue nitrile gloves, great help pressing fiber glass tape into wet glue. The mesh drywall tape is fiberglass screen w tack adhesive, worked well for me, I put 2 layers at right angles 6 hours apart. My split in tank was 1/2 inch away from 3” drop pipe, 3/4 way around, crack was wide open, maybe 1/4 inch until I fixes cause. End flange short direction 21 “ was not supported at all, in July heat, tank sagged, putting weight of tank onto well supported 3” drop pipe, rotation split tank, weak zone. I cut a 21” angle iron brace , to support short end of tank b4 I started adhesive repair. When pressed in place, it raised tank middle sag, closing crack in tank to near nothing. It will stay there. I am dissatisfied with original engineering on tank install, and lack of tank belly supports. I think we as RV buyers should expect better , thicker tanks, with lifetime replacement repairs, or keep walking. 1000 $ quote and 3 month backlogs by dealer is unacceptable. Nothing to prevent from happening next year if I had a new one installed by dealer. My advise, fix cause of split, before you patch - repair your tank.

This is the exact scenario I have with my keystone. Both tanks (the big ones) are somewhat supported with angle iron but on the Sharp edge not on the flat!!! That's where I would expect a leak actually, since all that weight is basically sitting on a dull knife blade!!! But my leaks and cracks were just past the outlet pipe on the tanks. This seems to have worked that I think all the acetone that doesn't drain out of the tank continues to eat away so I'm now flushing and going to do a couple more treatments because it's super soft and flexible to the touch. I'm going to get some bed frame iron since it's the same size and square off the supports and add additional two assist in the slope as no matter what elevation I set the legs on my trailer It seems there is always going to be water in my tank no matter what I do the way it's currently set up pretty sad these guys have been doing this way too long to have not figured this out I agree with you that it's not right as RV buyers to have to deal with that engineering.

I would have worn latex gloves and used the syringe plunger to draw the stuff up in to the plunger. Much neater. My leak is right at the seam of the outlet tube so I'm going to have to figure out a different fix but this is great for a fix on the horizontal plane. Thanks.

I had leaks on two tanks just like you and it still worked I just think I'm going to reapply a couple times and let it dry in between, I think the acetone has been sitting at that low point in my tank still wanting to eat away at the plastic maybe a good flush, let it dry out then try again I'm thinking.

Great video however, not all tanks are ABS, many tanks are actually PVC !! ( the tank on my motor home is PVC ) one quick way to know what type of tank you have on the RV is this, if the trap/gate screws into the tank then chances are you have a PVC tank, if the trap is glued to the tank then it's ABS. This is not a 100% true method of determining the type of plastic used on your tank, but it is a good indication. Best to refer to the manufacture of the RV, call or send them an e-mail and ask them what the tank is made of. Another method that is actually the best way to permanently fix the tank is to plastic weld it.

The black tank on my 2014 mfg date Keystone trailer split. I called dealer and they tell me it is black HDPE. Or polyethylene? Now I am trying to figure out how to fix! I do not trust the answer I got from dealer. (3 service techs did not know) Great video. $ 1000 estimate and 2 months lead time for replacement... next one could split too. I will NEVER BUY another RV trailer w tanks that do not have a life time tank replacement warranty. So means I will likely give up camping or go back to tent camping. Anyone ever used a metal tank? This is awesome, thanks for sharing it. While I will be able to drain my tank as best as the open valve will allow, do you think it's important to have it dry in the area where the crack is inside? If so, how to do that? I was thinking removing the valve body and getting a hairdryer in there, but acetone is pretty hygroscopic, so it may absorb and pull out all the moisture it comes in contact with. Thoughts?
@TrailerDayz

Is there any reason you couldn’t use the Oatey Premium Grade Yellow ABS Cement ?
@TrailerDayz
@TrailerDayz 2 жыл бұрын
Black ABS cement is actually ABS plastic dissolved in solvent so it will permanently bind with and become ABS. Other cements are just glues, which are designed to stick 2 pieces together in a tight fitting pipe bond.

@@TrailerDayz I understand that Black tank is my Blackwater storage tank! What I wish to know is if my Black colored tank is made of Black ABS or Black High Density Polyethylene plastic, to repair the crack will take different chemical adhesives or different filler for the crack if we have to weld. @@billjones5178-if you still dont know, there is a comment above that talks about how fittings are applied to help determine. Said cemented fittings are more likely ABS, screwed fittings are more likely PVC or HDPE. But not absolute. Hope it helps.

My two Sons tell me, Dad, you have a very strange way of fixing things, demolition Dad. Im planning to fix a hole in the black tank of my R.V but Im just gonna clean the area, wet with the resin a thick cloth fiber glass and push in that open crack but having the jack holding pressure until dried out, then place another patch out side over the already fixed surface .. It is just to cover up to stop the stinky climate change venom in the air.
