Love seeing experienced overlanders transitioning back to ground tents. Personally, I think RTT’s have a few benefits, but are mostly show over function. A big time price tag, a large, wind resistant weight on top of your vehicle, climbing up and down a ladder in the middle of the night, inability to stand, and having to do a take-down every time you move your vehicle. The set up time of these hub style tents are a game changer, and I’m very happy I made the move back to one.

As a side note, if anyone is interested in a budget friendly alternative, Gazelle makes a hub style tent very similar. They have both a 4 and 3 man version. So far, held up very well throughout two years of abuse, the YKK zippers have worked perfectly, and the floor is detachable allowing you to sweep out dirt.

I love the simplicity of just throwing a tent on the ground. You can stand inside, there’s no need to haul a roof top tent or tow a trailer, it’s relatively cheap, keeps your roof rack relatively open, you can fit more than 4 people. The more I think about it the more a ground tent makes a lot of sense. If I didn’t have kids, I’d probably get a truck camper if a camper van, but a 4x4 van a roof rack and a bunch of camping gear is very appealing.

Thanks for the review! I have the Gazelle T4 and love it! It is big enough for two XL cots, a side table in between, and plenty of room for storage Setup and breakdown is similar to the ShiftPod. Super fast.

It was between the ShiftPod III and the Gazelle T4 for my family (3+ the dog). As much as I like the reflective material on the ShiftPod, I realized I didn't need it. I camp in the SoCal desert (basically everywhere you have posted in Azna State Park), and have been using a cheap Coleman 3-man tent for 25+ years but finally decided it was time to get a nicer tent I could stand up in a couple of years ago. We ended up with the Gazelle T4 which as you know sets up and breaks down the same as the ShiftPod, and it has been great! I also liked the price a little better. I hope to see you guys out there sometime.

I have been using my T4 Gazelle now going on four years, its big and bulky. But it is really well made. Want to downsize to the mini Shiftpod or the Gazelle T3. Cannot find them, sold out.

Best tent ever. I have a cot and a lawn chair in there easily as well as my bag. It’s a true 4 season tent and you need your window slightly open as your body temp will warm up the inside, but it’s nice and cool in the hot sun.

For people with a lower budget, look in to the Gazelle T3 or T4. I use the T3, and its great. Especially when wheeling and camping in different spots every day.

Love it !!! The Story Tell Now is one of the best channels out there. The shiftpod mini is pretty cool. I really enjoy my Gazelle T4. Same basic setup. The T4 is a little bit taller. I prefer the T4 over my rtt.

I have portable ice fishing house that sets up the same way, The Eskimo portable is a quilted material and holds the heat in very well and even has a Chimney hole and it’s 10x10

I love my Gazelle T3 and it has this same setup. It has the dimensions that allow me to lay out at 6'2 on a cot. I will warn anyone that gets one of these about the rain fly. If it is raining put it on, if it might rain...Don't. Just keep the fly with you inside so if it does you can drop the roof and put it on. I'm a light sleeper and those desert bugs just loved to crawl around under the fabric making scritching noises.

The bag for the tent is ripping. The shift pod is basically a portable ice fishing house - very common up here in MN. They are insulated to hold heat in the winter. You can get cheap ones for about $300. Admittedly the shiftpod has a floor and bug netting but I I appreciate all your videos but I think these tents are (a) too expensive, (b) bulky, (c) heavy, and frankly not very easy to set up compared to many traditional ground tents. For $300 you could be in an 5 person Alps Taurus Outfitter with aluminum poles. That tent weighs 12lbs, packs down to half the size, is 10x8ft footprint size with a 6ft standing height and can be set up by my 13yr old daughter by herself (admittedly she is 2 merit badges away from Eagle Scout). Anyway - I love that you show all the cool stuff but some of it is not worth the extra spend over traditional stuff. But hey there are other channels for the boring cheap traditional stuff. Thank you always for your great and thoughtful content!

That's an insulated icefishing tent with a floor in it. Literally throw a tarp under an insulated pop-up ice hut and you have the exact same thing. Looks identical to an Eskimo 949i except silver instead of red. Couple hundred bucks at cabelas

This is perfect. I’m in the market for a quick setup tent but for the money, I’m going to give the Coleman dark room instant up tent a go. It is great seeing your setup Brad. These things are sold out/back ordered. Been trying to find one for the past six months. I have the 4 person Gazelle which is similar, but I have a truck with a 6' bed, Gazelle also offers an overlanding package upgrade. A much bigger waterproof storage bag with a ground tarp and heavy duty tent stakes/cordage. The bigger storage bag is worth every penny.

I received the shiftpod mini as a gift from my best friend. This is a great review on it. I will add that you may want to transport and store the tent with the bottom removed. I know it takes away from the convenience and part of the reason you’d want to buy this tent in the first place. The reason you want to do this is because the hub for the poles on the ceiling has exposed metal hoop. The hoop makes contact with the floor when the tent is folded up. After several trips and tossing the tent around the hoop wears down the tent bottom and creates a hole. The tent does come with a patch kit to repair the floor so you can take care of this problem.

For such an expensive tent I can't believe zippers have failed. I made a tipi shifted type tent. Not near the cost, larger but great for heat control. Use 10' poles, 2 big rolls of 25 ' reflectix, a ground tarp.easy, light, and cool.

Looks a lot like the design for an ice fishing pop-up. Those things fly in the wind without an anchor point, and can also collapse from wind if the anchor pop out points aren't anchored.

I’ve been looking at the Igloo ice fishing tents. Very similar but are insulated and very weather proof. They’re larger and taller too. I’m only 5’ 9” so this unit would be ok for me. The cost is not very attractive though. The Igloos are only slightly more and seem to be better in most every way. Nice enough review and lots of the other gear discussed was interesting.

I noticed you mentioned a zipper failure on the bag and another on the Tent but didn't elaborate on the tent zipper failure - with only 30 nights on it, that's a bit surprising! Was it an operator error situation? My backpacking tents are pretty fragile (my 2 man is 2.4lbs - it's a materials compromise!) But for a car-camping tent, did you expect a more robust zipper?

gazelle t4 with a roll of Reynolds wrap is my budget option ;-). Actually my boys and I use the Discobed bunk beds and we can easy sleep 4 in the Gazelle t4 which is very similar in size and construction. Also I can attest to the weather proofness of this style of tent. We had 50 mile an hour winds on a trip and all that happened was one side caved in. Almost as weather proof as our Kodiak Canvas!

This Tent looks like NASA made it. It's really cool. I prefer Quechua tents though. 2 seconds to set up (they pop up like popcorn you just toss them in the air), 15 to collapse, integrated water and windproof fly. They turn in to a wheel shape when collapsed, and they are fairly reasonably priced too. Also, they don't weight a lot for what they offer. I started with a small one-person tent for backpacking, and later upgraded to a bigger one. Highly recommended.

You'd use that rainfly if you lived in Oregon! LOL! I have the Shiftpod Mini, but haven't used it yet ... I also have a Gazelle which I love. I'm thinking of using the Shiftpod as a "privacy" tent for my teardrop trailer. It should be great for that!
