Do I like my Ford Bronco better than my Jeep Wrangler? That’s one question that I get asked a lot. In this episode of TrailRecon, I’ll share with you all the things that I like and don’t like about my Ford Bronco and what I have in store for the future.
Since getting my Bronco Badlands edition with the Sasquatch package a few months ago, I’ve put a lot of miles on it and really put it to the test. I’ve taken it on a long road trip to Texas, I’ve been on a few overlanding trips to the desert, and I pushed it pretty hard on some difficult off-road trails.
Along the way, I’ve gotten to know this Bronco really well and I share my thoughts and criticisms in this video about the things I think Ford could have done better, including the bumper and soft top, some technical glitches I’ve come across, and some design features that just aren’t working for me. I’ve also discovered some things I really love about the Bronco including the ride comfort, the layout and design of some of the interior features, and the power of the engine.
I’m ready to start making some modifications to my Bronco now that I’ve gotten a feel for its capability in stock form and I'll tell you about the changes that are coming soon to make it even more off-road capable.
Overall, I’m pretty happy with how the Bronco performs even if it does have a few limitations. I came close to not getting it, but I’m so glad I did because I’m enjoying it way more than I thought I would. But...do I love it more than my Jeep?
Come along for the ride with us on this episode and find out!

I love your honesty, you call it as you see it. some get butt hurt when they hear negative things about vehicle they drive. no vehicle is perfect and there's always tradeoffs, most of it depends on how much of off-road vehicle you want vs daily driver. wrangler delivers unmatched off-road ability while sacrificing on road manners, crash and roller safety. best part I like about bronco is that it brings needed competition to wrangler. jeep should build a more refined and safer version of wrangler sell beside current jl.

So in your mind, You want JEEP to build a longer wheel base Wrangler so it's safer on the HIGHWAY? They do it's called the Grand Cherokee. The Wrangler was never designed to be anything but an OFF ROAD vehicle. It cracks me up when people criticize the Wrangler for it's short wheel base. It's like complaining about buying a Z06 and wondering why you only get 18 mph.

The trail markers are awesome. They are not just a tie down point or for branches (So-Cal has a ton of mountain trails), they are to help mark the corners of the vehicle while off roading when you are going too fast for 360 camera. There is also a TON of cool aftermarket parts for it now (I know my comment is 2 years after you made the video) they can be turned into running lights/parking lights amber or white. There is a delete kit. Change the colors. Antenna or go-pro mounts.

We had a 2010 Jeep JKU that we traded for a mid-size SUV when we became parents, but one supposedly off-road CUV (with a CVT nonetheless), then lifted wagon, and now a mid-size pickup later, I’m definitely getting back into solid axles front and rear again within the next 2-3 years. I thought that maybe the 4Runner or new Bronco would be the answer-and as capable as this new Bronco is, it’s back to a Wrangler or Gladiator for me.

@sneakypete187 out of the 8 vehicles between my wife and I since 2015, we have tried to get some of the capabilities back that the Wrangler possessed with the following: ‘15 Honda Pilot AWD and ‘20 Subaru Forester Sport. The Pilot was actually surprisingly capable off road with A/T tires. The Forester is great as a ski trip car, but anything beyond some of the AWD designated roads that you would find in National or State Parks and it’s out of its element despite what people show on social media.

I can't believe people are actually paying $90k, $70k, even $50k for the Bronco. I just got back from looking at them and was hyped...until I got into it. They are cramped, plastic everywhere and the driver door felt so cheap when closing it. This thing just looks and feels so cheap everywhere you look. It makes my 2014 base model Edge feel like a premium luxury vehicle. It got worse. I literally laughed out loud when they told me the BASE Bronco with aftermarket lift kit and big tires they had done, was going for $78k after markup. Another local dealer wants $61k for a base model. You can get a two year old Range Rover for what dealers want for a Bronco right now lol. What a joke. Glad you like yours though.

Fair assessment. I’m a lifelong Ford guy, Ford blue in my veins. The issues with the tops on the Bronco have kept me from jumping in. Well, and the price. Ford missed the mark badly with the marketing. WTH decided it would be a good idea to use the same name for two different vehicles? It’s amazing how many people think the weenie “Bronco Sport” (re-branded Escape) and the Bronco are the same. This will bite Ford in the a$$ hard when the turbo Karen’s try to “off-road” in their Bronescapecos and get on Facebook complaining about how fragile they are.

I think that it's even in competition says a lot for what Ford did. It's also very often a lot of serious offroaders who like their jeeps over it too, and they show a shot of their jeep and they have 40 inch wheels and 50k of mods and lifts on the thing. Yeah no kidding it isn't doing that, and of course it doesn't have the range of mods that the jeep does, but for those of us who don't want to mod so heavily, at least not yet, it's the best performer I can see on paper from an OEM purchase. I just can't wait to get mine.

@@breaddrinker Jeep also offers 35s from the factory, so I’m not sure if it’s fair to say the bronco is the most capable stock vehicle... solid axles just offer a level of reliability and capability on the trail that ifs just can’t reach. I think it's perfect for me. I was really dragging my heels over a 4runner purchase. Just so much old and sensible for such a lot of money, while also being somewhat lackluster offroad compared to the heavy hitters. The Jeep, has that slightly awkward fit to a family. The comfort and reliability isn't quite enough for me to throw such funds at it and justify it as a sensible purchase. Landrover.. Twice as much money, and even more unreliable. Great on road, but if we're being honest, it's really only meant for on road now. I was even holding out for the Ineos Grenadier until the Bronco wooed me. The Bronco fits right between and in the Jeep and 4runner pile, with all the modern tech of the Landrover, without the reliability issues. I too went with the big options, and it maxes out around 62k. I think it's a bargain, and a very clever, well thought out inclusion that's scared all of the competing manufacturers. It won me over after all, and I started from a place of complete skepticism. I also once owned a Ford, and wasn't planning on ever going back, but.. I see what they've done, and i see what they're offering here. The oil filters on top of the engine bay.. Accessible plugs.. I think they have listened well and are being rewarded with a runaway success and a giant backlog of orders to fill. I'm still waiting on my order. Effectively the same as yours. I thought long and hard on adaptive, and still decided to keep it. I also kept the hardtop, because or some of the issues you've encountered. I don't think I'll be removing it much. I'm starting to see promises of reliable ACC bumpers spring up. There's one or two videos now and some interesting takes on low slung hidden winches. If Toyota wants to lure me back with it's updated 4runner, I am still listening, but.. I don't know. It would have to be very surprising at this point.

I hear you on the 4Runner. I have a 5th gen, it makes for a good daily driver and I bought it before the Bronco was a thing and the used car market went insane. I bought it in 2019 when it was 6 years old and it's actually worth a little more than what it was then, haha. So I think I got a good deal on it, and it was an excellent value. Going out and buying a new one today, no I couldn't justify spending that much money on one, because it IS old tech. It is proven though, and they do last forever. I've put 50,000 miles on mine in 3 years and have had zero mechanical issues. I think for the next generation 4Runner, Toyota could have a hit if all they did was copy the Bronco feature for feature, with Toyota reliability and a fixed steel roof. That would be my ideal vehicle. Of course, no matter what Toyota does with the 4Runner, the fanboys will still buy them. Literally the only way they can destroy it is to go unibody with it.

I want to mention I sold the wobbly wrangler with 12 MPG and bought a new 2023 gladiator eco diesel at 32 MPG for HWY use only! People, if you want to save money the Bronco is the way to go + it has so much more to offer, it’s great right out of the box!!

I am disappointed in fords decision to go with a 2.7l engine. I’d be more impressed if they decided to allow people to choose a 5.0 motor. Bronco tradition is to have a big thirsty and loud motor

Pretty impressive for the first run. Hero has been building wranglers since before I was born. I’m thinking with enough time and continued interest in the bronco that Ford will continue to dial it in. 👍

I drive a 2018 JLUR on a 4" lift and 38's. I'm looking forward to getting out on the trails with some Broncos so we can swap opinions on the pros and cons of each. I appreciate anything that can wheel off-road, and in my opinion, the 4door Ford Bronco with a hard top would be a great daily driver and weekend warrior for easy-moderate trails, however, I would personally still prefer my solid front axle and huge aftermarket support in my Wrangler for aggressive off-road adventures on rocky trails and severe off-camber twisted trails like we find in WindRock TN, Hawks Pride AL, and such. I think the Bronco will behave better on-road than my jeep, but not as well as my wife's Hemi Grand Cherokee WK2 TrailHawk. That's how we got the best of both worlds in my garage at least.

I agree. I think the Bronco is more in the realm of a Cherokee Trailhawk. And I would take a Grand Cherokee any day over a Bronco.

@@bryanrogowski I’ve had two GC Hemi Trailhawks, and you can’t put 35’s or 37’s on them easily…or at all. Solid rear axle on bronco is off road plus, and more travel from front IFS on bronco than GC has its advantage too. I’d put bronco ahead of GC on off road capabilities but behind wrangler.

The soft top looks a bit janky. The Bronco would look good with a color-matched hardtop. Addictive Desert Design bumpers have sensor-friendly options. After going out 4 wheeling, especially on longer trips, you should check the bolts under the vehicle, and with all the flexing going on trail riding as you mentioned maybe even check things under the hood.....hoses, wire connections, etc.

Great video, as always. I also have a Badlands Sasquatch, so I’m excited to see what you have in store for the Bronco. Regarding the back, I recommend the IAG EZ-Lift. I added it to my soft top and I now I can open the back with one hand (one latch at a time) and it automatically lifts open (higher than the prop rod would give you). I also added struts to my hood - another great addition that skips the prop rod and adds ease and convenience.

The IAG struts for the soft top are a must... I am not too bothered by the soft top and got it to get it sooner too, but I think I would reorder with a hard top just because of the trunk space. I don't even mind the wavy back window, but coming from a van I hated bending down to access the trunk. But those struts made the soft top usable and it will be perfect since summer is coming!!! Highly recommend them to eliminate one issue and it is only a $100 mod.

I'm loving my badlands. I agree with the soft top back hatch. I think they may of adjusted the soft top for the 22s because I really have to pull on it to get my hand under it and it doesn't flop around under heavy winds. Haven't had the chance to really fold it back so maybe it gets loose or stretches.

I've been waiting nearly two years for my Bronco. I opted for the hardtop and Ford "paused" the production of the hardtop for awhile. Hopefully that gets resolved soon. I hate to say it but Brad, we got the exact same Bronco. I am going to delete the Lux package and go with vinyl seats. I chose the blue that they discontinued so I went with Red. But, oh well, we will probably never wheel in the desert at the same time. Anyway, great video. Thanks for your opinion.

Larry, just wanted to point out that I got my BL 2.7 with SQ and Lux and I absolutely love the Liz package. I have the vinyl seats too. I got the velocity blue with only the soft top. Originally ordered the dual top but was told it was holding up production so I went down to the dealer and switched it to soft top only (they had changed it to hard top only!!!?) and 3 days later I got my VIN #. Good luck getting yours. I’m absolutely loving mine.

@@larrybriggs2920 unfortunately no I don’t. I originally heard hard tops won’t be available for separate purchase until ‘23 so that’s what my head is set on. Thanks for all the great videos! The top has shifted forward then causing the closing issue and sides to be loose, If you completely remove the top you can shift the brackets rearward to correct the problem on soft top. I have your identical bronco with lux package in Race red and I have the ford installed winch and it dose work with the adaptive cruise control.. Not crazy about camera being blocked though!

You are the best. I have an identical Bronco except I have Area 51. Two things that cancel your dislikes. IAG performance has a set of 4 grab handles in 17 colors and soft top struts. Both items work well. I am not a huge fan of the soft top. The one company that is making a hard top charges $7,000.00 including delivery. That is very expensive.

I’ve owned an early Bronco (1977), and I’ve owned Jeeps. I’ve always had a special place in my heart for Broncos. When I heard they were bringing it back I was excited. After they finally arrived, I’m kinda like “meh”. I’d still rather have the Jeep any day of the week. The Bronco is nice, but at the same time, a little disappointing to me.

Maybe you could go with a receiver hitch style winch, that way you could store it away when on the highway. It's nice to be able to move it to the back if you drive off into something forward and need to pull it out backwards. Thanks for the review. I had a job restoring the 66 to 77 broncos. They still drove terribly on the highway. Glad that's improved.

I have a Badlands 2.7 and agree with your assessments; but I got that hard top - just can't do a soft top. Regarding the aftermarket... I think in a more "normal" time we'd have more options already available and out competing.. but with Covid and Ford production delays and international supply chains being wonky - it's just thrown a wrench into everything. I'm sure it'll catch up; it is, however, unfortunate. Now I didn't get LUX package so I'm personally not concerned with the electronics package up there but even most of the winch solutions don't even take into consideration the front camera; which is one of the primary features of the Bronco so that's annoying. Anyway I'm interested to see what you do for lights.... I'm in Phoenix area and typically drive in fairly similar terrain as you do therefore I'm looking to see what options you go with, at what height level, and how you intermix ambers with whites. I know there are some good kits that fit into those bumper side openings but those are also pretty low and like LiteBright for instance just removed those lower sides of the front bumper for better approach and clearance... which effectively nullifies that location for lighting. So... I'm interested to see what you go with. And thanks always for the content sir!

Hmm, there are a TON of lift options out there, so not sure how you're unsure of that. A few companies make delete kits for those load points up front on top of the fenders, easy install. Check out JCR's winch plate with ADD's ACC relocate bracket to get a winch up front.
