Thank you Stefan for posting all of these videos. I am from the US, but my mom was from holland. My aunt, uncle and cousins live in Groeninghen and my grandparents lived in Doetinchem. My great grandfather worked for the Dutch railway as a driver and when my opa was a boy, he would ride the rails all day and night. He would go from city to city exploring while learning the rail lines and schedules. We would visit Holland almost every year during the spring time and sometimes for the holidays. . My favorite parts of the trip were always the train rides. Coming out of the tunnel from schipol to Amsterdam central , Arnhem and Utrecht. My face would be glued to the window the entire time watching the scenery. I would order a grape cassis and I was truly in heaven. Holland’s rail system is of the most impressive and enjoyable experiences I’ve ever had. I have always wanted and dream about living in Holland. I often dream about doing your job as well. I envy you Stefan, in a positive sense, but I vicariously can live this experience through you thanks to these videos you post of your most beautiful country and railway system. Stefan, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Echt heel erg bedankt. You have helped me reminisce many fond memories with my opa, oma, mother and sister while traveling through Holland. My dream is to make a trip and explore the entire country by rail. That would be a life’s dream come true. I lost my mom dad opa and oma all pretty close together. Now I just have my sister here in the states. I’m 39 years old and single. I have an Associates degree in culinary arts. Stefan, if you are reading this, could you please possibly answer one question for me? What are the possibilities of an American coming to Holland to work for the Dutch railway and I am curious of what type of school you attended, the process you experienced to become a Train Engineer or Driver, and would it be possible for someone like me? Bedankt again. These videos mean a lot to me and add value to my world experience and life. PS your whistling is amazing. You are a pleasant Whistler and it adds to your videos. Much love Stefan. I'm glad to! :D Great to hear you enjoyed your trips in The Netherlands to much. And I'm happy I could take you back to those memories with this video. Always a pleasure to do so. To become a train driver in The Netherlands you must have finished school (MBO niveau 3-4 in our country). You can also take an MBO-3 class (2 years) to be train driver in our country (as off 16 years old). For everyone who has already finished school you must apply directly at NS and then get to an internal school for a year to be a Dutch train driver. You must be speaking Dutch fluently to do so. Ik heb alleen maar buitenlandse schooldiploma's (Britse), maar als ik mijn diploma's waardeer, worden ze gelijk aan een vwo diploma. Als het voor jou niet vervelend is, mag ik je om wat advies vragen? Is het, in mijn geval, het waard om de MBO-3 opleiding te volgen, of is het beter direct bij NS te soliciteren? Moet je voor iets betalen bij de interneopleiding van de NS? Fijne dag! Groetjes.

Dan kun je denk ik beter direct solliciteren bij NS zelf. Gezien je al werkervaring op het spoor hebt is dat mooi meegenomen. Voor NS is het wel belangrijk dat je ook de Nederlandse taal goed beheerst.

Dat motorgeluid van de TRAXX is gewoon geweldig. Ik wil graag machinist worden. Maar voordat ik me comfortabel ermee kan voelen, moet ik eerst mijn Nederlands taalvaardigheden veel verbeteren. Deze cab video's zijn heel ontspannend en interessant. Veel bedankt.

ik was vanmiddag aan het filmen vlakbij de spoorbrug HHwaard,1 trein toeterde,ik had het geluk dat de hefbrug nog even omhoog ging voor een jacht.,mooi gefilmd.heb mijn hero 6 black opnieuw laten instellen,kromme masten zijn weer recht gebogen,lol.

Nice! Haha, is gewoon een knopje voor op je camera hè. 😁 Even bij de instellingen kijken en je kunt zelf je beeld aanpassen naar wat jij fijn vindt. Hoef je niet je hele camera opnieuw voor in te stellen.

Ha Wiebe! Nee die rij ik niet. Dan zou ik moeten solliciteren bij NS Internationaal en rij ik alleen nog Amsterdam - Brussel heen en weer. Zeg nooit nooit, maar nu vind ik mijn huidige takenpakket nog veel te leuk! 😁😁

I had not realised that there was so much raising and lowering of pantographs to switch power so often on the Rotterdam - Schiphol section. Must be annoying.

Hi Julie! Yes... Every time we enter or leave the HSL is a lot of work. Not annoying, but a lot of work indeed. We make it work. ICNG (new train) will do a lot of the work by itself. Looking forward to that!

Hallo meester. Weer een geweldige video. Als de Thalys weer eens vertraging heeft kan de intercity direct dan niet eerst of raken de computers van de 🚆 treinen en verkeersleiding dan van slag. Die Fransen met hun Thalys het zijn zulke prutsers, kunnen die gasten nou helemaal niks 😂

De Thalys wordt gewoon gereden door machinisten van NS Internationaal. 😉😉 En vertraging ligt meestal niet aan de machinist hè? 😂😂 Thalys gaat eerst omdat die 300km/u kan rijden. Als wij eerst zouden gaan zou de vertraging van de Thalys alleen maar meer oplopen. We problemen zoveel mogelijk de vertraging te beperken.

Goed gezien! Daar zou ooit een spoor komen te liggen richting de groothandel van de bloemenexport daar in de omgeving als het goed is. Jammer dat dit nooit is gebeurd.

Staat uitgelegd in de beschrijving onder de video. :) Het gele sein afrijden zou betekenen dat we verderop de rijtoestemming met 15km/u moeten ophalen en langzaam door de sluis zouden rollen. Dat zou alleen maar meer vertraging opleveren. :)

Does your Tablet continually show trains ahead of you? What is "tested" during a Typhoon Test?

1. Yes it constantly gives info about your path ahead (and the trains running in front of you in your path). 2. The high and the low tones of the train horns. 😊

Hey Stefan, weer een leuke film. Deze rit zelf pas 1 keer gedaan. Valt me op dat de tegemoetkomende collega voor en achter met de panto`s tegen de draad de fasescheiding naderd bij Bleiswijk. Of is de achterste lok uitgeschakeld en loopt alleen mee. 1 Traxx kan het hele spul makkelijk trekken. Tot kijks weer.

Ha Piet! Klopt! Bij de fasescheiding hoeven de pantografen niet naar beneden te worden gelaten. Allen de hoogspanning dient te worden afgeschakeld (tractie, airco, batterijlading, compressors etc). Alleen bij de spanningssluizen moeten de pantografen ook worden neergelaten. :)

Overigens geven allebei de los tractie als de machinist hierom vraagt. De achterste geeft iets minder tractie dan de voorste. :)

Hello Stefan, I've seen several of your videos and they are impressive. Also I really like your descriptions of the videos, as they are very detailed and explicative. I have for you a technical question if I'm allowed. On these Traxx-hauled trains, the rear engine is idle or provides power, as if they were in multiple traction (ZDS switch on)? Thanks a lot for your efforts and footage, and looking after your new videos!

The rear one provides power too, when they drive by you can hear both the front and rear engines running

@@fedde7232 Thanks for your answer! I drive also some traxx locos in freight trains and was curious about their use in front-tail formations. I supose cars have been cabled to enable comunication between both engines. That's cool!

Hi Aaron! :D The ZMS-switch makes sure both trains do their work. And in this setting the locomotive in the back gives a little less power than the locomotive in the front. This to make sure the carriages won't be pushed off the tracks. And thank you so much for your compliment! :D

@@MachinistStefan Thanks a lot for your answer, Stefan. The ZMS switch (we call it ZDS) is a well known friend of mine, a lot of times had to switch it on and back for reseting connection between both locos! I thought that for simplicity and enough power, the rear engine could be towed.

Ha Adriaan. Die worden bij nadering van de trein op tijd gesloten doordat ze op afstand een trein kunnen detecteren in het spoor. 😊😊 Zodra de trein op een vast punt rijdt wordt de overweg verderop geactiveerd. Altijd uitgaand van rijden op de hoogst toegestane snelheid.

Hallo Machinist Stefan, wieder ein tolles Video, wieder sehr gute Beschreibung der HSL, mit den verschiedenen Abschnitten der Strecke. Zwischen Rotterdam und Amsterdam. Kurze Frage wenn Sie gestattet ist. Warum sind die Triebwagen der Baureihen DDZ,VIRM und ICM in Yellow und blauw lackiert. Auch die Personenwagen und E-Lok´s der Baureihe E186. Gibt es auch ein Video von Ihnen von Bad Bentheim nach Amsterdam. Oder umgekehrt. Wünsche erstmal schönen Urlaub. Mit freundliche Grüßen aus Nürnberg

Hi Tom! :D Thanks for you comment. I will reply in English if you don't mind. :) The blue and yellow is the original colour for our company. NS is blue and yellow and that's why we paint our trains that way. A really nice sight when we drive through the country side. :D I only drive the domestic trains. 160km/h indeed for the BR 186. Soon ICNG will be delivered and that train will replace the TRAXX on the HSL. Speed will then be upgraded to 200km/h for Intercity Direct.

Dan weet je niet hoe hard je rijdt. Als nood zou je eventueel een GPS-meter op de telefoon aan kunnen zetten om de trein veilig af te rangeren. Maar heel strikt mag dat niet.... Dan zou je portalen moeten tellen. Die staan om de 70 meter ongeveer. Snelle rekensom hoeveel je er moet passeren om de snelheid te berekenen. 😂😂

Dat is een SMB (stop marker board). Deze geven de grens aan tot waar je mag rijden als er een stopopdracht wordt gegeven op de computer van de trein. Op het normale spoor zijn dat zeg maar lichtseinen. Op de HSL krijgen we alle info op de board computer. En als een sein stoptonend is zien we dat dus op het scherm.

When you pulled into Amsterdam Centraal was the train on the left the delayed Thalys which caused you to be late? It also appears the HSL is scheduled to be traversed at maximum speed for a TRAXX so you could not make up much if any time there? {^_^}

Correct! At Amsterdam Central Station the Thalys needs to be made empty to be shunted away after that. Takes some time of course. We entered the HSL with 3.5 minutes delay. There is some spare tien on the HSL for all trains, but in our case there were some other trains delays around Schiphol due to the delayed Thalys. Trains are planned 3 minutes behind each other on the same track. So the smallest delay will cause a lower speed when coming off the HSL for example.

Hoeveel minuten was het verschil tussen jou en de Thalys bij aankomst in Amsterdam aangezien de Thalys 300 rijdt en TRAXX 160 😁

Die was net vertrokken uit Schiphol toen was daar binnen kwamen rollen. Die 300km/u maakt geen enorm verschil in ons kleine landje. 😉😉

Hello Nice video. Thank you. I was wondering why a conventional train is running on a HST line ? I doubt that the Traxx engine series E 186 could go faster than 160 or 200 kmh on a line designed for 320 kmh. So why usig an HST line rather than a conventional, upgraded line ? Thank you for your comments. And "bonne route" as we say, even for train drivers !

I think their replacements are only capable of 200km/h, interestingly (surprised that they aren't 225, similar to how in the UK on HS1 the Javelins are capable of 225km/h while running alongside the 300km/h Eurostars). I guess part of the reason may be that there aren't any upgraded lines, and the capacity on the high speed line allows for these to fit in?

Hi there! :D In the past NS ordered new trains (Fyra V250). But those trains literally fell apart and were send back to Italy. Because of that TRAXX had to do the work much longer than expected. Now new ICNG trains are ordered. Those train will run 200km/h instead of 160km/h. Don't know the exact reason why NS did not choose a train that runs at least 225km/h. :) Possibly because the short distances don't give a lot of time shortage on the schedule. :)

@@MachinistStefan and @fetchstix Thank to the both of you for your answers. Waiting to see these NG trains that seems to be equivalent to the Coradia stream series from Alstom. They benefit from a fast acceleration ratio (1,2 m.s-2) and can run up to 200. I am not familiar with the UK material but possibily there is no equivalent on the market to be run in continental Europe, at the continental rail gauge which is a bit larger than the UK rail gauge... How long does it take for a full stop with one of these trains on full speed?

At full speed for these trains about 700-1000 meters on dry tracks I think. Also because these trains don't have magnetic brakes on board.

Thanks! Ja, kort... Maar best wat werk zoals je zag. Haha. Video's over het normale net zijn iets minder werk. 🤣🤣 De toeslag Rotterdam - Schiphol geldt omdat je via die weg een half uur sneller bent dan Schiphol - Leiden - Rotterdam. Tussen Rotterdam en Breda is de tijdwinst minimaal. Dus daar geen toeslag. 😊

lol 2 minutes in the US with Amtrack would mean "On time". Even if we are delayed by hours there is never an excuse form the machinist here. Sad.

Haha true fact! In The Netherlands it's all just a little bit different though. 😁 With a two minute delay connections can get lost and people will end up taking a train later (10-15 minutes most of the time). The Dutch like to be punctual.
