You saved and taught me how to drive Bossman’s Stanier 8F in the process! The locomotive is quite similar to the Black 5 :) Thank you!

As always - fantastic ! I would love to see you do more steam train scenarios. Your videos are a godsend and absolutely brilliant for learning. Thank you so much and keep up the exemplary work on your channel.

Most LNER steam locomotives had speedometers. Lined along the roof would be 8 various gauges for driving and managing the locomotive. Nigel Gresley and Arthur Peppercorn equipped their locomotives well.

They were very common with the GWR as well. The whole not having them thing is a bit of a myth when applied to the late Big Four era and BR.

Thanks a lot! This video taught me how to drive steam engines, and they're actually quite fun. I never properly drove one before, and only tried twice or something before just going back to electric trains, hehe.

+Herrieberg Awesome! My pleasure, I'm glad this video helped you with driving steam locos. They are quite fun to drive and handle completely differently to modern trains :)

Peter, A fascinating and informative video; I can now understand other steam videos that don't give a commentary. Many thanks. Roger Crick

Roger Crick Thank you Roger! Indeed, steam locos are very different in the way you drive them and there are common mistakes people who aren't familiar with them make. I'm glad that this video has helped you learn more about steam loco handling :)

A very nice, and extremely useful run, Peter! I've just recently been attempting to get a decent grip on steam operations in TS, and this timely video has done (shall do) wonders for me. Moreover, I'd be keen on whatever you can put together on the more detailed (auto-fireman off) mode of operations. Many thanks for your sterling work. -Jon

Small tip, you can set the cutoff lower than 20%. As long as you are in full second valve, you can use the cutoff to control your speed.

Have you seen the new Peppercorn K1? It has a spedometer, steam chest preseeure gauge, and highly realistic physics. It is the only steam loco that I can drive and fire without the HUD. I t would be interesting to see a journey with this engine on the Weardale and Teasdale.

PTGRail If you do, it would great to watch. As one driver said, "if one of those bulls don't go over the mountain, it'll go through it." And they ARE refurbishing one to operate [hopefully it will be ready in 2019].

Well you mention that they were restricted to 60mph but there are rumours of one managing 96mph on a long straight section called the “racing strip”

I assume that Speed limits didn't exist in the steam days then? You mentioned that the loco in this piece had a speedo but many steam trains didn't.
@PTGRail9 жыл бұрын
+Sion Lewis Speed limits did indeed exist in steam days, but drivers were supposed to be able to judge how fast they were travelling when they didn't have a speedo.
@sionlewis8279 жыл бұрын
Well done to them for being able to do that

Hi Pete, what you are doing wrong is keeping the regulator at 50% Steam trains are designed to be ran with the regulator wide open for the best acceleration.
@sweed64877 жыл бұрын
No. 85 Merlin it's fine sometimes if you want more boiler pressure. I manage to accelerate and gain pressure at the same time with the right balance of regulator and reverser.

Air brakes are used on steam locomotive but there is only some that use air the isle of wight steam railway uses air only every loco has a air pump. The island has used air for over 150 years now no vacuum is used but there are locos that do have vacuum but it is not in use and not even connected

In reality the only time the modern trains stop at platform 4 is when its going from Dumfries to Newcastle via Carlisle, the rest of the time it stops and starts at platform 7, unless its coming up from Newcastle where its platform 3.
