That doesn't look too bad actually. When my dad built our first HO layout, we painted it a similar dark brown color. We were too cheap to buy ground foam, so for the longest time it stayed that chocolate brown color. That layout was sawed in half when we moved. Made it 2 4x4 halves. When I built my first personal layout a few years ago, I also had to tear apart the base and start over because the top warped.

Starting a Layout Rocks! Work Slowly on it.

Why stick to a regular table? Why not do it as a shelf style that goes around the room or nearly around the room. You could then adjust stuff so that a track goes behind the computer and such. You end up having a much larger layout if you don’t think of the layout as a full table and instead look at it as shelves or multiple small tables

In the future I would like to build a layout that goes around the perimeter of the room maybe even juts in to the middle with an islander too. But we are planning to move in a year to year and a half once my girls graduate high school. So for now a cobbled together table will suffice that I can easily just rip up and throw away when I'm ready to move.
