I have been training martial arts for over 40 years, and decided to subscribe. Reason: I love it when someone focus on basics. Basics saves lives. While many people want fancy arty farty techniques, those focusing on basics become winners. How many punches in boxing? Not many, but mastering those few basic punches creates GREAT fighters. Keep going Matt, love your contents, and cane techniques.
@pasquinilli2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Boere. That’s a great endorsement and what I am trying to do. I’ve spent my life doing “arty farty” and now all I care about is what works. Immediate, direct, and explosive! Just like a straight punch in boxing!
@timeno17632 жыл бұрын
The same is true across the board, including sports. The teams who win championships are those who have mastered the basics to the point that performing the basics has become second nature; even zen, if you will. That's why you TRAIN. Conditioning, muscle memory, and refining technique to perfection. Then when the time comes, you're ready. The discipline to spend time in training is never a bad investment. 👊Tang SOO !!!

Hi Matt, good to have you back. When. i was instructing students with standing issues, due to weak leg muscle strength, i had them begin training performing the following exercise. Obtaining two straight back chairs, one chair would be put in front of the other facing the same direction. The student would then sit down, holding the top of the back of the other in front.. Then the student would repeatedly simply stand up and then sit down . By sitting on the chair, it would help them keep stable, and when sitting, the knees would not exceed 45 degrees so as not to strain the knee joint. God bless. Doug.

I apologize for my ignorance. I recently watched one of your videos about using a stick or dowel for self defense. I bought a stick & info on how to use it. It is 1/2 the length that you have suggested , it is 8 in long & 1 1/4 in thick it has a cord attached, & is a formidable weapon.Made of very hard wood. I LOVE what you are teaching. The nice thing about my stick is that you can put it in your pocket, & the string gives it the ability to be swung & also not dropped as it is around your wrist. TOTALLY LOVE WHAT YOU ARE DOING!

I know, it's cheating, (lol) but so is a 20 year old punk (or two) ,attacking a senior citizen. Also do random "cold start" drills in street clothes, into the heavy bag. Thanks for the video. I have a quick data point. I was doing finger rolls the other night with a 1.25 to 1.5 inch pine dowel that has not been oiled. It's only four feet long, so it's not heavy at all. I was doing the individual roll through each finger in each direction as I have always done. I decided to try some of those rolls where I go from the pinkie over the next three fingers directly back to the thumb. I could do it a little bit on the first try. I probably dropped the dowel one out of three times or a little more, but I still consider that to be doing the move. There are other things that I've tried with much higher initial failure rates. I still prefer the other finger roll because the roll each way through each finger gives more workout to all of the extensors. However, I will continue to do the pinkie to thumb direct roll from time to time. To me, any success rate above 25% on a new move is great. I don't stop just because my success rate is lower, but the 50% to 67% success rate of this one felt good. I have been trying to do pushups for a while. I'm having some pain in the middle of my back. I think that pain might be from the weight of my belly hanging downwards while I do the pushups. Even though I try to tighten everything, that weight could be causing a problem. I've also tried hanging by my hands a bit over the past month. Bob and Brad recommend just hanging for people who can't do a pull-up. (I try to start pull-ups while I'm hanging. Maybe I'll get there someday as well.) The hanging might also be a source of the pain. I told my chiropractor about the pain and this possible reason for the pain. She said that I might be right. She also said that my back seems fine in terms of the skeletal structure and the muscle structure. She thinks I should continue the pushups unless the pain increases badly. She says I've had pretty good movement recently and that might be because of the pushups. She supports what you've recommended. I'll look at doing those foot movements by themselves. I've been trying to incorporate those foot movements into my cane spinning. I try to move forward and backwards a little bit and side to side a little bit while doing figure 8 spins with the cane. However, I end up not doing that many foot movements in each direction because trying to think about doing both things at once causes me to move my feet very slowly. I am focusing on the foot movement sequence that you mentioned here. I'm still doing some squats. Sometimes, I do them weighted by holding a sandbag. Sometimes, I do them unweighted as I fill the reservoir on my air rifle.

Perhaps you cover it elsewhere, but power comes from the hips. Learning how to punch in conjunction with hip rotation is a heck of a lot more powerful. This applies to both a cross and a jab (although that takes more time to master). Not sure I would teach a novice to punch with a closed fist, likely break their hand.

I dare say you will cover making the fist properly and targets. I know of a venue locally with a punching machine /meter, presumably so overwrought or drunk youth punch that rather than each other; then they think they're hard and hit something and ouch (serves them right). I would not encourage this except as a matter of necessity, but for self-defence not good to damage yourself more than the attacker. I have doubts about using a fist because there are other less risky options for people who have not conditioned their hands..

This video is complete nonsense. The title of the video is hit harder and faster, he didn't even discuss any of that in the entire video. This is about basic pushups and squats, 1/4 squats at that. If what he is implying is true weight lifters and bodybuilders would be hard hitters. If you look at boxers or real martial artists they are not muscle bound. Hitting harder and faster has more to do with relaxation and proper technique than muscle. He is also completely wrong about locking out your elbow at the end. I hate it when people put up a title or headline and then the video turns out to be completely unrelated fluff.
