@@kurtiscleary9759 Slow as hell. 34 and started just over a year ago, but I'm very active in general (cycling, hiking, walking) and getting a caloric surplus is tough because I only eat whole foods and quite healthy, but kind of low on carbs (too many diabetics in my bloodline). My body seems super persistent at not changing its weight (I think I gained 1-2 kg), although I definitely look more muscular than when I started off. Worth mentioning that I maybe would've gained more weight if I also trained legs with weights, but then I wouldn't be able to also hike and cycle because my legs would be fried.

12:50 - 13:08 I was one of those dudes in the heavyweight division. To talk about Brian's point about guys squatting 5 and 6 plates per side but not placing in the top 5 - so much really goes into that. I don't train that way. I work with 3DMJ so I train pretty intelligently myself and I placed 7th. Training smart or not squatting heavy isn't necessarily the key to placing well at the world level. You've got other factors like your conditioning, genetics, presentation that all heavily play a role. And it's also so close at that level. We've all come out of that season winning some shows, but that show is pro worlds. Someone has to win and someone has to come last even if everyone looks great. Ultimately it's all about how everyone looks and what the judges collectively think of how you look. Multiple factors go into that, not just how you train. I mean a previous world champ Babacar squats and deadlifts like a beast. If we were to apply the same logic we could say that was a factor in his success. Many things lead to a result so lets not pretend like one training style is superior based on who wins or doesn't win a particular show.
