Training your Chihuahua to Stay! | Sweetie Pie Pets by Kelly Swift

One of the first things I work on is the “Stay” or “wait” command. This command requires your dog to watch and be attentive and could actually be a life saver, for instance if your Chihuahua is about to dart out after a ball, just telling them to “STAY” could prevent a terrible accident.
I begin with a simple hand gesture and a voice command of STAY. You can say WAIT if you want. I don’t really find any difference between the two as long as you are consistent.
The hand gesture keeps Mila in place when she’s close up to me. So really, at this distance, she can’t even move forward even if she wanted to.

After a local 4 week (1 session per week) training program with my female Chi Luna, the Stay command is probably the most successful one so far. Most useful for stopping her from trying to rip the throat off my postman, lol!

Aww too cute! My little Chi boy doesn't seem to have any ears😅and I can't seem to find a treat or food that he loves,He get bored very quickly and he doesn't eat that much he pulls his nose up to most foods I give him. I'm definitely going to try this with my boy😃he is 5 months old.

Awee they’re so cute. I have tried training my chihuahua since she was 4 months old as soon as I got her. She knows a few tricks now but cannot sustain them if she gets too excited. Haha. But too bad she’s very picky and not very food motivated. Or it depends on the food. That’s why it’s a bit difficult to train her now. She does not obey me if I don’t have the kind of food that she likes. Now what I really want to teach her is to behave every time we’re outdoors. We take her for long walks everyday but still there are times that we accidentally let do of the leash and she starts to run for her life like it’s her first time to go out 🤣🤣😭 can you teach us how to get them obey us or come to us even if we’re outdoors?

Arthur is adorable! I have a 5 month old female who I am trying to leash train. When I put her harness and leash on her she won’t move. She just sits there and won’t move! Any suggestions!

Thank you. Awe, poor baby. She’s one of those who thinks she’s stuck. I recommend you just keep working with her. Also praise her with chicken bites every time she has on the harness and maybe encourage her to come to you to receive her bite of chicken …. Even if it’s just a step or 2. Eventually she’ll get over her resistance. It just takes practice and patience ❤️

I've done the necessary research on the breed but I just wanted your perspective seeing you own chihuahuas, it would be beneficial for me to know cause I'm looking at maybe getting a chihuahua to train to be my emotional support for my autism and depression
