I bought a 12" d guard from them years ago and the tip of mine came blunted as well. I clipped the blade and made it a bowie, reprofiled the edge, polished it to a mirror finish then gave it a camo pattern patina. I then made it a thick leather sheath with a tomahawk loop. These are good project blades for a great price imo. I never realized how hardcore they are until this video. Well done!😊

The dull tip has a reason. They are done so to reinforce it against ground strikes. Since machetes are used mostly to cut vegetation (with the sweet spot being around 3/4ths of the blade measuring from the handle), sometimes one will hit a rock with a low swing and damage the tip more than it should. The dull edge leaves more material up there to strengthen it and hopefully minimize risk of fracture.
@joex Жыл бұрын
dull tip makes no sense!
@gre8 Жыл бұрын
@@joex I think that for normal machete use it does (clearing foliage and chopping moderate branches). I sharpened mind for the sake of it and because I use it for light tasks around the yard. But people also use it to clear low foliage and it would dull quickly, constantly hitting the ground, anyway. So I see a rationale behind it. I do agree that they are overall a bit dull, but the very tip doesn't bother me much
@shawnpepin7890 Жыл бұрын
@JOE X I mean, it clearly does. He gave you a completely valid reason, and given this company has been making awesome work machetes for decades, and they do it on purpose (mine has the same dull tip) I can completely see why they do it as I sharpened my tip up, and after about 20 min of yard work the tips edge had chips and dings that probably wouldn't have been there if I just left the tip blunt. It's OK to learn things joe

Hahaha... Great job! Flexomatrix and bendomatrix :)). Two weeks ago I was wondering when will you test a Tramontina, after I saw your tests against the Marble's, Ontario and Cold Steel machetes. Tramontina is generally considered top in its speciality. I've heard that about 90% of the machetes used in the Amazon Jungle are Tramontinas (not sure how accurate that is, but I've seen this written somewhere). The tip is blunt on purpose: most of the users need machetes only for brush cutting and chopping. In this case, having a blunt tip helps you to avoid injuries and also to avoid tip damage if you hit the ground with it by mistake. It also keeps you away from legal issues in case the police finds you with the machete in your car (if there's no tip you can explain that it's for wood only and you hold it wihout a tip specifically to avoid being used as a weapon). For those users who want to use it as a weapon, the tip can be sharpened and modified as needed. The edge is anyway very coarse from the factory and it needs sharpening anyway. The edge comes with a very coarse edge, in order to keep the production costs low. If you sharpen it properly and make it shaving sharp, the choppping power doubles at the same amount of applied power. Additional tip: you can buy the wood handle version, wrap some webbing around its handle and soak it in epoxy resin. It will become like micarta and hold a lifetime. Otherwise the handles on Tramontina machetes get lose very quickly. Many people around the world get Tramontina machetes as blanks that they can further modify and refine to make cooler big blades out of them. You can use a flexible grinder to cut the blade into a different shape. Make sure you hold a hose with water flowing on it, so that you don't ruin its heat treatment if doing this (otherwise the steel may soften from severe heating). BTW: I need an extra hole for handle pins on one of my Tramontinas. May I bring it to your Glock 17? :)))))))

wow, that would be great, i could test it end of february! what do you have in mind?
@mdubb48552 жыл бұрын
@@joex the Grik is one of my EDC carry favorites in the "legal limit" 3" category, although it looks odd and isn't popular; it does have your fave, The TriAd and relatively thick blade stock. I find it light to carry, and like the plastic "doesn't abrade my pockets" plastic clip. The Kiradashi is maybe 2.75" but it has TriAd lock too. I see it as in the Delica space but with a much better kickback design. I use this for overseas travel, usually with thumbstuds removed. Then there's the wildcard, the Crawford 1. It's Cold Steel's take on a flick-able combat folder - but built with my great enemy, a liner lock. Your liner lock Luzon didn't fail as early as I had expected even without the secondary liner lock engaged. The Crawford is designed to look threatening, but it's very inexpensive over here with Krupp 4116 steel (not technically German because I believe they opened a foundry in China). So I guess I lean towards the Crawford 1. We might learn more from it, in particular whether Cold Steel has designed a liner lock that doesn't immediately fail. Especially since it has apparent pretensions of pokeability, I see a car roof or hood or door panel in its future. What do you think? You can make the final choice. Let me know how much to send, I think you still have a money-for-beer link, right?

Tramontina's machete is very cheap and simple. The most common size here in Brazil is the 18" with a wooden handle, the 24" size is not very common. As they are sold in many types of stores, for safety reasons, they only come pre-sharpened, which must be finished before use. The factory doesn't specify the exact steel here in BR, but I don't believe it's 1070, maybe between 1045 and 1060. Great video, so funny!🤣

@@joex I bought mine in a military store. They were just thrown into a metal container with tons of other, different machetes. A hardware store nearby does the same thing with their machetes. I think the idea is to keep simple minded people and kids from cutting their arms into pieces. Also, when stored in this manner, they're gonna get dull anyway from people pulling them out, having a look at them, putting them back, looking at another one and so on. So there is not really a point in properly sharpening them and from a sellers perspective it might even be more of a risk to have fully sharpened machetes lying around in your store as you wouldn't want your customers to drip their blood everywhere. Personally i don't see a problem in getting a blunt machete. Tramontinas are cheap and if you use your machete you'll have to resharpen it anyway at some point. The durability and edge holding capability is what counts and considering price and intended use case, it held up quite well in those categories, I'd say. But the thing I don't quite understand is, why would you even care about the tip in a machete? It's for chopping. If you want something pointy, get a rapier or a spear, not a tool that's made for chopping.

My kid decided to chop ants on the driveway with it and killed some ants, missed a bunch of them. No problem. I just filed with to get it sharp again. I chop down branches up to 2 inches with one or a few whacks. A very nice/tough steel and balance in the hand.
