Appreciate this, and I especially appreciate the nod to GamerGate. The online atheist and skeptic community was ENORMOUSLY involved in the general "anti-sjw" movement of 10 years ago that morphed into the alt-right and contributed so much to the extreme shift we've seen in the Overton window and the general degradation of public discourse about any topic that doesn't center cis-ness, male-ness, whiteness, straightness, etc. There's a relatively direct line of cascading effects from "SJWs are ruining video games," organized and publicized largely by "skeptics" on KZbin to "DEI caused Baltamore's bridge to collapse." It's been a problem for a long time, and it's still a fucking problem. Something about being so sure of yourself and your worldview that you'll ignore evidence that conflicts with it and follow political alliances that feed that feeling of "Of course my gut is correct!" Coming from an evangelical background, I've said for YEARS that many "skeptics" just trade Jesus for some other form of evangelism, drive the same wagon with a new coat of paint. Some of y'all are just happy you've found a new way to spread the Good News Of I'm Correct and now that you proudly say "I don't believe in 6000 years!" you've never stopped to consider what other things you still believe that came from the same source.

Thank you for speaking out on this! One thing that I think should be clarified is that this focus on naturally occurring intersex conditions works really well to debunk any proposed naive definitions of biological sex, but those conditions shouldn't be confused as being the one thing that validates someone's gender identity being different from their assigned sex. So basically, being trans doesn't actually hinge on any of the conditions that you presented, but the intersex conditions do debunk most anti-trans talking points.

@secularidiot90526 күн бұрын
Kinda, because this whole issue stems from sociological factors, so for this to apply onto non-humans those non-humans would have to have defined gender norms and roles that can be subverted. I believe there is actually a case of this among baboons where a population was found that had reversed gender roles, with females being the dominant “alphas” while the males were their submissive husbands. But that isn’t so much transgender as it is a cultural shift, and my opinion (although I am no anthropologist) is that transgender individuals emerge in populations where selection pressures are significantly reduced.

Also, my go to argument, and this has literally NEVER failed, with transphobes is to just ask them; what is the best treatment for gender dysphoria. You will NEVER hear them say the actually correct answer; matching their gender expression to their gender identity. That is the ACTUAL correct answer. But they will always say something like "Not playing into their delusions!" "Help them realize it's just a phase and don't feed into their gender identity!" or something like that. Which, no. Not even close. Those are NOT the best treatment methods, those methods produce a god awful amount of SUICIDES in people with gender dysphoria. So you know as soon as they say that they don't actually give a shit about trans people. They don't care about any of the relevant facts, science or research. They want trans people to stop being trans or to hide their trans identity because seeing trans people grosses them out and makes them uncomfortable. I asked that question during the last MDD row over the subject and Josh gave the exact answer of "do the thing that has caused tons of suicides and not the thing that actually helps people be more stable and mentally healthy." Taylor said "We should research that!" Oh Taylor you sweet naive bitch-sicle. We HAVE researched that.

I agree with so much of what you say including the majority of what you say here, there is however one thing I would question… by definition if we accept sex is non binary and if we accept that this is because as you correctly say some people have complex sex situations and may have medical procedures to become comfortable, why do we then want to force the end result back into binary terminology. Indeed saying a trans woman is a woman not a trans woman is denying that they are a trans woman. Btw the issue with your statistics is that, if the % of trans people is say 2%, then as trans people become more accepted (which is a good thing) then by definition the number of trans athletes will trend towards that same 2%.
@PawelLachowicz.23 сағат бұрын
I'm obviously agreed with you on this topic. Yet there's something, I'm confused about. Organism produces male or female gametes so technically, in contexts of reproduction, there are tow sexes - there are no intermediate types of sex cells between sperm- and egg cells.. There is spectrum of sexual characteristics, so it is the spectrum between or around or out of the two sexes. This is my understanding and I can't I can't tell what's wrong with it?

I think the reasoning is a little flawed here. In the first half of the video you listed some of genetic and developmental issues that can lead to intersexuality to make a point that sex isn't binary. Ok, I totally agree that these things exist, biology is strange and complicated. However at 6:22 you have concluded that sex is solely determined by identity, which seemingly has nothing to do with your previous line of argumentation. If sex is disconnected from biology, why did you even make biological arguments?
@StueGrifn13 күн бұрын
Sex isn't disconnected from biology, nor did Dan argue so. Dan argued that reducing the "strange and complex" biology of the self-expression of sex to a single variable is *always* reductive to the point of inaccuracy. Consider all of the spectra shown at 2:08, and any additional spectra you could come up with. For all of the attempts to classify sex along any of these spectra, each and every one has exceptions to it -- except identity. A person's self-perception is what they say it is, 100% of the time, without exception. I'm not ready to start 'No True Scotsman'-ing people's self-perceptions as an outside observer. "There are five lights Jean-Luc," "No, the gaslights in the room haven't dimmed," and so on.

Gender is a social construct. Sex is highly variable in multiple aspects, but the point you seem to be missing here is that you are your mind, not your body. You can't change someone's identity no matter how much you torture them, which is why conversion therapy doesn't work. That's why all the evidence and all of the experts agree that the best outcome for trans people is to adapt the body to match the mind, not the other way around.

I really don't understand why Coyne and Dawkins want to die on that hill. Fair enough, the spectrum you talk about is a probability distribution with two very big peaks, that we colloquially name man and woman, but everybody gets that, it's utterly trivial. And the very expression transwoman would not make sense if there were not those two categories. But then why do Coyne and Dawkins absolutely want to stick to one and one criterion only? And why is Dawkins happily spreading misinformation, as we saw this summer with Imane Khelif? That broke the camel back completely for me that particular instance. We have a girl who managed to become an elite boxer in a very patriarchal society where many people consider a woman should absolutely not be on a ring showing her legs and her shoulders. But she overcame these prejudices, so much so that she is supported by nearly everyone in Algeria. I live in France, where there is a sizeable community of people from that country, and many paraded in the street for her. She is a hero of feminism. But in the name of feminism, Dawkins just repeated the falsehood thrown at her by a corrupt Russian boxing organisation. Dawkins lost all respect from me.

Good video but a couple of points. 1. Many people will not get past the "trans women are women" statement at the start. I don't know if you put it there to encourage people to watch the video or not but it is likely to stop people watching a video in which many of the most important points are made in the final quarter. 2. I have some trouble with the sex is not binary thing. Sex is either unambiguously male or unambiguously female or, on relatively rare occasions, some failure of the sex determination process. I have some direct knowledge of this both as a career biologist & because my twins were X0/XY mosaic. Anyway my point is that saying sex is not binary implies that some third sex is possible & this simply is not the case. The so called spectrum of sexual phenotypes are all the result of some mixture of two sexes & so if we want to get people to appreciate the genuine range of phenotypes that does exist I think it is unhelpful to assert that sex is not binary. Personally I accept the binary nature of sex & then try to get people to understand the biology of the variations that do occur. I find this usually leads to more productive conversations.

"Sex is either unambiguously male or unambiguously female or, on relatively rare occasions, some failure of the sex determination process." That's three "or"s.. Therefore, you admit there is a spectrum. A Bimodal distribution will result in the vast majority to be one or the other... but there will always be a minority who fall in between the modes. You even say this: "The so called spectrum of sexual phenotypes are all the result of some mixture of two sexes." You keep on saying "as a biologist" and "biology" and you paint yourself as an "authority figure". But we're not talking about _biology._ We're talking about a highly specialized subset of biology; _genetics._ You've shown that your knowledge of genetics is equivalent to the least informed layman. There is more to sex determination than mere X or Y chromosomes. The Y chromosome itself is a badly mutated version of the X chromosome... Some have theorized that it will eventually it will become so mutated that it will become nonfunctional. But don't worry, it's very likely functional X chromosomes would begin to replace the dysfunctional Y chromosome well before the species becomes extinct. This is evidence by an entire species of Rodentia that has no Y chromosomes whatsoever. Yet, the vast majority of the species have standard sexual dimorphic characteristics. If we want people to "appreciate the genuine range of phenotypes that does exist" then we first need to work on ourselves to excise the childish, and thoroughly outdated belief, that biology can be sorted into neat little boxes without any overlap between them. This misrepresentation helps children to understand the basics, but life, especially genetics, is way more complex than that because they aren't able to understand the real explanation so moving beyond this thinking is required to have an accurate understanding of biology. As adults, we know that anything that is a result of a bimodal distribution system cannot, ever, be binary. Furthermore, we are capable of setting aside our beliefs that things are binary when they are in fact not when we are presented evidence to the contrary. When we encounter a person who is wrong, we educate. Since this video, my comment, and even you, admit that sex isn't binary, this means you are _educated_ enough to _know_ your belief that sex is binary to be wrong. There are intersex people who are fully capable of reproducing. They are both and neither male and female. So, trying to fore them to conform to the "male"/"female" label is wrong. Now that you got more than a "Hang it in a museum" response... my suggestion to you is, for you to grow up, pay attention to your education (otherwise it's wasted), and do so before your mindset results in you harming your child(ren). Unless, you want to be just like creationists and flerfs; denying facts in support of scientifically disproven theories, then we'll treat you just as we do them, with mockery. And scorn for those who have the education to know better but prefer to use their education to push political agendas.

Gender is definitely different from visible sex characteristics, but there exist evidence that a certain part of the development of the brain is a loosely sex-linked characteristic, and transgender people’s brains have the development of the gender they identify with. So if someone identifies as female to the point of gender dysphoria, they likely have brain chemistry typical of a female, and vice versa. But that chemistry doesn’t impact intellectual skills or likes/dislikes much - it’s mostly the “who am I” part of the brain that seems to be affected.

It has even been openly stated with the new bill just passed "Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act" badly named and very vague in it's enforcement. But on the flip side the people suffering from the genetic conditions, Developmental conditions, and/or the environmental conditions are less then 1% (Hudson Institute of Medical Research, Hormone development research June-August 2024). So in the same way we prescribe that humans have 2 arms and 2 legs, as amputation rates of 5.5 per 100 000 to 14.5 per 100 000 (National Institutes of Health , Amputation Rates and Associated Social Determinants Jan 1 2024) it is better to say their is a binary and the ones that do not fall in "the boxes" get the assistance that is deemed correct by medical professionals and not made spectacles of or having attention drawn to them. As both just want to live their best life without the attention. Also why are the results of the 1960s/70s experiments from the New York’s Child Development Center not, everything known about that just makes what is happening now even more horrific. I will admit one issue with it is the records remain sealed at Yale University until 2065. But everything that has been made public is terrifying in what it did to those poor children. I ask because there has to be a easier way rather then all the barriers and controls of one way or the denial of reality and abuse of the other.

I know exactly what spurred you to make this video (I’m a mod on the Peaceful Science forum). It was really disheartening to see some of those people, who are usually so solid on biology, have reactionary views on this topic.

This was in the works before that, but that was like “nope, doing it this week”. Very disappointing, yes.

People like simple. Challenge the longstanding of what defines sex, a man, a women, challenges the cultural norm. People will prefer the simple answer over the nuanced one, and will hate you for challenging the status quo.

Thank you for explaining this! Happy this video exists. Only complaint is the video does seem to conflate sex and gender a bit.

Have you already done an explainer on "biological sex" that we can revisit, or perhaps a resource that you think gets it right? I'm prone to saying that it's about gamete size and mobility rather than gonads, but sense that I may need to upgrade that to better reflect the actual complexity. I've deferred that complexity to sexual development where DSD's inevitably lead to about 1% of humanity being intersex. Any advice on being more technically correct on this matter is greatly appreciated. As I ponder this anew, it seems that the existence of about 12 SWYER Syndrome pregnancies/births would demolish the so-called sex and/or gender binaries?

Check out the video I linked in the description, lots of info there, presented in a great way.

This is a surprisingly unnuanced analysis. Nothing about finding the gender/sex distinction and this entire topic ridiculous has anything to do with being "used by the right". I'm from Europe and I always vote left, but this is a complete nothing-burger of a topic in my country. This is clearly a phenomenon that's mostly just American and concerns Americans. Heck, if conservatives are right about one issue, it may as well be a "broken clock is right twice a day" type of situation here, because saying a man can transition to be a woman, or vice versa, is obviously silly. Can we just roll words like "male" and "female", and "man" and "woman" back to being sex terms instead? This topic is pointless.

Thank you so much, Dr. Dan, for using your voice and platform to stand with us against the senseless bigotry and rampant misinformation about us! 💕🏳️⚧️ It's hard to describe the frustration of being unable to access any kind of media these days without being bombarded by hoards of hateful, ignorant people who absolutely refuse to apply any kind of critical thought regarding our existence and the science related to us.
