If you use a locked-down camera in your studio setup, it can be bothersome to constantly pull the memory card to transfer video to your computer. In this video, I show you a simple, hands-off way to accomplish the same thing.

what i appreciate so much about Scott, is that he is a "just go make your movie" kind of a guy, wheras, much of cybersphere has you bogged down in "which camera, lut, do i need / want", and "seven mistakes you are making but don't know it" kind of stuff. Much of life is a mystery and many of the questions will not be known, until you "go make your movie". always inspiring. god bless.....

Great tip! I just have no idea why they stopped making or supporting Eye-Fi cards. It was such a great, affordable device.

Thanks for the tip! I don't run a studio type setup but I can see this being super efficient if doing so. But this connector is probably super slow since it is meant to transfer at smaller data rates. I think a USB 2.x switch would work much easier like the Sabrent 4-Port USB 2.0 Hub. Only $7. Fast AND Frugal!

useful idea for when I use my dslr as a webcam/ blogging video. I am already using the useful USB/HDMI idea so it is attached to the PC anyway. Very clever!

I have a USB hub that has power switches for the individual ports. That would work too.

I miss hearing from you more. I loved your, how to make, videos. What kind of projects are you working on?

While I think this is a good idea in principal, my only issue is that a USB Type B non super speed port (aka printer port) like the one in the video currently at best is 480 Megabits per second, and many newer cameras have started to use USB Type C which most transfer somewhere between 5-20 Gigabits per second (and 40 Gigbits ports are in the works). That would translate to 41 times slower transfer speed for a camera with a 20 Gb/s port.

But with a "class 10" memory card, that won't help. It will still take as long to dump the card as it did to shoot the video.

@@JohnDlugosz not quite sure what is being referred to with a class 10 memory card, and why that would have any impact on anything outside of the card it self. The only time it's better to pull a memory card out is if the Cameras internal USB is an older standard, like say use 3.1 5Gb/s and one has a 20Gb/s memory card reader. Then it becomes a question of convince vs wear and tear. If one transfers directly from the camera for the convince then one just needs a USB switch as fast as their cameras port; however, if the goal is pure speed, and one has a significantly faster card reader then this whole thing becomes moot.

Use an EyeFi Mobi SD Card. It has Wi-fi built in so you can save images to the card and it will push them to a PC on your local network in the background in near real time. I say NTR because it will be delayed by a few seconds, it's not instantaneous. This works for stills (used it with both of my Canon DSLRs) but I have never tried it with video.

I would think this would make transfer times take way longer. Especially with avchd and a older pc. Did you experience longer transfer times as a result? Cause not all card readers are created equal and I would even think that using certain replacement cables could make things take longer.

Indeed, historically "take the card out" has been a "protip" as less technical users will naturally plug it in to the USB that way, and a separate card reader (with suitable card and compatibilites) can be _much_ faster. The connector he showed was not blue. But, the card appears to be "class 10" so the read speed is unlikely to be much greater (10 to 15 MB/S in my experience) and the cheap (and old, now) USB 2 implementations get up to 20. So that's not the limiting factor in this case.

Make sure camera has sufficient power during transfer. I can just imagine battery dying during a transfer. More costly to recover footage

You do not see reduced transfer speeds when using a cable?
@frugalfilmmaker

I do, but to me the convenience is worth it. Especially since the clips I am migrating are fairly short.

I don't get it: don't you have to unplug the cable anyway when you take your camera to go shooting with it?
@frugalfilmmaker

This is really for studio setups where you leave your camera in the same place all the time. Sorry I didn't make that more clear.

you still have to plug in cables all the time though. same consent and waste of time.
