Flour sacks were decorated specifically to be used by housewives sew. I have a quilt my grandmother made of flour sacks, and they were nice quailty fabric. That makes sense because a loosely woven fabric would not hold flour well.
@revelationquilts Жыл бұрын
Great point - plus they were so pretty. When flour companies found out that women were using them for quilts, they started making them pretty. Somewhere I saw a great documentary on this subject.
@laurietaylor8340 Жыл бұрын
My dad told about going with my granddad to get flour that his mom always used to make towels. When the companies started printing overall prints they had to get certain ones she requested. The companies also printed actual pattern pieces for children's clothes to be cut out and seen but they were for young kids and dad and his brother were older. Just saying.

I commented on the video when you bought these bandanas that they can be disappointingly thin and coarsely woven when the sizing is washed out, but that I was sure you'd come up with a way to make something beautiful out of them. Looks like your bandanas are better fabric than mine were, and you've certainly come up with an ingenious way to use them! I really like the way you"ve cut and recombined them to retain the overall circular design. You've got two unusual and colourful quilts there. Bravo!
@revelationquilts Жыл бұрын
Thank you - they honestly aren't as thin as people are thinking. They will be good car/picnic/beach quilts. Can't beat the price.

I’ve seen bandanas that are 100% cotton but almost see-thru for how thin they are. Would you use a stabilizer in that case?
@destrygraves Жыл бұрын
No border. I use the web technique when I do disappearing 9 patches to make sure they get sewn in the place I intend them to go. I just never knew that it was called that. The second round is a brilliant way to make 9 patches. Think small squares with a random effect or possibly ombre. Think postage stamp quilt. In whatever size you want you want the squares to be. Even could be a side project you work on with pieces leftover from a current quilting project. So much inspiration in one video. Thanks for sharing. PS: I just started this year using a spray starch before I press before I make the initial cuts. I was,and remain, impressed with the difference it makes. It’s a game changer if you’re using a less expensive fabric.

Brilliant idea to echo the design - bandana/lace and use what you have. I'm curious how the bandanas held up to washing and use? I know our bandanas carried as hankies/sweat mops get softer and more wonderful, hopefully those used for quilting do the same?

I made a bandana quilt a few years ago. Some of the takeaways were that the bandanna was definitely not square. The biggest takeaway was to use stabilizer because the bandannas were definitely thin and did not hold up long. I will definitely make another with stabilizer.
