I had no idea that you could paint fabric like this and it wouldn’t end up stiff and tacky feeling. This looks incredible!❤

It only works on particular types of fabric. I did this with some kitchen chairs a few years ago that did turn out tacky and the paint is starting to rub off from about 5 years of wear. She did also say at the beginning of the video to test on the fabric. So definitely do a test.

I've read that latex paint works as well as acrylic? Also a mix of 1 part water, 1 part fabric softener and 2 parts paint allows you to put it into a spray bottle? Thank you for posting!!
@OurUpcycledLife7 күн бұрын
I don’t think a spray bottle would work well you would still have to brush it in

How timely. I bought an outdated armchair on FB marketplace when I had my hip surgery. My OT suggested I get a chair with arms. I don't want to get rid of it and just last week I was thinking maybe I could paint it. Thank you for this tutorial. Your chair came out great.

could you let me know the brand of fabric softener you used. I am sure there are difference between the brands. Thank you.
@Hremo_15810 күн бұрын
I have done this a few of times. I used Amy Howards Chalk paint and Downey Fabric softener . Pre- Wetting the fabric is very important! The only other tip I would recommend is, use a better brush. I used the 3 inch Round brush. The kind you use for stenciling or waxing.
@OurUpcycledLife7 күн бұрын
Any fabric softener will work
@Oonagh7210 күн бұрын
I have probably asked this before but I’m old…have you ever considered a paint sprayer? I’m thinking it would allow you to skip the water strep since the paint will be thinner and would soak on its own. I like the simple white. Very chic.
@Bettinasisrg10 күн бұрын
There are recipes that call for 1•1•2 or one part water • one part fabric softener • two parts paint. Some also say acrylic paint instead of latex?
@Bettinasisrg10 күн бұрын
Whoops then you can spray that mix
@Hremo_15810 күн бұрын
Unfortunately No you can't skip the Pre-wetting part. Otherwise the paint will just lay on top of the fabric. Wetting the fabric opens up the fibers to grab the paint and allow it to soak in. It really is no different than when you use RIT dye. The fabric has to be wet. Or it will dry very hard on the surface. It won't be soft.

@ thanks for the reply!

Can it chip or peel?
@Hremo_15810 күн бұрын
I used Chalk paint and Fabric softener on my 30 yr old love seat. It was already white and turned very dingy yellow from age. I re-painted it white. I did it 3 yrs ago, I have had no issues. No chipping or peeling. Pre- wetting the fabric is Key.

Does the paint finish matter? Like eggshell, satin or flat? Im excited to paint my 2 side chairs that i was going to donate!!! Thanks for your inspiration.
@corinapare9545Күн бұрын
I’m going to guess that you would want to use a flat paint or eggshell. I think that whatever makes the paint glossy also makes it harder when it dries and that would affect the painted fabric too. The combination of flat paint and the fabric softener makes the best combination for the dried fabric I think.

I have a camel colored, microfiber, sofa & loveseat that ive had for about 20 years. I've had to reinforce a few boards underneath due to having kids who have been a little rough on it. So it's still in usable shape. However, it doesn't really go with the decor I want to go with. I'm wanting to paint them both a rich red, but wonder if that process will work with the microfiber fabric. Do you know if it will?
@OurUpcycledLife8 күн бұрын
I would try it on a hidden area first, just to make sure you like the results.
@WomanUnfiltered8 күн бұрын
@OurUpcycledLife Thanks. Unfortunately, that's just one project in a list of many right now. 🤣
@LifeLostSoul8 күн бұрын
Definitely check the type of fabric before doing this like she recommends. I did this with some kitchen chairs a few years ago. The fabric turned very tacky and has started to wear off over several years of use. Also you can just dye natural fabrics as well with fabric dye. But obviously you can't go lighter.

Great tip!

So is this easier than just recovering it? Several coats sounds like more work. Idk. I'm just asking. I have an old chair that has the ugliest fabric on it. Maybe I could do this
@thibodeaux99Күн бұрын
I would rather paint it. I don’t have clue one on how to recover a chair. I don’t sew. It’s hard to find a good upholstery shop and it can get really expensive.
@trishabaran15218 күн бұрын
I did this ! I was so concerned that it would look tacky or when someone sat on it the paint might come off on their clothes. It did not! The fabric was still sort & it wasn’t tacky at all. Plus you would have never known it was painted. I highly recommend it. I’ve done it a few times now . Vacuum your chair 🪑 really well first and then apply paint .🎨

Just being honest but I am not a fan of the white paint on the fabric. I thought it looked good after you finished the wood :-)
@jasondrummond945110 күн бұрын
I thought the paint was ugly, and the wood looks worse. All in all, a tired old chair looked ugly as hell by the time she was finished with it. Refinishing and re-upholstering might have produced something lovely - but this is merde. Of course, the up side is - she can always do that later - if she has the skills.
@OurUpcycledLife10 күн бұрын
I understand - it's definitely a more modern look. I love how it brightens things up!
