The original Animated Bumblebee seems pretty solid, unlike the vast majority of the line that had the dumb design decision to have clear plastic at critical joint components (ex.: Swindle).

I never understood complaints for fake car parts until Animated Bumblebee, his legs feel very wrong for two big reasons. The car feet are inaccurate, small, and I would’ve preferred they used the actual car parts that end up as his heels… which means he can’t use his iconic catchphrase! “WHEELS ON HEELS”

I kinda get why, even though I definitely don't agree with fake parts being an issue, because a lot of people feel kind of cheated when there's a character whose whole design is that his top of the car is supposed to become his chest, only for it to not actually become his chest during the engineering process. For me, I usually don't care about that because using fake parts is usually a lot harder and means there's a more interesting transformation process, not to mention it usually looks better 9 times out of 10. The real issue comes into place when it's done poorly like earthrise arcee and this lad where the real parts are just kinda randomly in sight and not well thought out or integrated properly.

I also seen the argument,that any figure have Very limited quanity of plastic types. For Bee its Yellow, Black and Clear. When 1 plastic-type-mould doesnt have place, cheaper to make some parts on another, and Clear mould have the most space for that

Recently got this guy and the first thing i did is paint up the icky clear windows in a matte finish acrylic black. Looks so much better, especially in car mode!

I have a love/hate relationship with the transparent plastic on transformers. It’s basically the last thing that we have that original Transformers all had. All the G1 stuff had diecast metal, screws holding them together, rubber tires, spring-loaded missile launchers, chrome all over the place, light and sound gimmicks. And clear plastic for all the windows. All kinds of things that make the toys look super good and functional in alt mode. The transparent windshield made it so that if you were just looking at it, you might not even know that it was a Transformer. They fit right in with other die cast metal cars you might have in the 80s. All that stuff is gone now. I am really not sure if it’s intentional or not, but clear windshield really are the last of those little details. But I do agree that it’s a huge breakage issue and it needs to go away.

While I generally like clear plastic, I really do agree it was way too transparent. My ideal is clear inserts back painted in metallic to keep depth while concealing junk, but imagining future chug with a 5 pack Wheeljack type deco doesn’t do well for me 😭. His left shoulder isn’t fully pinned on my copy, so it end up flopping, that combined with some weird gnarling on the joint made me fear it would break when I got him, but it’s just loose. But that much gnarling at that size is worrying

My guess is that besides that clear plastic probably being cheaper to produce, some clear plastic parts on a figure is probably gang molded with another piece of plastic i.e the Legacy Bumblebee's weapons and the whole windshield

I bought the new Bumblebee because my old one is falling apart and I'm quite fond of Animated Bumblebee, but I think he's overpriced for his size. However, as you mention, the engineering is great for the price. I can forgive the price for the size because he is a much better figure for his size than I expected.

Personally, I disagree that the legacy face should be less cartoonish. G1-ification in legacy is how they justify reinterpretations of characters that hold none of the energy of the original. It's how we got legacy prime arcee bulkhead and knockout. Without the head having the original look, it would stray too close to g1 and lose its animated personality. If legacy animated optimus had a g1 head, it wouldn't be right

I think the problem here, at least for me, is that the head shape clashes too much with the body. They kept the head very cartoon accurate, in terms of shape I mean, while the torso, arms and legs are just... blocks. The Legacy Optimus doesn't have this problem at all, while yeah he's more G1-ified you still can recognize the cartoon shapes in every part of his body. Same with Prowl, although he tends to be more G1 the design they gave him is coherent from the top of the head to the bottom of the feet. But this Bumblebee? It just doesn't flow as well, it almost looks like as they ripped the head from one of the old Animated toys and popped it on a generic body.

I painted mine to look better like 3 or 4 times now (if I transform him the entire pain job rips off, the plastic is awful for painting and there is no space for a paint layer) but I like him allot more now

The original does not have a fake chest. The figure transformers the same way Bumblebee does in the show. His chest only looks like the windshield of a car, it isnt really. The stripe is only on the wrong side to match the legs.
