From what I’ve heard, the old Shockwave toys are absolute nightmares to restore. Bad tolerances, brittle plastic, degrading rubber, corroded batteries, faulty electronics, at least it doesn’t have any gold plastic!

You've got the magic touch, Dave. I'm so happy to see that parts were able to be used to complete yours and that the RadioShack battery didn't explode. I remember "trading for the weekend" with a neighbor and when he returned it, Shockwave was missing his hose. I of course questioned him immediately and he said his 2 year old sister got a hold of it and ripped it off. We remained friends but we never traded toys after that day - never liked his sister much, either 😉.

I’m always so amazed at all of the engineering that went into designing these older G1 transformer figures. I know as a child in the 80’s, I was blown away when Transformers came out and even the Gobots to certain degree. I love watching videos of Dave doing transformer repairs. I find these videos to be very useful and informative. As always, thank you so much for sharing these great techniques for repairing toys and I’m looking forward to seeing the next one! Cheers!

Wow I didn't realize how complex, technical and fragile shockwave was. I had that toy as a kid it was my favorite transformer. When you tested him with the laser it made the sounds and lite up, I got a flashback. You cut a coil out of the springs that was exactly what I was thinking. You did a good job, you seem to have a lot of patience for tedious stuff like that, it's an obedience and a gift for things like that, you're pretty skilled and talented Mr Polloi, maybe it's just me but I feel like you have been making some really good videos lately, I like the one where you were talking about what you would do with your collection when you pass away, that got me thinking about myself and I'm still not sure, it would be nice to think that whoever hands it ends up in has some kind of apperception for it, like I said i don't know probably thinking to far ahead, anyways another great video and I learned something from it.

I think I would have thickened the wires with something ( another wire or two in the braid?) and rolled the ends and glued them so the tube would be one piece and both ends would have a stop to keep them in place. If the shrink tube is flexible enough, that is. Cool fix!

Another great restoration Dave. I'd be interested to see if you could come up with a way to fix that broken clear purple plastic gun barrel. I can remember seeing a Shockwave toy in the window of a Toyshop in France, when I was on holiday with my Mum and Dad as a little boy, but it was a Sunday and the shop was closed and we were leaving that same day (if it'd been open I could've probably asked for it as a Birthday or Xmas present). A year or so later though, I randomly found a Galactic Man figure in my local Tandy back here in the UK, the figure Hasbro licensed to use as Shockwave, and best of all it was only around a tenner, about a third of the price of something like a Galvatron. A bit of purple and yellow AirFix paint later and I finally had the Shockwave figure I'd wanted so badly in France.

Have you considered adding epoxy to reinforce the repairs you did with the plastic weld? It might keep the same thing from happening in the future. Also, cutting away a bit of the coil and stretching a little in the springs to lessen the pressure I’d also suggest using wire ties to hold the torso together during cure time and a heat gun to soften the plastic enough to remove the curve from the pieces that were pushed apart

Or just took the battery out in the first place? I've never done that with Shockwave (I don't have the original, but I do have a decent KO), but a lot of later Transformers have had sound effects that easily (and _accidentally)_ trigger, and I've often taken the batteries out of those to prevent annoying noises every time I play with them...

Could a decent hairdryer on a high setting with a concentrator nozzle, be a solution for warped plastics like Shockwave's chest piece? It's hot enough to make the plastic more malleable, but there's no water to affect electronics, or excessive heat, like a heatgun/paint stripper. Just an idea to try.

This was my favorite G1 transformer as a kid. I remember always being so careful with him when I played because I would have been crushed if he broke. I worried about the arm hose breaking and now all these years later for the 1st time I realize there were ACTUALLY wires inside that hose. I guess as a kid I always thought the wires ran through the length of the arm somehow. This toy looked great in both modes and I loved Shockwave because he had one of the best ratios of toy to cartoon accuracy factors. Some didn't fare so well (I'm lookin' at you Ratchet, Ironhide & Megatron!).

Forget the plastic glueing back together , what I did was bought long screws and use metal break line tubes to go through the shoulders to guide the screws to pull both sides together . Works 100 times Better than your method and I have repair 5 shockwaves the same way .
@sabre0smile4 жыл бұрын
I've found that when repairing screw pillars, gluing an extra bit of material around the outside can help quite a bit. The break is held in multiple directions and there's just a bit more material attached either side of the break. The best material for it tends to vary on the material one is repairing but I've had most success with very very thin styrene sheet and plastic glue or, believe it or not, a single sheet of tissue paper saturated with superglue. Not sure if there's the room to do so on this particular figure but a toy repairer can never have too many techniques in their arsenal!
@toypolloi4 жыл бұрын
I would normally do that as well. But there is no space on this toy at all. the arms use the post as a pivot point.
