Working in healthcare for almost 30 years, Yvonne Heath realized that many people are ill-prepared to navigate through grief, heartache and life’s challenges and suffer excessively. But there is a better way. What if we could talk about, plan and prepare for grief BEFORE grief arrives? What if we learned to Just Show Up for ourselves and each other?
We could be empowered, resilient and live happier lives. Yvonne Heath is a registered nurse who has become and author, speaker, and global change maker. She focuses on transforming our relationship with grief so that we can all live a more fulfilling life. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I lost my 18 year old son in a car wreck 2 days before his 19th birthday. We postponed his funeral to the day after it, but still had the viewing on the day he should have been 19. Death doesn’t care what day it is. And grief changes faces from moment to moment. One moment you can keep it at arms length not letting the reality of the situation reach your heart, other times it overwhelms you so that you can’t stop the tears, while still others you can’t breath deep or stay far from the bathroom because your stomach is a mess from the high cortisol levels you’re experiencing. I’m so tired of this pain. I just want my beautiful son back.

I am so truly sorry for your loss. I just lost my husband shortly after we were married. There's just nothing like the pain of losing the one you love the most. I wish I could give you a huge hug. My thoughts are with you.

I grieve for all those mourning the loss of a loved one. I know how it feels, I lost my precious husband from sudden death on 2/16/23. Grief is an agonizing journey. Some never completely make it.😢😢😢😢

We come to this earthly plane to share our experiences and to feel. Grief is also a gift. It allows you to measure the purity and deepness of connection. Beautiful.

Really hard to think of the death of your beloved as a gift. It’s a phylosophical approach that does not help in moments of raw pain.

All who die are not old, sometimes death is sudden. Both statements are so true.

Very good talk. Yes, it must be super hard working with the dying. I also believe we're eternal souls, and never considered death sad- until my gran passed away 2 years ago. I was shocked at how.. physical the grief was.

Thank you! So important to give people a relatively simple thing they can do when someone they care about is grieving. You're right, it's far too common for people to avoid grievers because they just don't know what to say or do - but they can just show up!

Thank you, Tamsen! You're so right. We need to talk about these things BEFORE so people have tangible things to hold onto. People are compassionate. We are just not taught that Just Showing Up is a gift and that everyone is qualified to love, care and support!!!

So true! We do all feel inadequate to respond to the grief experiences of others, whether they are loved ones, neighbours or friends, but the three magic words, "Just Show Up" are a perfect way to start! Thank-you for this beautiful and helpful message!
