Wat was really fun to see was how at first, I thought the blue boat had sunk, and it felt like sad painting. Then, the red boat just appeared again on top of the water! And it felt joyful!

Thank you for sharing your little moment of crisis because I think a lot of artists get that and seeing other people feel the same is a huge comfort! Only by challenging yourself and moving out of what you know you're capable of are you able to grow and I love seeing you explore and experiment with new stuff like oils. I think what could be fun is to draw the same picture with different mediums. Pencil sketch, markers, oil (pastels) and such and see how differently you work with the medium, how differently the same picture looks, how it influences the vibe of whatever you're drawing, etc.!

Regarding oil paints: I learned to use oils because I had to (for a class in college) and some of those paintings were nightmares, but once I got used to consistencies and became comfortable with the paints, oil painting became very fun. It's learning how they make sense that really sucks. In the class I took, we did mostly still life paintings, and the first one was just a still life in one single color of paint, to get used to the paints/painting depth/texture, the next one was a still life where we could (should) use every color in our palette but all the still life items were one of the primary colors, and after that we started doing more colorful stuff. One of them was painting in layers/glazing color in--the absolute worst process for me, but definitely helped me learn a lot. Again, oil painting is super frustrating, it's just also really fun if you can figure out how to make it work for you. I feel like chances are low that anyone reads this but I hope it's maybe helpful to someone! I'm also always up for an oil paint chat if anybody wants to talk shit about the entire artform/talk about learning!

I already really loved it at 6:55, your addition was so simple yet so pretty - and ponyo is one of my favourite movies - so i really loved how transparent it was there. But the end result also turned into something beautiful, yet so different and other-worldy! Maybe the hot air balloons are their transportation from the massive ship to the city in the clouds?

oooh when you can kinda see the buildings through the oil pastel sea in the earlier stages (and a bit in the final outcome as well), that looked super cool! the oil pastels ended up blending nicely with the original, loveee the sea and the added greenery especially. & I loved how with each detail you added more story to the artwork! Honestly the ship in the distance being actually humongous in scale is so fun LOL. The original was a lovely painting, but the piece you created seems like a place I'd love to venture to and explore

this was an intensely reaffirming video to watch. as someone who has been watching you create for quite a few years now, its inspiring to be able to see you work with a new medium, challenge yourself, and work through that moment of doubt to continue creating and step out of your comfort zone. The water and mountain look really good, and the hot air balloons really made it, they’re sweet and characterful. Couldn’t tell if you used the oil sticks too, they’re different from pastels, more like oil paint. I love the idea of people just moving upstairs, easy to pop out for a swim I suppose.

I've watched several videos of people doing this, and this is, by far, my favourite! I was worried at first, as I quite liked the original painting. But I love the end result! So many little details that tell a story and invite questions 😊 And it's always good to see the creative process, complete with it's ups and downs, rather than a video that makes it look easy.

Hi PJ, I really love these kinds of videos of yours. I loved the Bob Ross one as well. You showed us your genuine process, including all the imperfections, the crisis and frustration that every artist is all too familiar with. And even if the result might not have been up to your usual standard, you were not afraid to show it. This video showcased so beautifully how your creativity kept blooming, new little ideas kept popping into your head during the painting process, and slowly but surely, a story began to form within the painting, which then became so cool and charming that in the end, the technical imperfections weren't really that important at all. I feel like we (both as fellow creatives AND as the audience) are way too caught up in this idea that eveything you show to others needs to be polished and perfect, that all the messy parts should be cut out. Especially on the internet. It's really refreshing and comforting that someone as skilled and creative and accomplished as you deliberately shows it all, including the messy parts. Please keep going with this kind of format. It's really inspiring❤

i love this! always something ive wanted to have a go at! with the adding black detailing over the oil pastel, you can always try mixing some turps or white spirit so create a kind of paint and use a thin brush for those bits, its the only way i can deal with pastels haha

I love these kinds of videos, and PJ, I think you did a great job with this. I love your concept of the world flooding and people living the hills and hot air balloons. I would love to read a picture book or graphic novel set in a world like this. I'm glad that you took a chance on this project, and hope that you recover from the mental damage you seem to have taken while doing it. Your painting remind me of a book I got recommended a few years ago (tho I never got to finish it): Life in the sky by José Eduardo Agualusa. Where the earth flooded and got super hot, so everyone had to start living in these hot air boats in the sky.

You need to use a metric buttload (that’s the official measurement) of fixative for it to work! Like really coat whatever you’re trying to fix in it. Outside of course and upwind from fumes ❤️
