Thank you SO much! Literally almost 10 years after uploading this video and this is the ONLY place I've seen that explains how to properly export a Normal Pass from Blender.

As someone who found your video in my mad search for solutions, the latest versions of blender now add in gamma correction to your colors by default, even when your colors are only representing data. If you use this process your normalmap will be much lighter than it's supposed to be, giving you a less dramatic depth effect. I had to remove the auto gamma adjustment in sceen/color management, setting my render from default to raw.

Thanks for this clear explanation for something I assumed would be a default setting for Blender :)

Looked it up. When you're using CYCLES, you don't need the Invert node. Also, in Scene settings, under Color management, change from Default to Raw, seems to give better results. However the end render still seems off, a bit dark. Reply to me if you've found a way to get exactly right.

Actually blender does completely accurate normal maps. The reason why the color scheme in your first render didn't come out accurately was because the normals weren't baked onto the mesh. The bake settings can be found in the render tab

Doesn't work in 2.77, unfortunately... the result is yellowish and not what's needed
