You hit the nail on the head. I absolutely know I can rebuild my E4OD. I just have no clue how much time and money it is going to take. I started watching your videos trying to solve my non-locking converter. Now, knowing my truck is a '93 and all the things that needed to be corrected/upgraded in those years, I'm realizing I should to through the whole thing when I pull it out. On top of that, I'm the 6th owner and only put 7000 miles out of 125K and know not history on the truck. I have time line to get it all done by May when I'm planning a 2000 mile round trip with a gooseneck cargo trailer to buy my Dad's '73 F100 and take it to the F100 Grand Nationals. If I then make an error that doesn't show up until it's back in the truck, I'm screwed. I'm probably pulling the trans this afternoon. Wish me luck!

Awesome! You got this ! I just can’t stress enough of just taking your time “On the Bench” By that year it may have the updated center support bearing but still may have the aluminum O/D planet but you never know till you get into it ! Be meticulous and clean !clean ! clean ! Hit me up with any questions Very cool taking a road trip to show an old F-150 for sure if that’s not incentive I don’t know what is !

Like I said in another comment, I have been working on vehicles all my life. My father drove truck hauling steel and he was an owner/operator so when people joke about holding the flashlight for their father, I lived it. If that truck didn't run, we didn't eat. So when I was old enough to drive I could only afford to buy a piece of shit car and I had to keep it running because if you don't have wheels, the girls wouldn't talk to you. After high school I went to work spinning wrenches because that was all I knew how to do. In 1988 I started getting my ASE certifications and I have been ASE master certified/recertified for a long time so I know how automatic transmissions work at least well enough to pass the tests, but I have never rebuilt one from scratch. All of that being said, I agree with every word you said. Gather as much information as you can and don't stop because you can never have too much. I have a massive library of information in books and manuals. Also, stay humble, because you will stick it in your own ass if you don't. You describe it as staying apprehensive, I maintain a level of paranoia. I check and recheck, then check a few more times, and I don't relax until I go for a test drive and it works. Then I still tell the customer to call me if they have any problems. Learning how to rebuild transmissions is on my bucket list and I have no doubt that with the ATSG book and video on the E4OD, the fact I've watched every video by the guy at transmission bench several times, along with your amazing knowledge base and the magnitude of experience you've amassed over the decades of rebuilding thousands of transmissions, I can do it successfully. But I promise you I will still be paranoid the whole time.

Wow, You absolutely have the ABILITY to build your trans ! Checking and rechecking that is the difference between success and not ! Your attitude is on point my friend ! Now it’s time to getr’ done so to speak ! You got this no doubt! Next video Pump assembly going to be a good one ! Talk Soon thanks for the lengthy Comment your helping people also with comments like this who are willing to read them ! Funny I also started Professionally In 1988 and was working on cars since the age of 12 Good Stuff ! And the feeling of accomplishment having rebuilt your own trans and driving it down the “Road” successfully is on a whole different level.

This was an awesome video. Time for some honesty. I have only built manual trannys before. I live in Russia, and in 2012 I inherited a 1989 GAZ-24-10 Volga (look it up). It was love at first sight. However, with the such an on 'old' car, one needs the time, patience and knowledge of how to handle it, be it servicing the kingpins on the suspension or servicing the carburettor with warped surfaces. In the process you come across tons of old literature and, lo and behold, that the predecessor to my car, the original GAZ-M-21 from 1958, was originally to have an automatic transmission! As was the more upscale Chaika limousine. When I first saw the drawings, the hydraulic diagrams and the description my brain exploded (Yes, the steroids). The initial reaction was - thank got I drive the stick, and don't have to deal with any of this complex crap. However - it would always return to me. You know, this nagging feeling that you want to get your mind round it. It made no sense, but you knew, that it was designed by a human, and that guy knew what he was doing. Long story short - the Russian transmissions were carbon copy's from Ford's Ford-o-matic and Cruise-o-matic. So it was only a time I came across oldcarbrochures and then youtubers such as hirram guiterrez, precision transmissions, transmission bench, weber state auto, siu automotive, curmudgeon transmission and many more. Each has his own approach. Then, thanks to google, to lots of legal and not so legal forums and websites, accumulated all this library that I love to read through (can send it across if you want). Btw this 'itch' began in 2012 and only in 2021 did I dive into it, so you can say this is a calling. Long story short, I think there is a huge gap in knowledge, not only on how to build a transmission, but the development history. For example it still is a mystery to me on how Ford and Borg-Warner ended up producing effectively the same unit in the 1960s. The irony is that I am die hard purist when it comes to driving, and anything that does not have three pedals is not for me... As for everything else, like being apprehensive and not overconfident, hell, I remember when I set upon upgrading my car to front disk brakes, and it turned out I had replace half of the front suspension, as the spindle was only compatible with that, which had a castor angle, as the older front drum style had that kingpin fully vertical.

Damn , Your a special breed my friend ! I would love to travel to Russia and hang out in your garage kind of thing ! We’re all people on this planet even with the stupid division going on with the higher ups between our countries! Your knowledge retention is impeccable and you had me fooled ! I’m the type without doing it I don’t retain squat ! But when I do do it for sure it sticks “generally” Pretty cool you’ve done manuals there a whole different breed but transmission all the same so to speak I will look up your car the least I can do watching all my videos literally! And as you I am always looking to learn something new ! Perfect statement everyone has there own way of doing things and I assure you I have gone down the “Rabbit” Hole on so many transmissions I’m surprised I have any hair left ! But with that said I know a lot but not even close to everything I need to know but I make it happen and get it right 100% of the time to the best of my knowledge. I watch building videos a bunch and learn a bunch all the time“Whatever it takes” is my Motto ! I’ll leave this conversation at that and will talk soon my friend have a great day 🤔 or evening in your end of the planet !

Another great video, Possibly one of the best yet. You’re exactly right, There will be challenges along the way and if ya let things get ya to the Fk It Mode, That’s when things usually get worse. Progress not Perfection. I know there’s more folks out there that have watched this video that forgot to hit the like button but they can relate to every word. Mindset is Paramount when approaching any very difficult task. I’m plenty scared of reaching into 490-500+ volts of electricity on commercial RTU units but they break down too, Somebody’s gotta diagnose and fix em, and walk away Alive. Awesome Messages in these videos!

@@marshallsanders5672 Found the issue. Because the center support assembly is not pressed down like if it were in the case this causes the "finger" spring to be uncompressed and taller than when installed. The overdrive planet hub was rubbing on the fingers and not engaging the thrust bearing due to spring not being compressed (IE spring height).

I have a question.whats the difference between level 1 / level 2 transmission build?
@marshallsanders5672
@marshallsanders5672 2 жыл бұрын
I’m assuming your talking about companies that offer different levels of the same transmission? Simple answer is the Higher the level the more H/P and Torque input the transmission can handle. Basically putting in stronger hard parts and more aggressive racing style clutches in it but it all comes at a higher price!

Good content. What amazes me is that why would a engineer design a part for a tranny that would allow you or someone rebuilding a tranny to install a part backwards? seems to me they should've been smart enough to not let something like that happen. Anyone have any thoughts on that opinion?

This is the reason that Elon musk is the leading engineer in the world today. I am paraphrasing his quote that in order to have a successful manufacturing business in the world today you must have the foresight to build a product that is simple to manufacture and repair. Raptor 2.0 was created from this concept.

Something i've learned in my time as an engineer is that not every part can be dummy proofed. Ultimately, whether you have the best testing systems, interlocks, witness marks, whatever, unless you have the workmanship to do the job right, people will find ways to fuck it up. I'm not saying Marshall was doing poor work in flipping that valve around, i'm just saying that you can't engineer a part that's impossible to assemble wrong every time. -Formerly a quality engineer at a manufacturing plant for home appliances **I just want to reiterate that this isn't a criticism of the video maker -- the only people who don't make mistakes don't do much work. The more you do the more you screw up. I mess up at work myself. It happens.**
