I have a 2012 rav4 I just bought that has 113k miles, never had trans fluid changed. I had a torque converter shudder but that stopped once shudder fix was applied. Do you think I should drain/fill the transmission fluid slowly over time? I've been told conflicting things. Some people say just continue driving until it fails, others say to flush the fluid, others say drain/fill a small amount over time. What do you think?

Shudder fix? Is it in reverse? mine does something like that if I put it in reverse and accelerate too fast

I did a drain / fill twice using valvoline synthetic on my 2012. Fluid should be a pinkish color. A transmission flush is costlier and probably a waste of $$.

My understanding from watching enough videos is that if you do a complete flush it would be done earlier on at the beginning stage of owing the car per lower miles. Other wise you risk damage to the transmission as it needs the particles built up over time to function. Again everyone has their opinion on what they do and what has worked. But when in doubt just drain and fill if the transmission isn't faulty or damaged.

I have a 1999 RAV4 with almost 300,000 miles on it. Automatic tranny shifts fine. I’m getting ready to put in a used engine in it. What do you recommend on the tranny fluid? I am going to drain the fluid when I remove the engine. Should I put the old fluid back in? Should I replace it with Toyota type T fluid, or can I use Use cv valvoline Max/life synthetic?

Any dexron fluid will work good. I used Castrol synthetic ATF

Would you recomend dropping the pan and doing the filter too? Would that use the same amount of fluid as this?

if you do, you risk leaking along the seal. unless it is leaking already.

@@west_park7993 very true. I did drop the pan and redo the seal, and you have to do it right or it will leak. I used the proper torque specs and took my time. It added at least 2 hours to the job.

@@JMXZY you have to clean up very very completely the matching surfaces and apply gray or black seal maker. watch it, if leaks, do it again. atf is very penetrating fluid.
