In addition to setting the plug out of the lower part.....I get that You also need to mount drain plug kit in a position where you can get sufficient leverage on the bolt to remove and tighten without over stressing or stripping the thread.... Was the gasket on the inside or the outside? Would RTV against the gasket on the pan make any difference? Example. Pan, RTV, Washer, RTV, inside bolt. Pan, RTV, washer, outside bolt? I personally prefer the underside mounting location but then again I would be putting on a SUV with higher ground clearance and less of a factor for being caught on something. Excellent video, to the point, not a lot of fluff and detailed but fairly simple. You would think that there would be a pretty good market for after market transmission pans with the drain plug kits installed.

Great video Manny. Cars should all come with a trans drain from the factory, but manufacturers are cheap. I've taken too many ATF baths over the years from dropping full pans! Great idea to install this.

@CheetoTheCat
@CheetoTheCat 7 жыл бұрын
Fireship1 it has nothing to do with being cheap. It's to force you to remove the pan so you're more likely to replace the filter too. If every transmission pan had a drain plug, a lot of cheap bastards or unscrupulous shops would simply drain the fluid and refill it.

Use a large drain pan and it is not needed. I have a mortar tray from Home Depot, large, big rectangular pan, and it is big enough nothing drips where it should not. If you read some reviews, for some people these add on plugs leak.

It's ok that its just 2/3's of the pan drain. You just need to take the weight out of the pan ..... Right!! The pan still gets uninstalied... Right!!!! Nice video and I got to see the plug and if I like it.

From my research, it is advisable to use copper crush washers on both inside & outside of pan. Most of the plastic washer products come with two washers for the same purpose. Tighten the crap out of one nut on the inside of the pan too!

Why would you put the plug so high?The point is to drain all of the fluid. Mounting a plug so high will only allow 2/3 or less of the fluid to drain, kinda defeating the purpose of the plug.

@klowny1969
@klowny1969 6 жыл бұрын
There are two reasons..one is the car sits very low to the ground, so you don't want a bump to take off your drain plug..secondly the plug is only to drain the majority of the fluid out so you dont have a mess when dropping the pan. you still need to take the pan off to take the transmission filter off.
@michaelschnetzer2284
@michaelschnetzer2284 6 жыл бұрын
You also have to take into account, the curve of the pan. Too low and the curve will negatively affect the aftermarket fitting being able to seal.

Still have to remove the pan to replace the filter. So taking most of the weight out of the pan prevents spills and protects the pan from getting bent. Trust me, the car is out of service til you get a new pan.

When you put this on the SIDE, About how much fluid is left when you actually have to drain it? You would think that there would be quite a bit of contaminated fluid and silt on the bottom of the pan
@klowny1969
@klowny1969 4 жыл бұрын
Almost all of it comes out..you should always replace the filter when changing the fluid. So the purpose of the drain plug is to get most of the fluid out to prevent a mess. Putting it on the bottom risks it being torn off when hitting a bump, this is a low car. I hope I answered some of your questions. Please don't forget to subscribe

The only way to drain the tranny on some cars is to completely remove the pan covering the valve body. This is performed with the fluid still in the trans and it gets really messy and requires a huge funnel or something similar to try to manage the spillage. With this plug installed you can drain most of the fluid prior to dropping the pan thus alleviating the major part of the mess.

IMHO I would install a FUMOTO valve instead of a drain plug. With the FUMOTO valve no chance of stripping the drain plug, you just turn and open the valve, no crush washers to deal with either. You don't need a large drip pan either to catch the oil you drain directly into a disposable container.
