I *just* finished rebuilding my 46RE transmission; thanks to the help of these videos. In this particular section, though- 2 things that I had to redo multiple times that weren’t really pointed out are; the Raybestos kit has clutch plates that are the same diameter but DIFFERENT thicknesses. This IS a problem if you install the incorrect ones- Which I did (of course. ) AND the reverse band MUST go in a specific way; with the smoothest/ flattest part at the top. I put it in upside down and had to redo that entire section later. Other than that though, I’m firing it up for the first time tomorrow- wish me luck!

This issue is briefly addressed at just after 34:00min. But, it is very easy to miss. I do however, find it interesting that at no point (to my knowledge) are any tolerance measurements taken? Stacked tolerances can widely vary especially if the trans has been previously rebuilt. Which is certainly possible since most of these models are well over 20 years old.. I say that because I have put together a lot of stuff in my life that 'works'. But is very wrong.. Whatever. I guess just beat on it until it blows up again.. I have no issue with that. Overall, these vids are a great resource.

Love how detailed and informative these videos are. They will be really helpful when I start rebuilding my transmission. That said the sound of someone chewing is annoying. I am mildly autistic, and the sound is gross to me. Sounds like chewing gum.

Curious what to do when after assembly of the pump to the case if you don’t have enough end play. I ended up swapping the .08 thrust washer for a slimmer washer. It got me to the right range, but not sure if that was the right way to go about it.

For some reason i cant get the snapring in because with the frictions in there 4 is abit thick but 3 is not thick enough. If that makes sense . the snapring groove ends up not being exposed enough so snapring is too think to go in. Its the 46re from my 2001 dodge durango 5.9 R/T

Boom Hower Hey man, same problem right now. What did you do to overcome this or what am i doing wrong?
@aaronhighway1625 жыл бұрын
okay i found out why it wasn’t going in, the steels were JUST BARLEY thicker than the other steels in the box but they look and match up identical. I used the wrong steels basically
@Emerald5203 жыл бұрын
I know this is too late but the rebuild kit has different size thickness of clutch plates and steel plates in the same pack set them side by side and make sure you are replacing ones of the same thickness. An easy way to do this is get all your replacements together and stacked and compare with the complete stack of the ones you removed the difference will be more apparent. I did this by mistake it took a few minutes before I realized what I had done wrong.

what tool is that you're using for the pump?

Thanks for putting this series together. It will be extremely helpful in the future. I am curious though why you did not install some of the common upgrade parts for these transmissions. Specifically replacing the plastic piston and stock band strut? Also, is it OK to use non ATF+4 for assembly? Thanks again.

Torque rating of the bands: 72 in*lbs, then back it out the required amount of turns. He omits this completely, DO NOT just "snug" it like he does.
@codyeklund7067Ай бұрын
Why is he wrong? please explain.
@AvataranianАй бұрын
@@codyeklund7067 I have given the actual specification (what the manual says) in regards to the bands. "Snug" is not a torque rating. Go to 72in*lbs and then back it out 2 or 3 turns (I forgot exactly how many, the manual will say, also the rebuild kit should come with that info).

I had a leak from the converter housing and replaced the front seal but the factory service manual said to replace the pump gasket and o ring as well. I was doing this job horizontally, not vertically with the overdrive section removed as you are in the video. I tightened the kick down band as much as i could before pulling out the pump. After pulling the pump the shaft had very much play and I think the clutch drums became unsplined because when i went to reinstall the pump ,as I was tightening the bolts, there was a clicking or popping sound. Also, when I grabbed the shaft with vise grips as you do and tried to move it, it wouldn't move. Is there any way I can re spline everything correctly with the transmission lying on the oil pan and transmission mount without any of the other parts removed? Thanks.
