Speaking as someone who has been heavily involved in opera, these terms are for laymen that are learning to sing. These terms aren't and weren't intended to describe how to change how your voice sounds. Essentially they mean where in your body you feel when you sing. It's an easy way to teach beginners how to control their pitch. Changing how your voice sounds is NOT a pitch thing entirely and there are a lot of different factors that go into it (like the focus of the video, how our physiology is)

Thank you very much for this! It makes a lot of sense and helps a lot in understanding what's actually going on when we produce and shape our voices. I'm working a lot on my voice right now and all this comes so naturally to me - then I realized that I've done all this work before, just not with my voice but with my approach to playing brass instruments as a kid and later when teaching the same skills to brass studens. When learning to play a brass instruments you have many tools, and the easiest way to get a powerful sound is to be very active in your creation of the sound through increasing the vibrations of your lips by applying more force, this creates a rougher sound though and learning to get the same effect while keeping your lips relaxed allows you to play "softer" without losing power, you need to create the relaxed vibrations through better managing and shaping your air flow instead (before it ener reaches the lips in the first place). I've never thought about it before, but I can actually hear the latter as a more feminine sound quality - and you are basically trying to achieve a thinner voice through the instrument. Here is an example of what I mean, if you're interested! "Thick": open.spotify.com/track/49QgRGZp9wEVzov0KDQcp1?si=DJ6HUtTWSIqIYbF80vyLhA "Thin": open.spotify.com/track/6Wrw6sXSdpd7lp6BPXEVYj?si=VnhEkBl9TvOfYNNyCJw5nw

Kudos to you for posting all transition stages on youtube. From the very beginning. im not trans, actually im straight 260lb male. I have naturally squeaky, high pitched voice. Deeply insecure about how i sound in public / on the phone. Your work on voice, and controlling voice helped me be more confident and speak out more when I need to. Also, hearing this particular intro music, followed by your voice.. it brings the shivers to my back.. every time. Thank you for your service young lady :heart:

I had NO IDEA about so much of this, you cover so much that other videos don't. I've been struggling the past year, hard. I'm getting to where I can sometimes pass as long as I don't open my mouth. Turns out I was struggling so hard in part because of my setup, I'm bending my neck way downwards to see the screen, and slouch/hunch when practicing. I thought I was looking straight but my posture's kinda garbage. actually straightening up and doing number 4 made me start to feel a difference in the two voices. Not gonna do the head tilt thing much because I don't want to rely on it, but it helped me actually feel which muscles are activating and control them. I actually had to stop for the night and cry, thank you SO MUCH.

I have watched her videos for years, everybody seems enthousiastic about them, and nevertheless, it is frustrating, this is chinese to me (thinness, resonance etc). I hear the differences but could not say how she produces them. (At what age did she begin? What was her original voice? Maybe it can play a role in the capacity to modify the voice).

Dear Z, Is it normal/okay if my throat feels tired after practice? It's not an "I yelled too much" kind of sore, it's more like a muscle after a good work out. Thank you and much love
@TransVoiceLessons4 жыл бұрын
Hi, please avoid doing any behavior that feels "friction-y", "scratchy", "rough", "scraping", "burning", or leaves a feeling of irritation. Some voice fatigue can be normal after a thorough voice session but please listen to your body and rest. This platform doesn't give me a good way to reliably tell if you your behavior is harmful or not, but listening to your body should be. Higher pitched + higher constricted sounds are what cause the most vocal trauma or cause problems vocally. Hope this helps! Don't forget to rest and hydrate always!

Really good video! I ended up spending a solid 30 mins humming in and out after the concept was introduced in the video, trying to relate what I knew to what you were saying. Then I used the rest of the video to help tune myself to the idea. That, plus a spectrogram in the background, allowed me to make some limited speech in a much higher pitch! The bit on the m sound is spot on. The only reason I think I was able to pick this up in the first watch-through was that I've been practicing my full vocal range with humming, trying to push up and down, and it turns out that it really helped me get down the basics of manipulation thickness, just needed to get some more control over it! 100% recommend humming for any who have limited time to practice or want to practice in public. Just make it musical, and nobody's gonna give you a second glance! Advise that helped me: When I was having trouble figuring out whether I was messing with pitch or thickness, I tried going into as deep a voice as I could, and then tried to thin it. Even if the pitch goes up, you'll be able to tell that it is thinner than that pitch normally is. Practice going in and out, two fingers on your throat to feel what's happening (or not happening, as once you've got it right, the Adam's apple should not move, or only move a very small amount), then try moving up in pitch as you get a feel for it. Side note: the little bit at the end where you mention that you were re-adjusting the pitch after thinning out the folds cleared up so much confusion. When I got the spectrogram open, every time I switched my pitch rose, and then I put on your audio, and it didn't, and I was so confuzzled. Funnily enough, I managed to figure it out by getting myself to drop in pitch when switching, then being able to choose rise or fall, and then getting the control to keep on pitch. Fun challenge for those reading: One of the things I played with to really get a handle on this was, once my a was sounding about right, I switched to the other vowels. Try moving from thick to thin with each vowel, then try that at different pitches. It really gives a good feel of what you're doing, as well as helping to isolate pitch changes.

This reminds me of another voice training video talking about making it a lil breathy but love how u have it to science breaking it all down and how each tiny detail works.
@TransVoiceLessons4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! We definitely don't want to be breathy -- just thin. Thin and breathy are very different. Breathiness is achieved by not properly closing the vocal folds so the airflow leaks out. Thinness and thickness is achieved by stiffening or loosening the folds -- essentially allowing for more or less mass to vibrate which sounds more masculine or more feminine. :)
