Do you know any resources or techniques for practicing vocal fold thickness? Also, thank you so much for making this video!
@TransVoiceLessons
@TransVoiceLessons 4 жыл бұрын
Currently I have a comprehensive audio document available on my Patreon which covers 10 techniques for thinness and thickness. It also contains ear training for the sounds. I also publicly taught several methods in a recent patron workshop which is fairly accessible. Otherwise, I will be making a video on the topic soon enough. Here is just a very very brief overview of approaches and methods you can use to find vocal fold thinness. These are all mix-ups and variations I use when teaching it and there are a few other approaches as well like a proprioceptive or mechanical transmission of the idea. 7 simple exercises to explore thinness: 1. Start thick neutral singing then adding hot air and slightly go up in pitch, it should trigger a highly audible and feel-able cue. It's also visible on a spectrogram as a tall line. 2. Ultra strong exhalation with a shred of tone is a self confirmation exercise to first feel the thin configuration and refine it as to allow for ultra smooth onsets and releases. I've used approaches like this with varying success. Usually if a student can't gentle onset in thinness like 6-10 mimics, it's best to try something else. 3. Big success with starting at a low thick pitch and having the student mildly glissando up while thinning the sound a bit. The folds should automatically thin and the student can try to bring it back down but keep the thinness. It seems to help people who can’t find the coordination well in other ways. I believe Estill documented that 1/2 or 1/3rd up a "trained singers" vocal range, the coordination would flip from thick to thin. This happens in untrained voices too and makes for a very easy approach. This is also interesting because it creates a new connection for pitch training in feminization. It's really great to anchor the higher pitches with thinness to build the foundation behaviorally quicker. 4. Basic Mimicry of straight tone sounds or speech sounds. 5. I've observed holding a thick sound and tucking the chin into the sternum to mechanically force a thin configuration. Leaning the head back to hear the thicker configuration. Student can try to maintain the quality of sound while returning the neutral neck neck position. 6. Estill type sob exercises/yawn/aww cute etc (these seem to be less successful in untrained or inexperienced voices who aren’t comfortable really committing to sob quality). 7. New one I found today: teach the student to create gentle ingressive pitched phonation, then just have them go from inhaling to exhaling. It's super uncomfortable to create ingressive sounds (for me at least) with thick folds, so this almost like forces the hand shout outs to Nick at OnlineVoiceCoach.com, hes a great friend and cued me into the pseudo-independent nature of fold mass from Estills initial work.

I’ve only barely started my journey of voice feminization, but in reference to what she is saying at ~17:30, I recorded myself doing a few different female voices, and talked for about a minute per voice, and that helped me hone in on what I wanted my voice to sound like. It won’t be for everyone, as you will be recording yourself talk and then listening back to it, but if you can stomach listening to your own voice, I’ve found it really helpful as an initial voice target.

Brilliantly presented as always and truly theoretically educational. As a 50 something trans woman (I transitioned back on the early 90s) I have found that my voice has really slipped over the last 10 years. I would love to see a video of you taking a trans woman through the practical steps of feminisation, to understand how in practice this is possible. Also most of the videos on KZbin have young trans women who maybe have begun their transition at an earlier age with puberty blockers perhaps, so it would be great to see an older transitioner taken step by step through the process. Sorry to sound so frustrated. I'm really pulling my hair out with the ineffectiveness of my voice at the moment, which is something I'd rather not do because then I'd have a man's voice and be bald too xx

Imagine how these dimensions of vocalization could be used in a conlang. I don't think anything more can be wrung out of R2 because that is already one of the main factors for vowels, and pitch is already used by tonal languages. It wouldn't make sense for the natural language of a people for whom the dimensions of R1 pitch and vocal thickness already communicate gender, but in speculative fiction anything is possible. For example the Gethenians of Winter from "The Left Hand of Darkness" who are NB and can take either sexual characteristics temporarily, or the men of Athos from "Ethan of Athos", or perhaps the Amazons of Themyscira from the DCEU or Greek mythology. Without sexual distinctions within the population, R1 manipulation and vocal thickness could be used to massively expand a languages phonemic inventory.
@TransVoiceLessons

Hi there! This is a lovely post! This model is actually a reduction for students. There is a tremendous amount of other variables and micro-variables we can factor into the speakers identity and phoneme inventory beyond these. I actually love exploring and building conlangs! I disagree with your statement about R2 though and I'd love to share why! :) There are actually so many incredible micro-variables that factor R2 behavior and it's expression during identical vowels between speakers. First, the tongue has way more dimensions than traditional phonetics models consider. Just as one example, the tongue can be micro-constricted in numerous places simultaneously and psuedo-independently of each other. Many speakers hold subtle micro-constrictions across different parts of the tongue which contributes to each speakers unique identity. This means that we could be speaking the exact same perceivable vowel for a language but form it with dozens of different subtle colors. Even the dynamic behavior between these micro-constrictions as they evolve during speech is a quality of R2. Further, the velar pinch is criminally under discussed in phonetics and impacts R2's expression. The sound can be altered by changing the velar pinch's location, shape, strength, length, or persistence. Further, alteration of consonant formation has a ton of dimensions and it ultimately impacts the R2 due to the co-articulatory nature of speech. There is also the specific contour of each approximant behavior and/or diphthong that corresponds to driving a lot of R2 motion. Lastly, R2 is a factor of vowels but vowels are fuzzy abstractions. You can produce the same vowel with several different R2 qualities with the techniques mentioned before or even basic techniques. When I talk about R1 and R2 I am actually referring to them as a meta variable which is the expression of a lot of other dimensions that build them. I.e. R1 is an expression of larynx height behaviors, pharyngeal constrictor behaviors, nasopharynx/pharyngeus muscle behavior, tongue dorsum shape, tongue root behavior, aryepoglottic stuff, etc. Each of these have their own levels upon levels. Thanks so much for the stimulating and engaging post! Love it, how fun!

@Marlene-ou5ol
@Marlene-ou5ol Жыл бұрын
Precisely, a talk at the university. Did you work on the rate of your folds? How did you do it? Did you ever try? It is like explaining what happens when you travel at the speed of light; it may be very clear, but it does not mean it will happen anyday. The comparaison is not perfect, of course. But you get the point: knowing that that your voice is influenced by the rate of the folds will not bring you in itself very far, however scientific it is.

When I first began my trans journey a year ago, I started with your videos. At first, I was overwhelmed. My motivation was low. I watched other KZbin videos. Many said all I must do is raise the larynx, but that only made my voice ambiguous at best. I thought I'd never sound like a girl, so I gave up for a while. But revisiting your tutorials helped me discover that the larynx is not the only thing controlling our voice. I understand how many want a quick solution. But your extensive tutorials are more helpful than anyone else I know. Your knowledge is deep, legit, free and very helpful. And you simplify them as much as possible. Thank you so much for giving us all this information! You're the best expert I know for voice feminization! ♀💖✨

Very helpful! I think this could have really helped me avoid a negative outcome with the last speech pathologist I worked with on vocal feminization. For me, as a trans woman, the challenge of achieving a female voice can sometimes feel as though that challenge invalidates my very identity. And my last speech pathologist didn’t understand the challenge of this, and she simply added to the sense that I could not achieve a female voice or put the blame on me as not wanting the voice. In some ways, yes: I need to want to change it enough to practice to get to that 50% probability that I will accidentally use my female voice. But this speech pathologist had no empathy for what this process could feel like for someone like me. So rather than helping me objectify my voice as a physiological tool I could control, she enlarged some thinking in my head that attached voice to more psychological aspects of my assigned gender- she made my struggle an anchor that stopped my progress. If I had the concepts of this video in my arsenal of thoughts, I wouldn’t have let her do that to me.

Thank you so much for your post. I'm grateful to be able to help. Do you mind if I share this post (anonymously) with a round table of speech pathologists and voice teachers tomorrow? I'm working to improve the standard of care trans individuals get through speech pathologists. It's honestly so weird. They aren't even trained in this kind of thing and don't actively live it or do it themselves (in 99% of cases). How anybody thought specialists in pathological disorders of voice were fit to teach voice alteration is beyond me. They are largely clueless and circles of SLP's having discourse on transvoice is basically just filled with discussion of identity and inclusivity and completely devoid of technique or voice discussion. Your post is an amazing anecdote I'd appreciate having consent to share forward.

@@TransVoiceLessons also, if you are curious, you can find a Tedtalk I gave before I really worked on voice at all- in fact there is someone in the comment section of that KZbin video who blames me for causing a lack of acceptance for trans women, because I hadn’t worked on my voice enough before giving the talk. My response to this critic was that we should be accepting of all people at different stages of transition, and that we shouldn’t invalidate someone because of their voice. But in reality, for my day to day experience, I’d rather my voice didn’t immediately “out me” and support misgendering of me. Socially, I want my voice to cause less friction, and for all my interactions with others, more often than not, to result in more confidence in and more validation of who I know myself to be. I am a woman. I’m not non-binary, so I definitely want to get over the plateau I’ve had with my voice. Thanks for the work you are sharing on KZbin! I am benefiting from it!

As I wrote I recommend going to one since they the help you thoroughly from your situation specifically. Not sure how it is with insurances and stuff in USA tho, sorry (or other countries)

Thank you for a new video first off. So I’m just a few doses away from finishing my first month of HRT and voice has always been one of my largest hang ups. I absolutely despise my current voice. And I’ve tried to work on it but I get so lost. I feel as though I can imitate other voices well be they male or female in both spoken and song form. But for the life of me I cannot figure out how to control it in my day to day. The biggest things like muscle control etc are so foreign to me and I can’t seem to ever find anything on how to precisely control any of it. It feels like everything just says “raise this” or something like that. And I can’t figure out the exact technical method of doing that and it hurts my heart when that happens and I just slip back down the slope of progress and forget all about it for a time. I feel like it shouldn’t be this hard, I pick things up so easily but for some reason I can’t grasp this and it just kills me. Anyway, sorry for the rant, I’ll keep trying my best and maybe soon something can finally click. I mean I’m already starting hormones in the dark of a pandemic, why not come out of it with vocal control aswell right? If only if only

Wonderful video as always, and I wouldn't have guessed when I first clicked it, but a lot I needed to hear right now. The section on positive/negative mentality especially felt so relative for me right now. Been practicing since November, and the past couple months I've been really trying to ramp up my practice and efforts. For a while I was making noticeable progress towards getting my voice where I wanted it, but lately it's been unchanging and nothing I try to do seems to help me any. The funny thing is even though it sounds exactly the same every practice now, some days it sounds almost tolerable to me, and other days I just don't like it at all. I suppose I will just need to keep a clear head on it so I don't slink into some type of negativity loop or anything (if I'm not already in one lol). One tiny step at a time. Just so I don't end it on a downer: Again, thank you for your videos and everything that you do :)

I am glad I started with this video. Beginning with an overview of the entire process will be helpful in gaining direction, the voice training process has felt like the most overwelming part of this whole thing, even though it dosent have to be. It seems like the process centers on being awear of the muscles and things that affect your voice, to gain control over the development of your voice, shaping it through pratice and techinic until it reaches a comfortable space. Which can be anything! This training allows one to choose their voice! And I think that's pretty cool. I am not trying to sound hoo hoo smart girl. I'm just putting things in my own words to help me process information.

Heyo going through this playlist now, I think my internet is spying on me because I was looking stuff up about voice therapy recently and then this popped into my recommended, but I am glad I found this as a little while ago I found out I was female(pre-dominantly anyway NB-DemiGirl and proud!), you seem to really know your stuff and your voice is super impressive! I hope that this can help me get the desired effect without the assistance of hormone therapy(Alas I am still a kid and only one of my parents is particularly supportive and they are aprehensive about it, which I totally get its a scary unknown world for all of us especially me), though I imagine hormone therapy would help in pharynx region, anyway, I just wanted to say thank you so much for making these videos and I hope that they can help me and many others!

Thanks. Voice and acoustics isn’t complex. It’s one of the most self evident and directly observable fields. If someone can’t explain it simply they probably don’t understand it. In terms of planning, it’s different for every video. I have about 6 planned videos on my list right now. The editing takes the longest part but if I can catch a flow I can usually knock it out in a few days. I just like 8 hours a day so it’s hard to have energy to edit transvoice videos after teaching 8 hrs of transvoice 😁

Thanks for this. I learned a lot again. I guess I haven't been paying attention since I haven't heard you talk about vocal thickness/thinness before. Your explanation and demonstration provide a key missing piece of the puzzle for me. It explains what people have often told me about my voice being "light" or "young" sounding. Although my pitch is not higher than normal, my vocal folds are naturally thinner than the average guy. Now, with your knowledge, I can begin to consciously work on controlling that. Very cool💗💗💗

Amy Ashlyn previously I described this method in indirect ways of arriving at through other glottal behavior (interactions of airflow and closure) but now it has been isolated as a specific and independently manipulate variable. All the R1 examples I do as well have thinness baked in. But now that it’s isolated more clearly everything is much better!!!! Check on patreon today! I just released a huge document with lots of exercises on this topic. It has been quite a finishing piece for my model.

I love you. I am yet to understand this "simplified" complicated topic of voice alteration, but finally I feel like the overview makes somewhat sense to me. Practically however, I do find it difficult to control and split up the different sensations of voice alteration. When doing the voice exercises in some of your other videos (pitch/resonance for example) it sometimes feels like I'm compensating with other areas of alteration. My biggest difficulty though is probably to dare and use my voice in daily life. I am out of the closet, it's just. Scary... when socializing with people. Much love

Thanks so much for stepping back and taking a high level view of this. This was an important step for me to understand the overall process before diving in with the the details. I’m going to give it a go with more knowledge and a positive mental attitude. As you said at the end I’m sure there’ll be many failures and set backs but as long as there is progress getting to 51% on normalizing any behavior can only be a matter of time. Ty . Monique xx 💋

Wow, you’re really good! I think the vocal therapist worked with years ago would have benefited from some of this too. I was only with her for 4 months but what I learned dramatically changed me. Practice is literally everything. Although it is important to understand the how and the process itself too. There is so much I can relate to this process from “the vagina monologues” bit there they talked about how men are monotone and flat, but women are softer, more breathy, flowing in pitch! Resonance is really key! But still before you get there, or rather after one understands the how and the physiology, the practice and that process takes over. Warming up with various exercises, lip trills for one! Using an E sound and matching pitch with a keyboard or piano gradually going in notes. Repeating the sentences that cause one to go up and down in resonance and pitch all while focusing more on ones posture, how open their mouth is, where their tongue is, how much breath is being used, feeling where the vibration is coming from either the nose or on your teeth. It is so much to consider! Takes so much dedication and practice! It takes months if not years to undo the damage of testosterone poisoning. I’ve not practiced in years but I also have a rather feminine voice now, still I even I could benefit from continued practice and would be open to an insight evaluation from you as to where I am now. I personally feel I was better when I was practicing but like you were indicating in your video where you over that 51% and things become normal, I’ve hit that and only fell back a bit I think, but still no one really ever misgenders me. It might happen once or twice a year, if that.... I honestly couldn’t say since i can’t recall the last time it happened haha.... still I wonder if it could be improved at all.... singing is where I’m most self conscious but one has to master speaking before one can sing. At least in my opinion... so if you ever had a free moment to give an opinion, that would be awesome!

Me again. I watched this video yesterday, and I really glad I had. Today I don’t know how, I just found that I can produce a rather feminine voice, finally, but the thick version. I had tried a thick masculine to thin masculine voice, the thin version did have a light onset compared to thick one, but it is still not light enough, the “sudden” onset is audible when listening very carefully. And it is obvious when raising the R1. Then I remember your this video, your thin masculine voice is really really thin. Also, my thick feminine or less masculine voice is somehow familiar to myself, it likes the voice I pretended to be childish, but the colour or style is changed to a more mature one by changing R2. Finally I know what I need to focus on, I have spread many hours from R1 to thinness and back. There is room for improvement of my R1, but vocal fold mass is more important then. Thank you for your different videos, the different contents, approach and examples in different videos on similar aspects have help me to re-evaluate from different directions when watching different videos. 🙏👏🏻
