I'm a UK guy old enough to remember these when they were new, never been a fan of the Spitfire, they were a rebodied Triumph Herald, the swing axle rear was not the best idea..... the Jensen Healey however is a very different thing , friend had one,around 1980, a great drive and massive fun around our local lanes, That one needs to be saved

I had British sports cars in the 1960s and 1970s. I had a 59 Austin Healey Sprite - and a 1963 Austin Healey 3000. I owned a 1965 Triumph TR4 and a 1960 Morris Minor two door coupe with a souped up 1300cc Austin Healey Sprite engine. I had a 1967 MGB fastback and a 1984 Jaguar XJS V12. I was a little slip of a girl and fit into them nicely. I weighed no more than 118 lbs and I'm 5'6" tall. They were lots of fun and got lots of notice... And lots of speeding tickets. I owned motorcycles then as well - and I still have them to this day! One is a 1953 BSA A10 650 cc Golden Flash Sport Model and the other is a 1969 Honda CRR 450 racing bike. ( they are not for sale ) The British cars were notorious for not starting or quiting in traffic... they were finickey and tempermental. Lucas Electrical systems are the spawn of Lucifer! Something was always shorting out or burning. Back then, I kept the local sports car dealers part department and aftermarket parts suppliers in business. Today I drive a Lincoln MKX. It is comfortable, quiet, smooth running and handles great. As neat as those old sports car were - I do not want one today!
@LarryHeagren
@LarryHeagren 4 ай бұрын
Lucas was indeed the Prince of Darkness for electrical wiring. I know a guy who reworks British cars by re-crimping ALL the pins in the connectors, sometimes replacing the connectors completely. Then he starts to work on getting the cars running and driving. I've owned 2 Jags and they are expensive to maintain and eat lots of parts. Both were pre-Tata cars. Now I drive a Ford Fiesta ST which has a British engine a French 6 speed and was assembled in Mexico. It has 180,000 miles on the clock. Regular oil changes to keep the turbo happy are a must!

@@TheQuestionableGarage Can you soak the cylinders and see if they free up? Just for the heck of it? I mean if any one frees up maybe it will run? Lots of question marks, but a lot of people would watch those old engines spitting some fire!
@russelljacob7955
@russelljacob7955 4 ай бұрын
@@vaibhavdlv A free cylinder does not mean a running cylinder. I actually cringe when I watch people even trying to turn a sitting engine like that over. A fantastic way to destroy a servicable or rebuildable engine. Even if it starts and runs, just takes any small contaminant to turn the block into a boat anchor. Should never try to turn an engine over without at minimum pulling the heads. Especially if it is an unsealed engine like that.

Back in the early ‘70s I helped crew a Spitfire. We campaign all over Florida. We were regional champs the two years I did it. We only won one race but we went to every race always finished well and collected the points. Lots of fun. Also crewed a MGBT at Daytona 24 Hours broke a valve 11 hours in. Went to Sebring but were not fast enough to qualify. Sure had a lot of fun. Definitely a fun little car.

Still boggles my mind people will have dozens of cars rusting away refusing to sell or give away any of them. If you haven't sat in the car in a decade, go find a buyer, take any price for it. Let someone enjoy it instead of letting the earth reclaim it.

God, I want that Triumph so bad. I've always loved spitfires, but never been able to afford one, and the older I get, the more expensive they get. Have the chassis sandblasted and powder coated, restore the body British racing green, and swap in an NA K24 with a BMW trans and the flying Miata bell housing. But I don't even know how I'd get it up to Maine.

Jared I have a feeling if the right group of people see this (sees?) darn, anyway.. I think you have a small gold mine here on your hands. NONE of this stuff is easy to find anymore I don't think, and you have SO MANY parts here. A master painter / artist Mr. Beiling here in town, he's a great artist, when we were kids he had these tiny British Racing cars.. they were SO cool and he was such a wild guy, he loved his fast tiny cars. See it doesn't matter how 'fast' like today's cars are, those things were SO tiny, so close to the ground, so NOT air-tight, it felt like you were going a thousand miles an hour in it.. all the time!! Someone will get in touch with you and tell you how to sell all this stuff, probably at a meet one day!

Ha, my father got stuck in an MG Midget once too, although in his case he was at a dealership trying to take it for a test drive. The salesman, presumably exercising Harry Selfridge's law of consumer relations ("in matters of taste, the customer is always right"), didn't try to stop him. I think they had to use soap from the men's room to get him out.

To a small British car nut you have a gold mine. The Spitfire is restorable, it worth $2-3K to the right person. All the panels and doors also have value. Save as much as you can. There is a market for all of it. I’m restoring a 76 MG Midget. I have it down to the shell and FB Market Place, EBay and all the FB groups are were I go for information and parts. Good luck with sourcing.a place to sell or even give the parts and cars.

As a brit, I have mixed feelings about the spitfire. I want to love it. I really do. It is a piece of British Motor Sports history. But the mass produced spitfire.... It's just not a good car that survived the test of time. Their suspension wallows like a boat, they rust through in a moist breeze and they are slow. If I could find a good chassis here in the UK I would love to replace the suspension, stiffen the chassis a little and then stick a AJ V8 engine in it. in case you don't know the AJ. It's the UK's LS. It is pretty much the most available V8 in the country. It is the engine used in the Jag and given how unreliable Jag's are, there are quite a few available.

Ya know that most people (non mechanic) don't even get what your talking about with the LEXUS DI vs included Port inj Thang. But you still do it anyway - perhaps they will understand one day. As a child of the 70s i must have passed the factory that made your spitfires many times here in Coventry, as I had several uncles and aunties that lived in canley where these were built. Unfortunately the whole car industry in Coventry is no more, after being Britain's motor city for most of the 20th century, all that can be found now are a few road names, sculptures and an old working men's club named after triumph.

Grassroots Motorsports did a no-limits conversion on a Spitfire to install a 13B rotary. Just because it currently has no functional driveline does not mean it's not a great project for someone else.

If I didn't have 3 car projects lined up, I'd take these. I always wanted a Spitfire.

I've worked on one of those triumph spitfires the electric it had 3 fuses on the one I worked on the power went through fuse 1 and through 33% of the car back to fuse 2 through the next 33% and to the third then to the rest of the car the door limiters keep the doors from hitting the tub corners and leaving little dents. It's nice to see them still floating around Those cars look very good projects for someone with the passion for them but they need a lot of love hope someone will help take them off your hands very cool of you to save them and give them a chance.

You probably need to find an appraise or get ahold of a triumph car club or hagerty so you can find out what you need to ask for the parts you have. Im betting you that those parts are worth a-lot more than you would think.
